Keep in mind that these screensohts may be faked by an photoshop expert. :) If PS3 is better than Xbox 360, who cares? I can't wait for PS3. I'm totally fred up to my PS1. And both of these consoles will beat PS1 that's for sure and that's enough for me. :D But seriously, I know that I must have harddrive to play Xbox 1's games but can I play burned xbox 1 games? Or do I need a modchip for that?

of course the price will come down over time, but yields are apparently pretty bd thus far. What that means is while stockpiling consoles, its costing x amount ot make, so those consoles have to sell for near that x price. This is tough when xbox360 can be 1/2 ps3's price upon the release of ps3,if microsoft want.

no. what i meant was that you might have been looking at a unit price of the ps3 cpu. when you mass machine something you dont have to worry about machine setup costs anymore (which takes majority of the time) therefore the unit price drops dramatically. anyway about the problem you mention im sure a corporation as big as sony wouldve forseen that. i think they'll be alright ;)

No, the machine costs arent included. This is cost per cpu, based on yields per wafer of cpus. Apparently they can get 65 successful Cell cpus from every wafer - "each wafer run through the fab costs $9-10K, and IBM gets about 65 good chips per wafer" - simple maths = $150 give or take a bit. Toss in $25-30 for the packaging, and you are at a non-trivial number for a console. Assuming $175 for a 'solder to the board' working Cell, and you are at about half the cost of the console with just the CPU.

The figures dont include cost of building the fab plant. As I said, it will go down, but its not good atm.

I didnt, my store was allocated 50 X-box 360s, so we took preorders for 50. Then microsoft turn around and say we're only actually getting 6.

There is no where near enough to go around, despite Microsofts origional claims

Argos. Our store isnt a high priority store though, so Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow etc may get more, but they've also got more pre-orders than us.

Graphics can't be the deciding factor on next generation consoles, they all will pretty much be incredible (but you need a HDTV to notice the difference to a regular one), it will come down to developers associated with Sony, MS, or Nintendo to make the best games that give us more possibilities within them, such as exploring a richly made world, very deep storylines and what we can do in the games.

A nice slow clap for Gui, if you please!

Stating the obvious was never quite so eloquently done before him ;)

he's right though, for me the main reason to get a next gen console just isnt the graphics. Its that the next in the series of all the best games (MGS, GT, GTA...) will not be on ps2 / xbox anymore. That's my logic for console upgrading, not graphics.

ah so basically you're just another victim trapped in Sony/Microsofts marketing web. Those games are my poison also ;)

I know it's obvious but so many people seem to overlook that aspect, so it must be brought back to the argument here!

seems like a rocky launch for the 360 - [www.techreport.com] ;)

Sony is probably having a laugh at this...

I wonder if the X360 will be this generation's Dreamcast!

I never knew they were losing so much. Thats quite a big percent. $126 loss per console!

So qwerty, Sony isnt the only who's going to be losing out on hardware manufacturing costs. However I think the key at the end of the day will be the PS3 will probably have a lot more titles than the 360,like with the current generation of consoles. So they should be able to recover the costs a little better than Microsoft and can afford to spend those extra costs on putting a little bit more into the hardware and providing the better and bugfree (hopefully) console unlike the 360 ;)
