Space, The Final Frontier.

The asteroid Vesta (mean diameter 530km) is in the southern hemisphere sky, I saw it last night approx 8.30pm from the Byron Bay area unaided. Alt 40, Az 90. Just a fraction south of the eastern cardinal point, climbing vertically. Magnitude is 5.48 so pretty bright, looks like a slow moving satellite. I'll post a Stellarium pic later today.

Jesus!.. i wonder what would happen if that thing decides to poke us... probably modifies the orbit..

it would alter our orbit a bit for sure, but not that much. vesta's mass is about 1/27000 of earth's mass (rough estimation) so we should be okay. the biggest problem would be the huge amount of dust caused by the impact which would change our climate quite drastically.

best explanation i heard today: they let undergrads near the experiment :P

we (we=physics nerds) already know that there are problems with relativity. eg it doesn't work on the quantum level. if these findings turn out to be true it would be awesome but for sure we wouldn't have to rewrite anything. just because some neutrinos decided to go faster than light gps devices (which depend on the correctness of relativity) won't stop working.
it would be more or less just another exception where relativity does not work. it came unexpected, though. the scientists who work in this field won't be sad, as there's something new to discover and new ideas will be needed. plus they'll get a lot of funding
the measured deviation was afaik only about 60/1000000 of the speed of light, so this is a very small effect. and in case anyone is interested: here's a preprint version of the corresponding publication: [static.arxiv.org]

some news on the faster than light neutrinos (in case you missed it): the people at cern discovered two issues with their experiment. one could have led to an underestimation of the neutrino speed while the other could be responsible for an overestimation. they'll do some more tests to quantify the influence of the problems they discovered.
