Rage Against X-Factor. Killing In The Name of for UK Xmas #1

Posted by DaveEllis
Good point LS. It's easy to forget these days that Kylie, when she started out, was just as manufactured as Leona and Alexandra. She just got discovered a different way.

And yeah, Band Aid 20 was about making as much money as possible, just as much as it was about turning a great original song into a pile of crap. It was one of the worst-disguised money-makers I can think of TBH.
Which is also why it surprises me that there hasn't been a Band Aid 25 this year. I would've thought the 25th anniversary of the original would be the one they'd be most keen to capitalise on.

It's not as if Band Aid 20's money-making was lining the pockets of its producers, all the money went to charity. How can anyone object to that??

It was more about people like Bono and Geldof having a hard-on. Bono trying to control the entire thing and re-record parts of it with his voice (seriously) just so he could have a slightly bigger part. He didn't give the slightest @#$%& about Band Aid. He just wanted the whole world to see HIM doing something good, which defeats half the point in it anyway.

Band Aid 20 was a stroke job. Nothing more.

Ummmmmmmm..... WTF is this?

Please explain for this lost American. Guess X-Factor is your version of that horrible American Idol shite?

BTW, RATM rules.

The Flanker is gone. :(
Pretty much. Unfortunatly it was invented over here as Pop Idol then ported to you by Mr. Cowell.

As a UK resident I can only apologise for that.

Changed to X Factor for maximum "scraping the barrel" purposes.

* Changed to X-Factor to allow groups to compete alongside solo artists, thus tapping into a lucrative second market.

(I'm sorry, as a former business studies student I can't help but respect Simon Cowell's vision, even if it's not exactly my taste in TV!)

What, taking an everyday Joe, thrusting them into a world they don't know and then when it goes tits up in year or 2, casting them aside like the quick buck they always were?

The pop world is a cut throat market - you need instant and sustained success, and if you don't deliver at some point, then you're left to rot. That's not so bad for those who've been brought up around music (you must develop a certainly amount of resilience and diversity), but for someone who works on scaffolding in Sheffield normally, it's a huge change that they can't expect to just ride out until they're not deemed profitable.

I can appreciate the money Cowell makes, but can't respect the way he goes about getting it.
Hasnt pop always been like that though Gav?

Its full of one hit wonders and solos/groups who make a couple good songs then are never heard from again.

"Trulli was slowing down like he wanted to have a picnic" LOL
Not especially. Most of the one hit wonders actually come from people like Cowell. Successful (but obviously manufactured) pop acts? Abba? Spice Girls? I'm sure someone who knows more about mainstream music can pump off a few more who at least managed a good handful of albums.

Did anyone else watch Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Extras christmas special a couple of years ago? It was the one where Andy Millman hit his lowest ebb and debased himself by appearing on celebrity big brother. But in the house he has his moment of epiphany. Well, (long story to make a simple point), he says at one point something quite insightful.

I can't remember the exact quote but he says that the Victorian freak show never went away. Instead now we have X Factor and Britain's Got "Talent", where the desperate and bewildered and wheeled out and sniggered at by multimillionaires.

That's the bit that I've never liked or got into. Quite honestly I don't give a sh*t about manufactured pop anyway but I do like the idea of pissing off Simon Cowell. I'm in.
Isnt RATM record company Epic owned by Sony , who Cowell has business interests with.?

LS's Tip of the week
ESSENTIAL OILS aren't essential unless you're an engine, a gearbox or a twat
As discussed on the Facebook Group, yes. However it is completely irrelevant, as if RATM went #1 then the sales would be going to Epic/Sony/RATM, and Cowell would see nothing of it.

Some pop is, but most are still people who have actually put some effort into getting there, so will have hardened themselves against various set-backs over time. This lot are just looking for an easy way in, then if they do make it, are instantly thrown in front of the world.

Look at [does a Google for the name] Susan Boyle - she (apparently) had a breakdown due to the sudden fame and expectations.
Yep. But to paraphrase and old saying, "I will open the door for you, but it is your responsibility if you choose to walk through it."

Simon Cowell gives these people an opportunity. He merely opens the door for them. They are not obligated to walk through it, but if they do, it's up to them to handle the pressure. If they're not up to the job, it's no skin off Cowell's nose.

Just realised this is quite a way off-topic from the original discussion. Ahem.

Take That were created as a reaction to New Kids On The Block's success, Boyzone were created as a reaction to Take That's success, Westlife were created to capitalise on Boyzone's success, the Spice Girls were created to be a female version of Boyzone/Take That, and so it continues (and happened before New Kids... but i can't remember who they would have been a reaction to in the 80s).

all of these people auditioned to be in a group, but hardly any of them came from a musical background or had any musical talent to begin with (maybe Gary Barlow was a musician before).

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael
I want RATM to be your number one. It would be funny and a good display of people power etc.

HAVING SAID THAT

The man's a genius - there's a market, he's capitalised on it. Another problem I have with all this is that singer Mika - not mentioning him purely for the namesake but he's a reasonable example of a pop performer with the musical ability and whatnot that we're all claiming these vapid run-of-the-mill manufactured ones don't have, but I've seen him slagged off relentlessly on these forums. I don't have much time for his music, but I respect what it is.
Congratulations. You made headlines in Denmarks #1 tabloid.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.
Although I'm sure we all hate tabloids, all news is good news in this case!

The Facebook Group is now well past 500,000 members. If everybody in the group bought 1 copy, assuming they are all in the UK, it'd be a rival for #1. But of course not everyone will be in the UK, and it's extremely unlikely they will all buy a copy. But heres hoping.

That's really awesome. And TBH, given the number of copies the UK #1 usually sells each week, there should be enough people in the group alone to guarantee it gets to #1, as long as we all buy it at once.

Ah but this is the Christmas #1, the stakes are a little higher. 40% of all revenue generated by the music industry in the UK is generated in the month of December. The Christmas #1 is, without fail, the highest-selling debut week single released during the year. So it takes something special (or a gimmick like X-Factor) to secure it.
