The FIA is to launch an investigation into the events at last year's Singapore Grand Prix, where Renault's Fernando Alonso claimed victory on the back of a crash by his team-mate Nelson Piquet.

Alonso's success was sealed by the timing of a safety car in the early stages of the inaugural event - which had been called out when Piquet crashed into the wall shortly after his team-mate stopped for fuel.

The timing of Piquet's crash prompted wild conspiracy theories that the Brazilian had been ordered to deliberately spin to help Renault take its first victory of the year. Piquet himself insisted at the time that the accident had been caused by him simply trying too hard.

Wonder how this will play out? Surely it could only be evidence from Piquet to trigger this?

Finally! it was a long known fact that it was planned :)

Ah, yes, glad international press caught this. It'll be interesting to see how they'll handle a penalty, if one is given, would Alonso be stripped of his win? I think that would be a bit silly, but you never know. It would effectively give Rosberg his first win though ;)

Wow, if Piquet is doing this to get back at Briatore, what a way to do it! ;)

Tbh, i hope that the points aren't changed, because it would be a pity to change the championship margin now.

Also, if it is proven true, then the actions probably cost Massa the championship as well, from the resulting SC and his pitstop dramas. I think Ferrari should protest! ;)

LOL!

If found out would result in a major penalty for Renault.

I highly doubt this what happened though! Quite funny though that its beign investigated.

Holy crap! We've seen races from previous weeks investigated in this way, but previous seasons?! This is unprecedented, certainly in the nature of the accusation involved.

If it was proven true then they probably would have grounds to protest. You can speculate forever about what could've happened of course, but the fact is that Massa was leading strongly when the SC came out and seemed to have the race well under control, and probably would've scored enough points without his pitstop problem to outweigh the eventual amount he lost to Lewis by.

Does this mean Damon Hill can still win the 1994 World Championship?

Heh, spot on! Exactly what I was thinking. Where does it end? Can Prost still be the 1990 Champion? Senna the 1989 Champion?

So I was thinking. Is it illegal to crash your car? I don't know of any regulations which specifically prohibit you sticking your car in the wall. Can you actually penalise a team for retiring a car like that?

I was only joking, you can't protest on hypothetical means. ;)

Unless they protest for the race to become null and void ;)

Not sure what the actual penalty would be - team orders maybe?

There's no rule against blocking your team mate before your final qualifying run but Alonso still got a 5 place grid penalty in Hungary 2007.

If Piquet did deliberately crash he's beyond pathetic, but then to grass the team up nearly a year later because they sacked you, well thats a real low.

Piquet hasn't grassed them up. He is so bitter that if he was grassing them up then it'd be all over his Twitter page by now.

Maybe, but by doing that, he would lose any of the little impartiality he already has in the eyes of the FIA. I don't know if he is smart enough to consider that though, but maybe he and his dad devised this plan of action and thought it through.

well unsportmanship is not allowed in any sports so this would go to that category like the Hamilton-Alonso thing at hungary 2007 also :)

There have been countless examples of that that went unpunished. So you can't just make up a regulation for it.

I wonder what the charge against the Renault team would be, if this goes ahead. And even more interesting will be the penalty. They can't exclude them from the results now, can they?

Ferrari should protest and say that it cost them the victory! ;)
But yeah, being Globo TV and anonymous tip off it's all making me think Piquet.

Also anyone see this going on his twitter page during the race? This is just implying he's really bitter about being kicked out of the team. Anyway, let's see what the FIA do now. However I really don't think anything will come of this, probably it will be a telling off or just plain classed off as racing incident. Although we don't have the inside data and chats within the team
