I think it is a "Pitot tube" and it is widely used to measure speed with accuracy, F1 cars have one in the front nose, but it is common to see them mounted on top of the cars during testing.

pitot tubes are often found near the cockpit on a plane, and gives an accurate speedometer reading, based on the pressure of the air. They work at its best where the air is not interupted, so sticking them high above the car gives a more accurate speed.

pito cev, or pitot tube is device that is used on vehicles that have no contact to the ground (airplanes) to measure speed. Why using pitit tube on car, while you can have perfecty accurate classic speedometer?

Well, obviously there should be aerodinamic reasons (spped of the air or similar) more than "pure speed".

[en.wikipedia.org] - though not sure how much applies to the car. I guess simply measuring the pressure at the airbox is important enough !!!

maybe FIA asked them to do some turbulance measurements too see how the cars will behave under new rules or something, as turbulence is now less dense and twice as high (as someone already spotted)

It's pretty much impossible to 'measure' turbulence.

turbulence is now less dense and twice as high

It is impossible to come to that direct conclusion... The pictures look like they were taken at different times of day, therefore different lighting but also with different amounts of water on track. Agreed, the 09 cars do look alot 'kinder' to the air.

The STR does seem to be driving on a wetter track. It could also be that the STR is driving with other tyres, which could result in other spray?

Mclaren's engine poofed some minutes ago. So far: Toyota, Renault, and now Mclaren with this kind of problem in these days.

There testing engines to see if they can last 3 races.

but they only have 4 engines in total to be used in all tests before the season starts so there isn't much afford to be lose a engine...but you are right about that they are testing if the engine can last 3 races even if they don't have to at the beginning of the year.

Teams do tend to test stuff until it breaks. I am not saying thats what they done but who knows.

Most things can be repaired anyway unless of course the case is broken.

Yeah, generaly teams will push the cars to the limit in testing...I mean why not? That's why you get a lot of failures and big names having shunts.

It's better to have problem's in testing and to sort them out instead if going to Melbourne and lasting a few lap's ;)

I did not say I'm not interested in aerodynamics, and from an INTEREST point of view the 08 cars surely had more than the 09 cars. If I'm asked about which ones LOOK better, however, why am I to include aerodynamics into my decision rather than just personal taste?

It is OK :)
I was just supporting Renault#1Fan statement as I think the same.
My personal taste indicates me the 2008 cars looked better :)
Greetings.

On the other hand, do you know why McLaren is not using their new car in Portugal?

to me, it looks as though the drivers sit higher in the mp4-24 to see out of the higher nose:

does that now not make those higher cockpit sides not effective enough again? as to me it looks like much mroe of the drivers head now isn't protected :/

I dunno, I think McLaren's cockpit sides are lower than the other cars this year :S
