Journey is relevant because he sang Don't stop Believin' twice during the series and it was the rumoured winners song. Glee hasn't hit these shores yet (I've seen it and think it's a funny show)
maybe "now you do what they told you" relates to the people who will buy the X Factor winner's song, because Simon told them to?

The song isn't really relevant. A RATM fan picked his favourite song and ran with it. It's snowballed from there. What Mike says is technically true, there is a lot of irony involved with that lyric. But there is irony overflowing here. RATM is anti-establishment, and as a sign of anti-establishment, the fans are about to make it the most successful song of the year in the UK music industry. Irony? Oh I think so!

People shouldn't read too much into the song choice. It really is about trying to stop Cowells dominance of the charts, and bringing competition back into play, not the message of the song itself.

cheers muks, sorry i was unclear i actually meant a link to the cover of it, I wanted to see if it was possible for a version to exist where i'd enjoy one of her songs. As it stands I made it to 0:09 on your video and couldn't stand it anymore.

Well said, David. On everything.

Don't be too fussed for those who haven't seen Glee - they mouthraped journey by having a pretentious sounding "keep the spotlight on me" kinda girl singing half of it, it's just awful. My gf bought her housemate the soundtrack and it's got heaps of 80s/90s power ballads/songs you love on your winamp list but don't like people seeing, which is all good, save for the fact they're all sung by the cast. Ergh.
oh yeah, i know all about that Dave, how the song was just picked for no other particular reason. i was just commenting on how nicely that lyric could fit with the situation we find ourselves in, the RATM supporters buying the track cos the f/b group said so, and the tv viewers buying the winner's song cos Cowell said so.

i understand that any other song by any other artist could have been chosen to go against x factor, but by a fluke coincidence the song chosen has a lyric that fits nicely.

@ MikaH, search youtube for "Joe x factor the climb" or something, you should find the cover.

WHAT???

OK, now I am in no way a Miley Cyrus fan, but taking that song to cover is genuine foul play. Miley recorded a lot of kiddie pop as "Hannah Montana", but last year she finally emerged as a singer in her own right and "The Climb" was her breakthrough song. It was the track that defined her as Miley Cyrus, not Hannah Montana.

For someone to take that song and cover it, especially someone who is only likely to be famous for a few months, is sticking a middle finger up to the importance of that song to the original artist.

Just imagine if you finally make it big with one of your own songs for the first time, only to have people forever refer to it as, "Oh, that's the song done by that nobody off X-Factor."

---

What does this say about me, that I couldn't care less about RATM getting one over Simon Cowell but I'm incensed that someone's ripped off Miley Cyrus?

RATM has gone back to #1 on iTunes.

Amazingly, I've been given a mention on Twitter/Facebook for the person who currently owns the most copies. 9 copies between 2 people from 6 sources in this house.

i'm fearing that this campaign is going to lose, as they said RATM is only up by about 10,000 copies today, and with the CD version of the winner's song coming out on wednesday, that'll catch, if not overtake, RATM. not everyone who joined the f/b group have bought it :(

Got to say I didnt expect it to be this big, and so I am quite happy to be proven wrong for this!

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
Regardless of who wins, it will raise awareness about the chronic state of the charts, and might just restore some of the fuckedupness to the Christmas number one in the future - as it should be.

I'm not someone who follows the charts - I couldn't tell you any of the artists in either of the charts - but after religion (if you follow one) Christmas should be a time for a fun and laughs and X-factor getting number one every year goes against everything the spirit of Christmas ought to be about.
The Official Charts Company said today that it was "the fiercest battle for years" for the festive chart-topper.

Even if it loses, the point for many has already been achieved. It is not a given than X-Factor will win this year, even if it does.

i think it will take a campaign like this every year to stop it being a foregone conclusion, and unless we win, the whole thing will be forgotten by next christmas. and if there are campaigns like this in the future, people won't buy into it if it fails this time.

discussing this with someone at work today, she said it was just a harmless 3 minute song by the winner, and why should we stand in the way of it and make a big fuss over it. you just can't get through to some people, they can't see why we're doing this.

Yesterday Kerrang! radio urged all of their listeners to go out and buy the track. There's hope yet.

susan boyle @1:07 fits perfectly with the line, epic stuff :D
Hahaha, brilliant :D
Let's hope enough copies get bought to make it happen! It's got to be said, Radio 1 have been doing their bit as well - they've given this plenty of good publicity, and the song is getting played too - Nick Grimshaw played it on his show tonight, for example.

I hope your were being sarcastic an i missed it, but, the song belongs to Simon Cowell. He can do what he wants with it. Cyrus didn't write it, Simon's pop factory wrote it, so she shouldnt feel any sentimental attachment to it. This is what the whole campaign is getting at, Cowell's company's puppetry of modern music.

Been listening to RATM all week. Forgot how much 'Freedom' and 'War Within a Breath' kick arse!
