You can't see the nose regardless when you're sat in a modern F1 car, so that would be a bit pointless.

The area around the drivers helmet is governed very strictly. Either the cockpit sides are legal or they're not. It's pretty much that simple. I can't see even McLaren designing a car where the driver is too exposed. ;)

Anyway, you want the driver (as with all weight) to be as low as possible.

Guess he means the front parts of the monocoque.

i do indeed. well either way, their heads are way more exposed in this car than in last years.

if the FIA have judged the amount of helmet that isn't protected on the mp4-24 as OK, then why did they ever change them from 2007 lol?!

Perhaps that front part of the car is lower, as the air intake is also reduced in size but seems like the height proportion to the driver's head has stayed the same so that would explain the cockpit wall sides?

"the air intake is also reduced in size"

I just cannot understand, why would they reduce the air intake? I thought that due to the 2009 regs being more harder on engines they would need more cooling or am I just being dumb? :X

As to the question of McLaren not using their new car in Portugal: I read somewhere that they use kind of an interim car, e.g. with the old rear wing, to give the car more grip and avoid crashing out in this crucial period of testing, which is a danger because of the weather. Don't know if that is true, though, but that's what I read on motorsport-total.com (german).

That was due to weather I think. with the improving weather and track conditions today, they began to use a 09-spec rear wing.

I read that every driver was having some issues of losing the rear coming out of the last corner in Portimão, even in the dry.

I have no doubt that the rearmost part of that engine cover is semitransparent.

Look at the picture posted before. All those so-called reflections are perfectly aligned with the other side (Check the blue lines).

In the pic below, all those parts visible on (or through) the rear potion of the engine cover is also in perfectly continuous with the background objects, not even a slightest distortion.

Same situation below...

In the pic below, right vertical part of rear wing is also visible through the engine cover. Also note that the reflection of rear wing on the engine cover doesn't continue through the rearmost part.

Same situation. Check the rear wing reflection pattern on the engine cover and check the right vertical fin of the rearwing.

Again, even the sky can be seen through that part. If it's reflection we should see it on the front parts of the engine cover too.

So, as you can see, not only at one angle, but at different angles the situation is same too. It's only at the rearmost part, not at the whole engine cover. I don't know why we can't see the "1" of Mobil1 and Mercedes star at the other side, but we can see all the other things that are behind that part. And while we can see reflection on anterior parts, we don't see any reflection at that part. Under these circumstances, I think it's semitransparent. And that bears a second question. If it's semitransparent, then it's not made of carbonfiber. Then what is it?

The mclaren drivers are no more exposed than the williams drivers when you see the cars at the same angle.

That's really unusual watercolours.
I don't think I'd have ever noticed that ;)

Agree about the new Williams nose, the car looks nice all of a sudden

And while I'm at it, here's some amateur footage from testing at the new Portimao track.

Thank you very much, Finnamus Fin Fin!

I also read the track still had puddles of water despite 6 straight hours of sun. Some small aspects must be improved before this track can be contending for a spot in F1, and I sure hope it does!
