Sauber announce Arden International Link

Sauber boss Chris Copeman today announced that his team had signed a contract with fledgling GP2 outfit Arden international. As part of the deal Arden International will take on the Sauber name and act as the sister team to the F1 outfit. Copeman said that the deal was done to help develop young driver talent and have a sure fire way of testing new and upcoming drivers before putting them into the pressure cooker of Formula 1. It is believed that as part of the deal Sauber will have some say over driver recruitment and a first refusal on any Arden/Sauber drivers should anyone else come in for them.

Ah I've only just seen this post ;)

For this season I've always just worked out the time difference between each teams drivers regardless of whether or not the test driver is ahead of the regular driver or vice versa.

2004 French Grand Prix Race Day

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the 2004 French Grand Prix coming to you from the Magny Cours circuit. Yesterday's qualifying session saw Toyota's Cristiano Da Matta take pole ahead of the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher. Can the Brazilian go on to win the race? Let find out.

5 lights on

And the French Grand Prix is underway

Da Matta keeps the lead but Rubens Barrichello has managed to find a way past Michael Schumacher for 2nd.

Mark Webber has gained a place, he is now in 7th.

Da Matta is wide!

And Rubens Barrichello takes the lead

Barrichello sets the fastest lap of the race

But it's then beaten by Lotterer

Sauber's Timo Glock gets a run at Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella

He goes for the inside

However, he can't make it stick

Sauber will be annoyed with Renault. Both their drivers are being help up by Reno's.

Coulthard locks up and Heidfeld is through on the inside

Now Raikkonen is stuck behind Coulthard. Jenson Button dives down the inside of Lotterer

And he's through

Raikkonen is still stuck behind Coulthard.

4 laps later he pits as a result.

Allan McNish pits in the Jaguar.

Whoa! It looks like Allan McNish has gone off. He obviously hadn't got his tyres up to temperature.

He rejoins at the back of the field.

The Jaguar driver must have those tyres up to temperature, he sets the fastest lap.

The race leader comes in for his stop.

The Arrows of Jarno Trulli is off the track.

McNish runs into the back of Lotterer. Both cars are off the track.

Lotterer quickly recovers his Jordan.

McNish rejoins at the back of the field.

Unbelievable! Da Matta has jumped Barrichello in the pits.

Barrichello gets an overtaking attempt all wrong and hits the back of Da Matta.

The contact forces the Toyota driver wide and he loses the lead.

Da Matta will be fuming inside that cockpit.

Da Matta is attacking Barrichello. Can he take the lead back?

In a carbon copy of what Rubens did to Cristiano, the Williams driver is forced wide.

Da Matta leads once more.

Alonso has a run on De La Rosa

But Alonso gets the overtaking attempt all wrong and goes into the side of the Minardi.

Anthony Davidson takes full advantage and goes past the 2 of them.

Hang on.....That's Cristiano Da Matta bouncing through the gravel.

The Brazilian rejoins in last place. What a costly mistake.

McNish dives down the inside of Trulli.

The top 6 at half distance

Michael Schumacher is off the track.

And he hits Jacques Villeneuve as he returns to the track. That's race over for the German.

Villeneuve is out of the race too

David Coulthard is holding up Nick Heidfeld again

Glock hits the back of Button whilst trying to pass the Brit.

And Glock is through into 10th after sending Button wide.

Jos Verstappen sets the fastest lap in the Ferrari

Coulthard gets it all wrong at the final chicane

And Heidfeld is through

The top six with 30 laps remaining

Allan McNish sets another fastest lap.

He's pushing his car to the limit out there.

The race leaders pits for the second time.

Bas Leinders lines up Coulthard for an overtake.

Coulthard goes to the inside but the young BAR driver simply drives clean round the outside. Brilliant!

All that hardwork is then ruined as he takes a trip through the gravel.

He rejoins at the back.

Looks like someone's engine has decided to call it a day.

It's the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella.

A quick look at the standings with 13 laps remaining.

The race leader is slowing down!!

He's pulling off!!

Oh my word! Barrichello is out of the race! He would have won the race.

Barrichello's retirement means that Jaguar's Mark Webber takes the lead with Montoya right behind him.

Lotterer, who was in a points position, is let down by his Jordan.

An engine problem ends his race.

Lets look at the order with 5 laps to go.

Mark Webber starts the last lap in the lead.

And he holds on to win the French Grand Prix!

Montoya comes home second.

Verstappen is third.

Damnit! Barrichello out, and then Schumacher has to be DNF as well!! With Montoya 2nd and Jos 3rd we lost points instead of gained!

If you are racing, keep on racing and get some points!

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!!!!!!!!! Great win by Mark this is a great day for the team. So disappointed with Allen, that could have easily been a 1-2.

It's unfortunate that Fisichella's engine blew up. We are happy that Coulthard finished in a point scoring position.
Great recovery drive by Zonta. Im really glad ive got him for next season. Trulli doesnt do much again.
Timo Glock Signs for Arrows
Timo Glock will be leaving Sauber at the end of the season to take up a position at the Arrows team, completing the teams 2005 driver lineup. The young German did receive interest from other teams but none could top the Arrows bid of £6m.

A Further (possible) Change for 2005
With money now also coming in from the GP2 series that can be used for both testing and buying drivers, engines, etc. I am seriously considering scrapping the testing 'budget concept' as I feel that having another budget of GP2 money will simply complicate the matter more and make it harder to keep track of, also by having a single budget it will force managers to make a serious choice between continuing development on the current car, or abandoning it to have more money for next season (also to make the choice slightly harder the price for mid-season testing may well go up) . Therefore the current plan for 2005 is for each team to have a single budget made up of their base budgets, whatever they have left over from this season from both their main and testing budgets and any dosh from the GP2 teams, however the changes could come in now if you guys want so that your main, testing and GP2 dosh is combined and you can spend it on whatever you want, although I can see that this could be quite controversial considering we are quite far into contract negociations.

Mid-Season Test Session Coming Up
The next mid-season test session will be taking at the Silverstone Circuit also as far as I am concerned, seeing as the GP2 teams have already paid their money, the managers who have loaned out test drivers to the GP2 series may spend the money they received to attend this test session, of course this is open for discussion.

Arrows Statement

We here at Arrows are thrilled to have signed Timo Glock, Ricardo Zonta and Gary Paffett for next season. We feel we have the experience and the enthusiasm to get more points next season. Timo Glock signs from Sauber where he has driven well we think and thats why we splashed the cash on him. Zonta was rewarded for a brilliant drive at silverstone where he picked up his and the teams first points this season. It was his first drive since returning and we feel he deserved that new contract. Gary Paffett is a bright talent for F1 and we look forward to working with him. Next season he will be in GP2 to gain some experience before we decide to give him a drive or not the season after. We would like to thank Trulli and Wilson for their hard work and putting in all the effort. We hope they leave with some good results and keep on pushing to try and get a drive for next season.
Well chuffed with a double points finish. Sad to see Timo go but good luck to him. Sauber will be attending the test at Silverstone please. Focussing on pace.

Mclaren Mercedes Statement

Extremely happy with the race at Magny Cours. It was great to see Jenson Button get points especially after the underhand tactics of Timo Glock. Fernando also came close to the points which is really encouraging.

Mclaren will be attending the Silverstone test session and will be focusing on pace.

Jaguar will attend the test session and focus on pace.

Jordan Statement

Again a good race from Kimi with 5th place, and André also did very well, we feel really sorry for him cause he would have get his first points if the engine didn't blow up.

Jordan will attend the test-session with Raikkonen and Lotterer, focusing on pace.

About the budget discussion, I would suggest following rules:
1. The money the teams get for loaning out drivers and that they spend for sister contracts will be added or subtracted to the 2005 budget,
the remaining 2004 budgets stay the same (as the drivers that are already loan out have also be contracted using the 2005 budget).
2. For 2005 every team has a base budget plus a bonus which is depending on the final 2004 WCC standing. This budget will be used
for contracting drivers, buying engines and brakes. The remaining money then can be used for testing or GP2 deals.
Maybe the remaining 2004 budget should not be added to this because this could make the bigger teams even more powerful.

@mclarenaustralia: I think using this budgets would make the gap between the teams too big. With the current situation, it's easier for the
smaller teams to score some points (they're even able to win races!) and to contract better drivers as they can partially keep up with the offers
of for example Ferrari or Williams.
