2006 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix - Race

Part 1

Hello and welcome everyone to the second round of the 2006 Formula 1 season, here at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. Jenson Button will start from pole position today, as he also did in the previous GP at Bahrain. Next to him is Kimi Raikkonen in the McLaren, ahead of the two Ferraris in row 2. The weather forecasts say that we will see a dry race today, but in Malaysia you never know when exatly the next rain comes. The drivers are now returning from the formation lap, so lets go straight to the track for an hopefully exciting race.

The five red lights are on

And here they go! Raikkonen with a brilliant start already past Button

The Brit didn't have the best start, the Ferraris both try to attack him

Kubica also with a good start is already besides Massa

They go into turn 1

Coulthard at the inside of Lotterer

Kovalainen up one place, and Verstappen seems to have passed Button

He has, and Kubica too!

After passing Lotterer, Coulthard now attacks Massa for 5th

But he can't get past

In the back Ralf Schumacher runs wide

And loses many positions

Kubica now tries to overtake Verstappen on the outside, while Button tries the inner line

And Button bumps into Verstappen!

Kubica takes advantage and gets in 2nd

Lotterer after a bad start now in 7th place

At the top Raikkonen is already pulling away from the field

Now the counter attack of Verstappen

And he gets back in 3rd

Both Ferraris now under attack

Verstappen keeps his position, but Massa drops back behind Coulthard

Lotterer loses another position as Leinders gets past

Button with another attack, gets back in 3rd

Not much room here for Villeneuve

He touches Frentzen and sends him in a spin

Great move by Coulthard, that puts him in 4th

Quite some action now

Verstappen back in 4th, and both Leinders and Alonso trying to pass Massa

Kovalainen with a move on Lotterer

9th place for the Finn now, right behind Alonso

Contact between the two RedBulls! But luckily no damage to both

Heidfeld already up in 11th place

Montoya at the back end of the field

Fastest lap now for Raikkonen

And Coulthard has passed Verstappen! He got better out of the last corner than the Dutchman and is already ahead at the start-finish-line

Both Davidson and Montoya are passed here

Good race from Kovalainen so far, he can keep the speed of the cars ahead of him

Leinders and Alonso fighting hard for 7th

With 5 laps done, lets take a look at the standings

It's time for our first commercial break now. We'll be back soon!

Part 2

And we're back, just as Lotterer gets back 9th from Kovalainen

The RedBulls in a ToroRosso sandwich

Leinders with the attack on Massa, going into turn 1

And he gets past

Alonso takes advantage and overtakes the Ferrari, too

Missed by the cameras da Matta has passed Kovalainen

Montoya too late on the brakes, and he bumps in the back of Glock

Onboard with Michael Schumacher, and Montoya has spun just in front of him

Schumacher avoids Montoya, but he crashes into Glock!

Both are out of the race!

Meanwhile Montagny has passed Webber

And Verstappen now in front of Leinders again

Massa has lost another position to Lotterer

Montoya passes Frentzen for 19th

Now Leinders is passing Verstappen again!

But the Dutch fights back immediately

And again Alonso profits of the situation

Raikkonen with another fastest lap. He really is flying today

Now Alonso overtakes Verstappen. A fantastic move!

And we're back at the duel Verstappen versus Leinders

Going into turn 1, da Matta overtakes Lotterer

Guess what, it's Leinders against Verstappen again

Vettel defending his position against his teammate

da Matta on a run, now is up in 7th

It seems that Verstappen has made a driving error, as Lotterer gets past, too

A dominating performance from the McLaren team so far

Montoya and Villeneuve fighting for 17th

Kovalainen has passed Massa! The Super Aguri with a very good high speed on the straights today

The pitstops begin, da Matta is the first one in. Seems that he is on a 3 stop strategy

One lap later the leader pits

Followed by Kovalainen and Montagny

Vettel's stop wasn't planned, he has electrical problems

The next drivers are in for their first stops

Montoya passes Davidson going into the last corner

Kubica takes advantage of the fresh tyres and passes Verstappen

Coulthard, Webber and Davidson heading to the pits

Both Ferraris now side by side

And Massa gets past his teammate

Lotterer coming in the pits

Heidfeld goes out of Vettel's slipstream

and passes him

Button into the pits now

Followed by many others

Heidfeld and Vettel are still fighting

Verstappen is the last one to do his first stop

With everyone having stopped once, these are the current standings

With that we make another break. Stay tuned!
The rest of the race will follow tomorrow, I'm too tired to continue now.

Raikkonen and Montagny now in the pits

Frentzen re-overtakes Heidfeld

Kubica in the pits

And he comes out right behind Button

Heidfeld now is passed by Davidson

Oh, Kubica has dropped back behind Coulthard. Seems that he went off track somewhere

A team intern fight between the two Toro Rossos

Ralf Schumacher has passed Webber in the last corner

Watching Felipe Massa as we see the standings

Now Kovalainen attacks Webber

Contact between the Toro Rossos!

And Montagny spins! No damage, but he loses some places

Kubica with a move on Coulthard, but he stays behind

He tries again, and they touch! Nothing happens, but they lose much time in this fight

Heidfeld tries to overtake Webber

Webber stays ahead, but Kovalainen and Montagny are very close now

One lap later Heidfeld tries again

And this time he gets past

Vettel now coming in the pits

Kubica still behind Coulthard, and Alonso and Leinders have closed the gap to them

Now he is side by side with Coulthard, as is Leinders with Alonso!

Kubica gets past, but there's contact between Leinders and Alonso!

Alonso with great car control, avoids to spin

And both Leinders and Kubica driving in the pits, but Leinders has to drive through the grass!

And he spins!

He keeps the engine running and is now side by side with Coulthard

But he didn't left enough room for the Scot. They touch and Leinders spins in the pitlane!

Verstappen, who was on the way to his crew, is now too held up!

Coulthard finally has found a way to get past Leinders

And now Verstappen and Leinders, too, are driving again

Meanwhile Button leaves the pits after his final stop

Villeneuve now in the pits, too. Luckily for him he wasn't held up by this crazy incident

Massa and Davidson come in one lap later

And with that we make our final break. We'll be back soon!

The last two points places go to Massa and Coulthard

DOTD: Kimi Raikkonen. After a great start he dominated this race.

Honda

ARGH! That mistake in the pitland cost us points position! Bas did a good job though. Another poor showing from Anthony, who might be replaced quite soon.
Ferrari

Very disappointed with the result, seeing as we started from second row we cannot be satisfied, happily a few points got salvaged, already looking at round 3 now

If you are racing, keep on racing and get some points!

Bit of a disappointing race for us,da mattas 3 stop was the wrong strategy, and Ralf just had a bad day at the office,Least our cars are reliable though..just need to find more pace:)
McLaren

A brilliant race from both Robert and Kimi, and an strong result for the team. Now we have to keep up this pace.

Very disappointing result. We need less accidents and more no accidents. Let's hope things turn out better for us in Australia.
2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Free Practice

Today's Free Practice session has seen André Lotterer in his Midland topping the timesheets. His teammate Motoyama rounded off the good result for the team with 7th place. A big surprise was the performance of Timo Glock, who put his Super Aguri in 3rd place. Renault and Ferrari both seem to had one driver on low fuel, while the other one was doing long runs. The Honda team is still struggling to get up to speed after their good impressions at the pre season tests.

McLaren

It seems that the track doesn't fit to our car that good. We have some hard work to do to find a good setup for the qualifying.
