Top Gear will return, BBC insists

The BBC said it was "expecting" all three Top Gear hosts to return
Top Gear will return in the summer, the BBC has said - despite host Jeremy Clarkson declaring that it will not.

At the end of latest series last week, the BBC Two announcer assured viewers the show would be back in the summer.

But in his newspaper column in The Sun, Clarkson said: "Can I just say, here and now, it won't be."

A BBC spokesman responded by saying: "Top Gear will be back. A summer special is planned." A new series would reach screens in the autumn, he added.

"We're expecting all three boys to present the programmes."

But he refused to give any further details or explain the confusion.

The show made a successful comeback in January, four months after co-host Richard Hammond was involved in a serious high-speed crash while filming.

An estimated eight million people tuned in to see the last episode in the series on Sunday - BBC Two's largest audience for 10 years.

i didn't know what JC had said, but heard on the radio today that BBC bosses said TG would return, despite JC saying it wouldn't.

Does that mean perhaps that Clarkson won't be back? :(

All he said is that it wouldn't be back in the summer. Wow.

...and if BBC spokeswoman said that there will be a summer special, and that the new series will start during autumn, and 1+1 is 2, then there will be very likely one summer special and the series will start during autumn.

The way he said it, 'can i just say, right now, it won't be' is really dramatic though.

It will either be back with Clarkson or not at all - he owns the conceptual rights to the programme.

clarksons humour would have him being clever, saying IT WONT BE ON, as in over the summer, as in the series wont start over summer :P

itll be an autumn start, with LOTS of filming all summer. its gonna be an amazing series!

You have to remember with Hammond's accident they are now out of sync. Usually they have an October ish series, and then another in April. It's a bit close to April now to film another so the obvious thing would be to skip a series and return to normal in the Autumn.

Have you ever heard Clarkson being subtle? ;)

This is one of the major stories in The Mirror... nothing at all has been said to suggest TG won't be back, and all of a sudden it's all over the national press... :|

'Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson has sparked fears there will not be a new series of the hit show, after announcing the planned summer special is not going ahead.

The outspoken presenter of the award-winning BBC car show is said to be in rows with producers over its format and has claimed the show will not return in the summer.

Clarkson wrote in his column in Britain's Sun newspaper at the weekend: "After last week's 'Top Gear', the TV announcer said it would be back in the summer. Can I just say, it won't be."

At the end of the last episode of the series, which aired last week, Clarkson closed by saying: "We don't know when we'll be back."

Clarkson and his co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond are said to be in a disagreement with producers, as they want the cars to be the stars of the show, and not the increasing appearances by celebrity guests.

A BBC spokesperson said: "'Top Gear' will come back. A summer special is planned and 'Top Gear' will return in the autumn. We're expecting all three boys to present the programmes."

i've never thought a disproportionate amount of time was devoted to celebrities. and although a little plugging of their new book/movie is done, it's still generally about their cars in the Stars in Cars feature.

I hope that when they say "producers" they mean the BBC, rather than the actual producers, Andy Wilman etc, as that would imply a proper split.

My mate did some work experience with the BBC, including helping out on TG for a week or so. He said James May is awesome, great bloke. Apparently Clarkson is really demanding, nasty. He said he shouted at one bloke for about 5 minutes because one pic on the cool wall was of the wrong angle of the car :|

I bet he is quite controlling though

Oh yeah, I bet he's a total prick. You can just see it in his whole demeanour on the show.

Watch until the end, the Stig speaks! And the voice is very familiar.

Also, James May said in an interview that Top Gear will be back with all three presenters, they just don't know how they are going to spread it out over the year. So presumably, it just won't be in the summer.
