Malaysian Grand Prix Race BroadcastHello and welcome to coverage of the Malaysian Grand Prix live from the Sepang circuit just outside Kuala Lumpur. In yesterdays qualifying session we saw Juan Pablo Montoya put McLaren back on pole for the first time since the 2003 season and no doubt he’ll be looking to carry his advantage through to the race, however he has last week’s winner Fernando Alonso just behind him in the Ferrari whose incredible pace in the last race will keep him and his fans optimistic about seeing another Ferrari victory today. Anyway with five lights on the race is about to begin…
And we’re away!
And Montoya manages to hold off Alonso at turn 1 and is still in first place
Whilst team mate Vettel has dropped back behind Massa
And now Lotterer is having a look…
But they touch! And Vettel spins!
And Webber also gets involved after attempting to overtake Ralf Schumacher at the same corner!
The pair rejoin right at the back of the field
Meanwhile towards the front the other Schumacher has managed to get past Raikkonen
Massa is now looking for a way past his team mate going into the final hairpin
And he throws it up the inside…
And takes the position!
But Alonso is looking to come straight back at him!
And he retakes 2nd place!
At this early stage of the race Montoya looks to have the upper hand on the rest of the field
And Glock’s spun!
It appears that the pressure from Vettel was a little too much for Glock to handle as he completely misses his braking point at turn 7
He rejoins last
And now Fisichella’s off as well!
He made the exact same mistake as Glock, just further round the lap
And that does not look at all good for Webber…
And he wisely pulls of the track with a oil leak
Two DNFs in two races, not the start to the season he or his team was hoping for…
Meanwhile the two Minardis’ are squabbling over 18th
And Klien demotes Davidson to 19th in the final corner!
But Davidson is looking to come straight back through…
But he doesn’t have enough straight line speed
Da Matta is being held up badly behind the Arrows of Zonta
And indeed a train is beginning to form beind the Brazilians
But at the back of it Vettel is carry on his comeback by having a look at Buttons’ 15th place…
And he makes it easily
Meanwhile at the head of the train Da Matta is alongside Zonta…
And he to makes it through and gains the position
Montoya is the first driver to pit as he comes in from the lead
As does Massa, Schumacher, Sato and Barrichello to name a few
Montoya is back out in 11th whilst the rest emerge with Massa in 15th, Sato 16th, Barrichello 18th but Schumacher drops back to 19th after a poor stop
It looks as though Montoya is a little too eager to get past Heidfeld as he runs into the back of the Sauber at turn 3
But luckily both escape unharmed
But here he comes again down the penultimate straight…
And he easily overtakes Heidfeld
Lotterer and Kubica are the next in
They rejoin in 10th and 11th
And that’s Vettel pulling of the track!
And he’s forced to retire with a transmission failure!
Next into the pitlane is Ralf Schumacher
He rejoins 10th ahead of Massa who has lost a lot of places during this first phase of pitstops
And as Raikkonen and Villenueve pit Davidson and Glock find themselves in 3rd and 6th, although the pair are yet to stop.
Sato has run wide at turn 2
Which allows Barrichello to drive clean around the outside of the BAR and also puts Schumacher on his tail
But Schumacher can’t take advantage
Now we have a four way fight for 4th place going into turn 9
And Villenueve tags the back of Raikkonen!
They all keep their cars pointing in the right direction but it allows Glock to retake 6th from Villenueve
Finally Alonso is in from the lead, has he done enough to beat Montoya…
The answer is… no! as Montoya comfortably rejoins ahead of the Ferrari driver
Meanwhile Davidson and Glock are also in, might these three be attempting a two stopper today…
And as suspected Massa has lost out badly in the stops and is back in 8th place after having been 3rd
Anyway with all the first round of pitstops finally over it’s time for some standings
That’s Da Matta off in the gravel!
He manages to keep his car going but he’s now down in 19th
Meanwhile several laps later we finally have some action as Massa is tries to make a move on Ralf
And they’re still side by side…
But Massa is able to get on the power earlier to take the position
However he has to make his second stop immediately afterwards
And Barrichello and Ralf have followed him into the pits…
And Schumacher loses out to Barrichello as well!
Montoya and Lotterer are in now as well
But on the other side of the track we Coulthard in the gravel!
It’s a throttle problem that ends his race
Meanwhile Montoya has emerged in 5th, right behind Schumacher in the Williams
Whilst Lotterer is out in 6th
Luckily for Montoya, Schumacher pits straight away and rejoins 10th
Raikkonen and Kubica are the next of the front runners in
They rejoin 4th and 6th
And Davidson has managed to crawl back into 8th due to the fact that he hasn’t pitted for a second time yet
But Massa makes light work of the Minardi
But Davidson is looking to come straight back past
And he does! Very cheeky from the Brit
Now Schumacher is looking to pass Barrichello in the hairpin…
And even though he does Barrichello will get a run on him down the main straight
And makes it work
Alonso is in for what looks to be his final stop
Which gives Montoya the lead, but can he build up a big enough gap to stay ahead after his final stop?
Meanwhile Lotterer has also passed Alonso!
Barrichello is in the pits very soon after his 2nd stop…
And the Brazilian appears to have suffered a brake problem! Luckily he does manage to get back out, but any hope of points is now gone
Davidson is now also in for his final stop
He’s back out in 14th, if things go his way today he might be in with a shout of a point or two..
And Raikkonen has passed Alonso!
In the end it was a relatively simple pass for the Finn
And that’s Barrichello attempting to drift
He stays 17th...
Lotterer is the first of the front three to pit for a third time
He rejoins 7th
And Raikkonen is in the next lap as he rejoins in 8th
And now here’s Montoya, has he done enough to stay ahead of Alonso?
No! Alonso manages to just beat Montoya out of the pits! Can he keep hold of the lead for the final 13 laps?
Meanwhile it looks as though Button is in trouble…
A puncture spells the end for the Brit
Montoya has already caught up to Alonso, it surely is only a matter of time as he’s been much quicker than the Ferrari all race…
Villenueve and Kubica are now in the pits
Which, seeing as he’s just been overtaken, puts Davidson in 9th, could this be the day Minardi score some points in F1 again…
And Montoya and Alonso are side by side down the back straight!
And he’s through! But Alonso’s coming back at him!
And he retakes the lead! At this rate we should be on for a fantastic finale
But wait! What’s this!?!
Montoya is out of the race!!! A double DNF for McLaren!
And whilst McLaren are left to mourn what might have been Minardi will be ecstatic as that puts their man in the points, all he has to do is hold off Kubica…
No doubt that’ll leave Ferrari feeling pretty smug, it looked very unlikely that Alonso had to pace to keep Montoya at bay
But there is soon disappointment at Minardi as Kubica passes Davidson for 8th, but after what has just happened who knows what will happen next…
And in all that excitement it seems as we’ve forgotten about updating the standings
Lotterer is on course for his first F1 podium after having that chance at Melbourne cruelly snatched away from him…
AND ALONSO’S ON FIRE! HE’S OUT OF THE RACE!!!
I doubt Ferrari will be feeling quite so smug now…
But that means, from absolutely no where, Andre Lotterer is just 4 laps away from winning his first F1 race and leading home a Jordan one two… who would’ve seen that coming 10 laps ago…
Any hope of points at Minardi is slowly slipping away as Davidson falls victim to Sato…
And then they have gone completely when he spins just a few corners later
Lotterer is just two laps away from victory…
But wait a minute… he’s pitting?
He is! Lotterer has suffered a brake failure just as he was about to start the final lap!!!
And quite literally out of nowhere, Kimi Raikkonen finds himself leading the grand prix on the final lap! Incredible!
Lotterer meanwhile rejoins 5th, that’s twice in two races a podium has been taken away from him
And now Raikkonen is approaching the final hairpin for what will be the final time…
And Kimi Raikkonen wins the Malaysian Grand Prix! He only led one lap of the race, but he did so when it mattered! What an incredible few laps we have just witnessed…
Villenueve brings his Williams home 2nd
Whilst Massa brings his Ferrari home 3rd
And Lotterer, who was just one lap from a quite incredible victory, finishes in 5th place
Full results to follow…
