I think everything in this thread is worth taking into account. If you want something you can tinker with, something you can hack a bit and occasionally suffer the consequences, go with Android. If you want something which won't give you any fuss and just works, go for iOS. My days of tinkering with stuff are over, so it's iOS all the way for me. I think of all the current tablets out there that aren't iPads (Galaxy Tab, RIM Playbook, HP Slate), they're all competing with the current generation iPad. Have one. Would buy another. Thoroughly excellent device. Not without flaws but on the whole, a fantastic device. Excellent battery life, wide range of apps, great sized screen. Just to go back to what Gav said: "It's got none of the good bits of a smartphone, while having all the drawbacks of a netbook or ultraportable laptop." I'd have to disagree, as you expect.
