2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Qualifying

Robert Kubica was the fastest man in the qualifying today, almost 2 tenths faster than Fernando Alonso in 2nd. Kubica's teammate Raikkonen follows in 3rd place, ahead of the two BWMs. Andre Lotterer couldn't repeat his performance of the Free Practice, but he still is in the top 10. Both Ferraris were not able to go the speed of the top teams, they only qualified 13th and 16th. The RedBulls too are not yet at the level they had last season, 17th and 18th sure is a disappointing result for them. Michael Schumacher had a disatrous session with 21st place, the only man slower than him was Franck Montagny.

Honda
Quite happy with the qualifying results, looking forward to the race!
Manager Update

It appears that DStonesF1 has gone awol from his position as Super Aguri team boss. As a result, he will be replaced with immediate effect by Pluis.

Welcome to the series Pluis!

In addition, Lucasinio and Tozequio have been removed from the waiting list as neither have logged onto the site in the last six months.

Shame to see someone go awol but sometimes life gets in the way, like me earlier in the season. Atleast Pluis will get a chance to manage now :D

Sorry about this. Life caught up with me. I was only just about able to beat the activity checks in GPGSL! BTW Twig, your inbox is full

Toyota

11th and 12th not bad for us,with a good strategy we can make the points :)

What happened with the quali format,we back to the original?
Super Aguri

After practice I hoped for a good quali, unfortunately Glock couldn't get the same speed as yesterday, still a good performance of Kovalainen.
BMW Sauber
Nice to see the track compliments our cars, lets try and do a error free race, and shoot for the win..
Damnit, I forgot the new quali format again, sorry for that.

The race has been run, it should be up tomorrow.

2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Race

Part 1

Welcome everybody here in Melbourne for the 3rd round of the 2006 Formula 1 season. It's very sunny today, and we're looking forward to an hopefully exciting race. Robert Kubica will start from pole position, with Fernando Alonso right behind him. The cars are now returning from their formation lap, so let's go to the track for the start of the race.

The red lights are off, and here they go!

Raikkonen got away very quick, he's already in 2nd

He even takes the lead going into turn 1

Lotterer too has gained 2 positions

Button up in 4th behind Coulthard

The two Hondas in 8th and 9th

Villeneuve has dropped back to 11th

What a bad start for Alonso, he dropped back from 2nd to 7th

Heidfeld with a brilliant start, up from 19th to 14th

Schumacher now in last place

Ralf Schumacher has passed Leinders

Heidfeld and Verstappen fighting hard

Coulthard sits in the back of Kubica, it seems that he could go faster

Villeneuve defending 11th against da Matta

Frentzen and Webber fighting for 15th

Montagny and Vettel side by side

And the Toro Rosso driver gets past

Raikkonen with the fastest lap, and he is already starting to pull away

Coulthard now goes for 2nd

He gets it, nice move by the Scot

Schumacher has passed Vettel

Massa now back in 16th

Montoya with problems to get his tyres to temperature

Lotterer with a first try, but Montoya stays ahead

In the back we can see that Heidfeld has managed to pass Verstappen

Lotterer with another try, and this time he gets through

Villeneuve in 10th now after overtaking Leinders

Raikkonen already with a big gap to second placed Coulthard

Glock has to defend hard against Montagny

Missed by the cameras Heidfeld has passed da Matta

With 3 laps done, these are the standings

Alonso locks up his brakes

Heidfeld now also past Leinders

Massa up in 14th after passing his teammate

Gock runs wide! This drops him back to last place

And with that we make our first break, we'll be back soon!

2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Race

Part 2

We're back again, and Villeneuve now is right behind Ralf Schumacher

And he crashes into the German!

Luckily no damage to the cars, but Schumacher runs wide

He goes back on the track just in front of Leinders, who has no chance to avoid a collision!

Leinders has lost a front wheel, the cars are now lining up behind and besides him

And there's another crash!

Debris all over the place

Schumacher has lost his front wing, but it seems that he can continue the race

Kovalainen too with a damaged wing

Montagny without front and back wing

Massa's car seems to be all right, he now tries to overtake da Matta

With success

Webber, Verstappen and Schumacher fighting for 14th

Here come Montagny, Kovalainen and Ralf Schumacher, all of them get new wings

Meanwhile Alonso has passed Montoya

Frentzen tries to pass da Matta on the outside

And he makes it, great move!

After this big incident, let's take a look at the standings again

Heidfeld attacks Villeneuve for 9th

and gets past. A great race so far from Heidfeld

Raikkonen again with a fastest lap, it seems that he is on another strategy as the drivers behind him

Davidson now very close to Montoya

Schumacher tries to pass Verstappen going in to turn 11

and Verstappen goes off the track

This allows Glock and Vettel to pass him

But they both get the wrong line for turn 12 and run wide!

And Vettel hits the tyre wall as he tries to get his car in the right directoin

He will have to pit for a new front wing

da Matta retakes his position from Frentzen

A few seconds later Frentzen is also passed by Webber, and da Matta locks up right in front of them

Webber takes this chance, and passes him immediately

Vettel now in the pits

da Matta brakes too late again, and now he hits Webber

and he spins!

He made the same mistake as Vettel, he hit the wall as he tried to get his car back in the right directoin

Michael Schumacher now right behind Webber

da Matta after his pitstop now in 20th place

Lotterer side by side with Button

and he gets past and is now in 4th place

Davidson still very close to Montoya

He locks up while braking for turn 1

luckily he can keep the line

He tries to pass Montoya on the way to turn 3

but he can't find a way past

Schumacher now in 12, missed by the cameras he has passed Webber

Davidson tries again, and behind them Massa and Heidfeld are side by side

Massa now up in 9th

And Davidson has passed Montoya, who now is already attacked by Massa

They both brake way too late

And Montoya can stay ahead

Massa doesn't give up and tries again

And this time he passes Montoya

It's time for some more commercials, stay tuned!
2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Race

Part 3

We're back again, and see that Coulthard now has a slight gap to Kubica

Heidfeld has passed Montoya, 9th place now for him

And this doesn't look good for Massa, an oil leak ends his race

Frentzen goes out of Webber's slipstream

And gets past

Ralf Schumacher attacks Montagny for 16th

The Frenchman tries to defend his position

But in the end Schumacher gets past him

His brother Michael meanwhile has passed his teammate Villeneuve, who locks up his brakes going into turn 1

Alonso in 6th tries his best to catch his teammate Button

da Matta overtakes Kovalainen into turn 1

And Kubica has closed the gap to Coulthard

The leader Raikkonen is the first to come in the pits

Gets back on track in 4th

Heidfeld now too in the pits

Montoya keeps on dropping backwards, now Schumacher has passed him

Coulthard now in the lead

What's this? Davidson has lost his front wheel in the pitlane

Lets have a look at the replay.

He is lapping Vettel here

And spins!

He then wants to get in the pits for his stop, but loses control as he drives over the grass between track and pitlane entry, and crashes in the wall

Button now in for his stop. Luckily the marshalls managed to get away Davidson's car very quick

Many drivers pitting now, they all seem to be on a two stop strategy

We're riding onboard with Lotterer as we see the standings

Webber and da Matta fighting for 14th, and they're about to be lapped

da Matta overtakes Webber

Frentzen currently running in 8th

Frentzen now right behind Button

But he doesn't attack him as he comes in the pits a few moments later

The other one stoppers follow him

Coulthard now too in the pits

This puts Raikkonen back in the lead

Coulthard gets out just ahead of Lotterer

da Matta coming in for his stop

Lotterer now tries to pass Coulthard, but he stays behind him

Vette in the pits

Coulthard, Lotterer and Kubica very close now

The German still trying to pass Coulthard

He has the lighter car, but he doesn't find a way through

Wtih that we make our final break, we'll be back soon with the final laps of the Australian GP!
2006 Foster's Australian Grand Prix - Race

Part 4

Here we are again, just in time to see Kovalainen coming in the pits

Heidfeld and Schumacher both in the points at the moment

The fight between Coulthard and Lotterer goes on

Raikkonen in the lead, but he has to pit again

Lotterer now comes in for his final stop

Followed by Button, Heidfeld and Villeneuve

Button back out in 8th, ahead of the lapped Vettel

Schumacher on the way to his crew

Verstappen running in 11th, a bad race for the winner of the Bahrain GP

Raikkonen now in the pits. Will he be able to keep his lead?

There's Coulthard, and the graphics show us that he's in 2nd

That means Raikkonen has kept the lead

Webber and Ralf Schumacher in for their final stops

Montoya meanwhile back in the points

Montagny in the pits

Everyone now has done their stops, so here are the current standings

Button with the last point at the moment, but Heidfeld is right behind him

And he overtakes him going into turn 1

Schumacher in 7th, after starting from 21st

11laps to go for Raikkonen, who is about to lap Verstappen

Button seems to have a bad set of tyres, Frentzen now has closed up to him

Glock running in 14th

Coulthard in 2nd, behind him Kubica in 3rd

It seems that Kubica is slowly getting closer

da Matta attacks Villeneuve for 12th

but the Canadian stays ahead

Villeneuve trying his best to keep the Toyota behind him

Heidfeld in 8th, I guess he didn't expect that after the qualifying

da Matta now too late on the brakes, he bumps into Villeneuve

who runs wide

and drops back to 13th

Glock is off the track!

He runs wide at the same place as at the beginning of the race

That drops him back to 16th place

Schumacher getting closer to Montoya, but he probably won't be able to catch him in the remaining time

Last lap now for Kimi Raikkonen

And he wins the Australian GP!

Second place for David Coulthard

Kubica in third completes the podium

Alonso finishes in 4th

5th place for Lotterer

Montoya crosses the line in 6th

Michael Schumacher in 7th after a great race

and the last point goes to Heidfeld in 8th

Thanks everyone for watching! Full results will follow very soon.

DOTD: Michael Schumacher, after only starting from 21st he stayed out of trouble for the whole race, fought his way through the field and got 7th place and also the 3rd fastest laptime.

Honda
**** **** ****! What in the world happened? First R.Schumacher deciding it'd be smart to eliminate Bas, then the incident while lapping Vettel......
Toyota

Another bad race for us,but looking at the overall pace the car seems quick, just need to stop getting involved in these incidents :)
