We're really pleased with Satoshi's performance in the free practices, and I think we will reward him for his effort with the race driver seat alongside Kimi at least in Japan at his home grand prix.

Barrichello Pips Schumacher to Indianapolis Pole
Barrichello is on pole for the race at this years American Grand Prix after just edging out his former teammate Michael Schumacher to pole position by just under five thousandths of a second. Montoya lines up third on the grid, two tenths behind his team mate, whilst Heidfeld put in a stunning lap to put his Sauber fourth. Other notable performances came from Fisichella who managed to take 6th on the grid in his Renault, whilst Button and Trulli made it into the top ten, occupying the 9th and 10th place grid slots respectively.

Wow, it seems that we lost much pace over night, looks like it'll be a difficult race, maybe we should do some rain dances before it starts ;)

American Grand Prix Race Coverage

Hello and welcome to coverage of the 2004 American Grand Prix from the Indianapolis circuit. Continuing both his and William's excellent form so far this season Rubens Barrichello is sat in pole position with Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya just behind him. Anyway we're are ready for the off...

...and we're away

Both William's are very defensive down into turn 1 with Barrichello trying to fend off Schumacher and Montoya trying to stop Heidfeld

But whilst Rubens succeeds Heidfeld slides past Montoya to take 3rd

In the foreground Montoya is looking to come straight back at Heidfeld

And he makes the move stick

Webber is currently tussling with the two Toyotas over 5th place

And the Jaguar driver goes through into 5th place

Coulthard has just clattered into the back of his team mate who has dropped several places at the start

And as the two Renaults are side by side going through the final corner Barrichello pops up with the fastest lap of the race

Raikkonen is having a look at Trulli's 14th place

And the Fin goes through

Davidson has quite a large moment as the back steps out on him under braking

Which allows McNish to move into 17th place

Verstappen is the next driver having a look down into turn 1

And he also goes through at the expense of Button

Schumacher is still running in 2nd place as the top four are beginning to pull away from the pack

Ohhhh and Coulthard is very wide in the final corner

But he just manages to drag the car out of the wall

Glock is currently running in the points in 7th place

Barrichello improves on his own fastest lap time

Alonso is next on McNish's hitlist after climbing back up from 18th place

And the Scot goes through

Verstappen is having a go at Da Matta

And he moves up into 9th

With ten laps gone it's time for the current standings

McNish is head to head with Raikkonen

And he takes the position

A few laps later and McNish is now looking at demoting Da Matta to 11th

But the Brazilian holds him off

But he is right under Da Matta's gearbox going into turn 8

He throws it up the inside

And makes it stick, easily the best overtake of the day so far

Meanwhile both of their team mates are battling over Webber's 5th place

But it looks as though the Jaguar has a tad more straight line speed then the Toyota

Raikkonen is looking at Fisichella's 12th place

And he gains the position

Trulli has dropped dramtically from his 10th place grid slot and he currently resides in 19th place

Actually make that 20th thanks to De la Rosa

Riding onboard with Alonso in 15th as Montoya sets a new fastest lap

And the pitstops have started as 3rd placed Montoya and 4th placed Heidfeld head into pit road.

Montoya is back out in 9th in clean air

Whilst Heidfeld is not so lucky as he joins a train of cars battling over 10th

Schumacher is now in the pits as Barrichello goes fastest

He's back out in 5th, comfortably ahead of Montoya

Our leader is the last of the front runners to pit

And he comes out in a net 1st place with Schumacher in the background

Webber is in now as well

As is Verstappen

Meanwhile it looks as though Da Matta has no intention of pitting anytime soon as he looks to be on a 1 stop strategy

So now that everyone has pitted once (with the exception of Da Matta) here are the current standings

Villenueve was unable to jump Webber in the stops and cannot get a good enough run off the final corner to get alongside in turn 1, he could be in for a long afternoon

Whilst Glock has now dropped out of the points

Da Matta is now in for his one and only stop

Lotterer is having a quiet race down in 16th place

And finally after laps of perseverance Villenueve slides past Webber to move into 5th

Raikkonen kicks start the final round of pitstops

And he is joined in the pitlane by Verstappen

Barrichello has now also pitted

And he comes out just ahead of a lapped Davidson

Montoya and Schumacher are now pitting

Barrichello retains the lead

Schumacher retains second

and Montoya is still third

Webber is in the process of rejoining the track

Which allows Da Matta to move into 5th

And after spending the vast majority trying to get past Webber, Villenueve is behind the Aussie once again

Barrichello will have to do something stupid or be very unlucky to lose this now

And with just fourteen laps to go here are the standings

It's fair to say that both Sato and BAR are not having a good season so far as the Japanese driver is lapped by Heidfeld

Alonso is looking to regain some pride as he challenges Raikkonen for 16th

But it all comes to nothing

With just two to go Montoya sets the fastest lap

And Barrichello is into the final corner

And he wins the American GP

Schumacher takes second

Whilst Montoya completes the podium

Championship tables and driver signings will be posted tomorrow. Also apologies of the somewhat stunted coverage compared to normal but pretty much naff all happened after the first pit stops and that fact no one ever went off the track or spun didn't exactly help to make the race interesting ;)

BAR

As our season is practically lost, we will replace Ralf Schumacher for quite a few races. Bas Leinders can take it over and prove his worth. We have nothing to lose anyway.
We must surely fluke a point at some time...I'm sure both Davidson and De La Rosa can capitalise on any races of attrition.

At least we could gain some places, but points seem to be far away at the moment. I hope the test session in Jerez helps us to improve our pace.

Franck Montagny has today confirmed that he will be leaving the Jaguar team, set to become Red Bull next season, in order to test for the popular Italian minnows. The deal is reported to be worth around £4m

There was great news for the hardcore F1 fans today as it was confirmed that Jacques Villenueve will be returning to the team with which he famously won his one and only world title back in 1997. Whilst his current team, Toyota, we're also negotiating to retain the driver for the 2005 season they were unable to match the Williams offer.
