Good job from Trulli but not good enough from Wilson who needs to improve.
Canadian Grand Prix Race Day

Hello and welcome to coverage of the 2004 Canadian Grand Prix live from Montreal. Juan Pablo Montoya is sat on pole position and will be looking to bring home maximum points to cement his position of 2nd in the drivers championship after Schumacher's poor qualifying. Meanwhile McNish and Verstappen will be looking to convert their grid slots into podium finishes. Anyway onto the race and the five lights are on.

And we're away and Montoya looks sluggish off the line which hampers Verstappen start

Which allows Da Matta to slide past both Verstappen and McNish to move into second place

Schumi is still in 9th at the moment and has Raikkonen just behind

And Raikkonen moves to the inside whilst in the foreground Da Matta is challenging Montoya for the lead...

... and he makes the move stick! Fantastic start from Da Matta to move from 5th to 1st

But things are about to get worse for Montoya as his poor exit of the final chicane has allowed McNish to get alongside

And the Scot is now past as well

Now its Verstappens turn to have a go at the Colombian

And he's through as well

And to add insult to injury Heidfeld makes the most of Montoyas poor exit off the last corner

As does Barrichello

And Villenueve

Nightmare opening laps for Montoya as he's dropped six places in two laps

Now in the lead Da Matta posts the fastest lap yet

Only for Verstappen to beat it almost immediately

And that is not good for the other Schumacher

The replay shows that he was too brave into the corner and hits the wall

And indeed he retires a few moments later

A few moments after that Heidfeld pops up with the fastest lap

Now after a few laps here are the current standings

Things could be about to get worse for Montoya as Schumacher has taken almost a second out of him

And the German is having a look into turn 1

But Montoya shuts the door

There's quite a queue forming behind the Williams now

As Heidfeld sets another fastest lap

Da Matta is still in first but seems unable to pull away from McNish at the moment

Trulli is battling with Button for 14th

But he cannot get past

Montoya is struggling to hold off the Schumacher, surely it is just a matter of time...

Meanwhile Trulli has got a better run on Button...

... and he's having a go around the outside...

... and the Italian makes it stick

Montoya is really holding up Schumacher now as Glock is having a look at his fellow German

Our championship leader meanwhile currently is sitting in 5th place

Schumacher has finally got a run on Montoya...

... and he sails past

Heidfeld is the first to blink when he comes into the pits on lap 14

He's back out in 7th

Barrichello finally hooks a lap up as he sets the fastest lap

And Raikkonen is on the grass at turn 2

Verstappen pits at the same time as McNish

And a quick stop from the Ferrari team allows Verstappen to jump the Scot

Glock is now challenging Montoya for eight going into the hairpin

And he pulls it off, good move from the youngster as Barrichello sets the fastest lap

But Montoya is coming back at him down the back straight

And he retakes his position

And then Webber takes the opportunity to pass Glock for 9th

Barrichello and Da Matta are now into the pitlane

Giving Villenueve the temporary lead of his home grand prix

Whilst his teammate holds position ahead of Barrichello

Villenueve is now in the pits

And he re-emerges into 3rd place whilst Barrichello is now 2nd

Now with the first round of stops out the way here are the current standings

And McNish is off the road at turn 2

Looks as though he simply outbroke himself whilst defending from Montoya

Wilson has gained two places partiality thanks to Ralf Schumachers downfall and is now in 20th

Heidfeld has returned to the pits for bis second stop of the afternoon

But on leaving the pits he makes contact with Schumacher

And he is now facing the wrong way

That pretty much rules out any chance of points for the German

Meanwhile Montoya is into the pits for the first time. Looks like he's one stopping which would explain his poor pace at the start of the race

He's back out in 7th

Da Matta and Barrichello are now very close together and with traffic coming up

Meanwhile Villenueve pits from third

Barrichello is now obviously closer to Da Matta now

And although Da Matta has pulled some time out in the previous sector, Barrichello has gained a second over the last two laps.

And now both are in the pitlane

But Barrichello manages to jump Da Matta and now leads the race

Verstappen is now also into the pits

Which allows Villenueve to slide into the final podium spot which will no doubt please the crowd

And someone else is now off the road at turn 2

And it looks as though Sato has lost the back end coming out of the pits

But he manages to keep it out of the wall and doesn't lose any places, mainly due to the fact that he was already last...

Trulli is under pressure from Coulthard behind

And the Renault driver pulls off the overtake going into turn 1

Heidfeld has made his way up to 17th and is challenging Davidson for 16th

And he goes past the Brit in the final chicane

Glock is the pits from 7th

And Webber goes past him to take the final points place, although he is still yet to pit

De la Rosa has had a very quite race and currently resides in 19th

Schumacher is battling with his teammate for fourth

But that has allowed Montoya to catch right up

And on lap 54 the Wall of Champions clams its first victim in the form of Davidson

He won't be continuing after that

Schumacher is in the pitlane for the last time

Which allows McNish to move into sixth

And Montoya into 5th

Barrichello is now pulling away from Da Matta, looks like he has this one in the bag

Meanwhile with all the stops now done here are the current standings

Fisichella has hardly done anything this afternoon and sits in 12th

Villenueve is closing on his teammate, does he have enough time left to make a move?

Barrichello is going through the final chicane for the final time

And Barrichello sets the fastest lap as he wins again in 2004

He has now won half the races this season, unless Schumacher or Montoya can turn their fortunes around it is looking like the title is Barrichellos to lose

Da Matta crosses the line to take his second podium of the season

Whilst Villenueve takes his third third place for the third race of the trot

DOTD
For once the award will not be going to the race winner but instead to 2nd placed Cristiano Da Matta for a surperb opening lap that allowed him to climb from 5th on the grid to 1st place and without traffic problems he would have had a very good chance of winning the race.

Schumacher Departs from Ferrari
After todays race it was confirmed by Michael Schumacher that he will be leaving the Italian outfit that he has been a part of for eight years now to drive for Williams in 2005. The British outfit that currently leads both the drivers and constructors championships were willing to for out £21m to sign the services of the five time world champion. Of course several other teams were also interested in acquiring the services of Schumacher but none came close to William's offer.

Jenson Button has signed a contract to drive for Sauber in 2005 that is reported to be worth around £11m. Mainly due to his relatively poor performance this season no other teams showed interest in the driver.

Jordan Statement

André showed a good performance today, but we're a bit disappointed with Kimi's race. He probably would have been fighting for points if he didn't make this mistake which throw him to the back of the field.

Jordan will attend the test session at Jerez with Raikkonen and Lotterer, focusing on pace.

Sauber pleased to have Button on Board

Sauber boss Chris Copeman spoke of his joy at unvieling Jenson Button as part of Sauber's 2005 setup. Speaking at a specially called press conference after the Canadian race Copeman said, "I am pleased Jenson has come on board. We have been looking at him since I came on board and I am confident he can step up to the plate next year." Copeman refused to comment on the futures of both Timo Glock and Alex Wurz.

BAR

Unbelievable, the field is so close together that we're dead last now. We can't understand how this could happen after a promising season start where we were 5th fastest team. We are concentrating on keeping some extra money next year, so we can concentrate on having more test sessions and be on the top of the field again.
