Can someone explain to me exactly why the Hakkinen / MS move was so good?

You get one guy, in a better car, getting a slipstream and diving up the inside of a slower car, at a well-known overtaking spot. Just because there was another car involved, and they each went opposite sides of it, does not make it a good overtaking move.

That type of move backfired spectacularly on me yesterday. The backmarker decided to dive out of the way of the first leader into my path.

So it isn't quite that easy ;) you have to trust the backmarker.

It was very risky move and Schumacher gave him a big chop when he tried to do it the first time.

Compared to other moves mentioned on this thread though, like Mansell/Senna ('91) or Mansell/Piquet ('87) or even Villeneuve/Schumacher ('96), Hakkinen's move seems pretty ordinary, and I don't see why people can class it ahead of these moves.

It's mainly because hakkinen is very overrated and there are a lot of hakkinen fanboys about.

mikas move looked better due to the 3rd car had it been must ms and mika it would have been a normal move into that corner thats been done 100 times before.

the mansell senna one 1991 was total trust of both drivers 1 more inch both cars are flipped that took pure guts.

watch the 1st few laps of canada senna went from 7th to 3rd with some stunning moves as well but these done get mentioned.

for me the best move ever was mansell on berger mexico 1990

overrated ? I would say he is underrated .And his overtake is the best that I have seen since I have followed F1 (from 1993) .

Well Locke, in all those moves you've mentioned, the driver who overtakes has the better car or better tyres. I wouldn't say that Hakkinens move was better than those you've listed, just a well executed and brave move imo.

Mika's move was amazing because had Zonta moved a little bit to the right Mika would have an horrific crash. That's why it was amazing.

Then you should be crediting zonta then and not mika.

Credit Zonta for Mika making a pass?

I'll credit the pit wall for DC hitting it then

Lol Dave! Having just watched a clip of the move again another thing i noted was that Mika was on the dirty part of the track when he overtook both zonta and MS.

that's what i said, had Zonta soiled his pants at seeing MS about to lap him, and not known there were 2 cars, he might have swept right across the track to the right, and blocked (or crashed into) Mika.

if they had done the same thing 100 times, i reckon at least 90 of them would have ended in an accident between Zonta and Mika.

remove Zonta and it would have been an ordinary pass.

Mika was massively faster than MS at that point, he fell back the lap before when he was blocked, then caught him up again and passed him the next lap.

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael

Mansell on Berger Mexico 1990 around the outside of the famous Peraltada corner.

Mansell on Senna 89 Hungarian GP. Was pure instinct.

ah well , if you fail to see everyones point about that move , then nevermind , are you a Schumi fan who hated Mika ? eheh

the best move I think , it has to be Villeneuve on Schumi ( as far as I remember ) although I liked the Raikkonen on Fisi at Japan

it isn't tbh , I loved when I saw , not because everyone told it was a very good move.

well , care to say why you disagree ?

PS . everyone has the habit to put some words on capitals , why is it ? " THE " " IS " "NOT " etc ...

I would say Alonso's overtake on Michael at Japan is overrated not Kimi's....
