TBH I think thats the same piece of debris. Anyway good luck Felipe with a speedy recovery.

And brilliant pole by Alonso, definately light. But this is shaping up to be a great race tomorrow.

That's a camera not quite keeping up with a small, fast-moving object so that it appears in two frames at once. Note that the spring is heavily interlaced in both its appearances there, and the rest of the image isn't.
Yeah well!, after that thing hit him. Felipe is knock-out unconcious, thus putting all his weight at the front and that explains why he is on FULL GAS/BRAKE at the same time...although some though it was a brake or gas failure(lol!).and not counter-steering.

And thats explain on henry surtees crash!...his engine is still running after the crash, because all he weight is thrown at the front thus keeping his foot on that gas pedal..

Was working outside when I heard this, was getting texts from a mate, first one said "Massa's been hit on the head by a piece of debris" I was sure he was dead, especially after Surtees' crash last week. I'm pretty relieved to see that it's not that serious. A basilar skull fracture, if that's what he has, could very well spell the end of his career. Very lucky or very unlucky for Massa, depending on how you look at the accident.

Both, really. Very unlucky that it happened in the first place, of course, but extremely lucky that it just missed his visor.

Hope Felipe's injuries aren't too severe, and that he makes a full and speedy recovery. He's gone up greatly in my estimation as a driver this season.

His luck at Hungary and Oz is extremely bad. I mean the engine failure and now this. Oz was just the car never performing up to his standards

A basilar skull fracture could cover half of the head and very rarely has long-term implications. Not that he has one. He just has a superficial cut to the left of his forehead (perhaps not, as it appears in most photos, on his eyebrow).

I've also read a rumour that he's been placed in an induced coma, but that seems to spring from the report that he'd been sedated at the circuit. Everything is pointing to a nasty wound and a probable mild concussion, but nothing more.

It's been confirmed that he's not racing tomorrow, though that's hardly surprising. I don't think they can place another driver in the car now either, and it wouldn't be wise to do so... no laps at the circuit, no chance of points... nah, not worth it.
At least they will give a try.

But wouldn't they just put a tester out on track to just get as much data as they can due to the inseason ban on testing?
There's only so much data you can gather from a driver learning the track and conditions.

They can't do it anyway. Had it happened prior to qualifying I believe you can swap drivers (providing the stewards agree to it) but not after.
domenicalli (in an interview) would not have said that michael is the ferrari 3º driver (and reserve)? choose badoer after so long would not be a risk?

Brake display is like an on/off switch, either 0% or 100% so that's not accurate

confirmation of skull damage for Massa

"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."

A brilliant piece on the Mirror website.

Felipe Massa was airlifted to a local hospital following a crash in qualifying that knocked the Brazilian unconscious.

Massa ran over a piece of debris on track towards the close of the middle 15-minute session that had been deposited earlier by Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP.

The debris appeared to lodge beneath the Ferrari, seemingly locking into place not only the steering column, but also the throttle.

On-screen graphics showed the throttle was open as he straight-lined off the track at turn four, ploughing nose first into a tyre barrier.

Skid marks across the considerable run-off area showed the 28-year-old had at least attempted to brake before the collision.

However, the fact he made no attempt to turn away from the impact suggested a further problem with the steering.

The force of the collision knocked Massa unconscious as he showed no signs of movement inside the cockpit of his car for some time before finally being attended to by on-track paramedics.

After being taken to the circuit's medical centre in what the FIA described as "a stable condition", Massa was then flown to a city hospital for further examination 22 minutes after his shunt.

Despite the serious nature of the incident, you can't help but laugh in total disbelief.
