Pass around. Internet has already voted the Spice Girls to play in Baghdad, Rick Astley got an MTV award, and Lordi won Eurovision.

It's a good song, but how many will actually go out and get it just so the xfactor song isnt No.1?

Those who care about the general health of music, and hate how shows like X Factor have been @#$%& it up.

Great stuff Dave, count me in! :D

And there in lies your problem. More people like xfactor than who would have even heard of RATM.

Health of music? I am not fan of xfactor but it in noway whatsoever has contributed in a good or bad way to the health of music. Other than give a couple of people of their 15mins of fame. xfactor is primarily pop music and its pop music for a reason, its popular and RATM cant compete with that.

With regards to the health of music, in what way do you think shows like xfactor have contributed?

Like I said I am no fan of xfactor, or most pop music, but I generally accept whats on the TV is what most people like. If everyone thought the health of music was going downhill then shows like xfactor wouldnt even exist because they'd be no audience...

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
I'm supporting this.

Chet, your points are valid and you are right in a way. but shows like this give people fame on a plate, and it's the fame and money that the contestants actually want, more than the ability to write and record and play their own music to the world.

how many contestants say "i want this sooo much" or "i've wanted this all my life"? if they had been any good and had any real talent, then some record company or other would have signed them upon hearing their demos. no, what they really just want is fame, the music is in a very distant second place. and their sob stories help their cause, and endear them to the gullible public who lap it up. in future, if shows like this are going to carry on (please god, no!) then the person should walk on, say their name, and just sing, with no backstory or any reason to make the judges or audience feel sorry for them.

whoever wins the show will be no.1, it's become tradition now. even if the winner sang Baa Baa Black Sheep, it'd still be no.1 as it has nothing to do with music, because the little girls who watch the show will buy it regardless. and 6 months down the line, the winning act will be forgotten. yes, Leona, Alexandra, and JLS are big right now, but see if they're all still making music, or remembered in 5 or 10 years.

it is detrimental to the health of music because the money is being spent on puppets like the X Factor "stars", instead of proper bands who drive up and down the country in a van playing in pubs and clubs, trying to make it the proper way. the reality show singers are favourable because the investment pays back instantly. so record companies expect this from the proper artists, but when they don't get that instant success off their first album or single, they are dropped.

Muks, whilst I generally applaud your points, I have to respond to the one regarding bands driving up and down the country in a van.

X-Factor is there to produce processed pop music for solo artists or boy/girl groups, because that's cheapest to produce and generates the highest revenue from promotional outlay. There is nothing in the format which supports bands or individuals who can play their own instruments, so I don't think it's fair to criticise the show on that front. It's like criticising a domestic cat breeder for not selling enough tigers.

I don't give a stuff about who gets the Xmas No.1. Co-incidentally, I also don't give a stuff about how much these reality TV stars earn. If Rage Against The Machine wanted to earn that much, they could re-form as a boy band and appear on Britain's Got Talent. They're not in the market for getting Number One albums and lots of cheap fame, they exist to produce the kind of music that they enjoy writing, and a small minority of people love listening to.

They're two different worlds, and I don't see why they should be forced to compete with each other.

Um, I think they've contributed nothing except to screw it up, as I said? :P

Good stuff Dave - i'm in :)

More people like xfactor than who would have even heard of RATM.

Um. 500,000 is approxmiatly what the Xmas #1 sells in recent years. Pretty sure enough people have heard of them.

I think your kinda missing the point. It isn't about RATM, it isn't about music genres. It is just about pissing off Simon Cowell.

i see what you mean here. but while the music industry (Cowell included) is focusing on these cheap throw-away acts, they are not looking at the bands that do write and play instruments. i don't want a "bands" category to be included in talent shows, but the money and time is not being spent on finding the real talent that is out there, it's being wasted on producing their own stars through TV shows. it surely has a knock-on effect on unsigned bands who don't get funding because the money is going to these reality artists instead.

The campaigns will probably make its way in The Sun, Simon will read it, and send out his minions to buy the xfactor single by the bucket load.

Even if RATM don't make it to No. 1, I suspect it'd at least get into the top ten. People will wonder why, and the issue will be raised. It's all about getting a message across.

Sales are regulated. When copies are sold in mass investigations are raised. Anyway, it's already been on Radio 1 etc

This has nothing to do with RATM btw. They were just the band chosen to try and beat destroy Cowells strangle hold on the charts. It could have been any other band. Even if you don't like RATM and just don't want another Cowell Xmas lock out, buy the single on iTunes (99p) to do your bit.

Below is a list of the top ten selling records of the past decade. It is certainly a sad state of affairs, with only one real pop icon as such, that being Kylie. Not one proper band on the list yet bloody Bob the builder is.

1. Will Young - Evergreen
2. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody
3. Shaggy - It Wasn't Me
4. Tony Christie/Peter Kay - Is This The Way To Amarillo?
5. Band Aid 20 - Do They Know It's Christmas?
6. Hear’Say - Pure And Simple
7. Shayne Ward - That's My Goal
8. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
9. Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It
10. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again
The campaign was one of the features on Radio Newcastle this morning. :)

So in fact, the only artists there who have achieved top-selling records by their own hard graft are Shaggy, Kylie and Atomic Kitten.

An interesting bit of trivia for you, Atomic Kitten are actually Liverpool's second-highest selling group in history, after The Beatles.

Whole Again - Written by Bill Padley, Stuart Kershaw, Andy McCluskey and Jeremy Godfrey
It wasn't Me - Wirrten by Shaggy
Can't Get You Out Of My Head Written by Cathy Dennis, Rob Davis

So actually, only 1 has.

Band Aid doesn't get away with just being a charity single because all they did was repackage an old song. It was a money making machine disguised as charity.
