With Piquet being so prone to crashing before Singapore, Renault may have just used him in a slightly different way to what the reports are suggesting...
If you just told him to push the limit of the car, then odds are that he would just lose it somewhere. If he did, then it fits nicely for Alonso. If he didn't, he got more out of the car. Win-Win situation really.
This would also support the notion that Piquet gave the tip-off, feeling he was being used to bend the rules to Renaults advantage.
Just an idea. Probably not a very good one, but still.
