FIFA 99 was very fun and had a more decent Flamengo but the leap of 98 to 97 was massive. 99 was just a slight polish over 98, but it had Bergkamp on the cover at least and that was the year I started sort of supporting Arsenal :P.

I think I do remember playing a demo of that, what really annoyed me about that game was the keepers, they were way too easy to beat :( Also was that the game where the Keepers had no gloves? ;)

Haha, I can't remember that so I won't say anything about gloves :P. Remember FIFA 2000? It had Robbie Williams' intro song and it was an attempt of more progression to the series but still was feeling a bit too "scripted". Definitely had a more loose look but in the end the gameplay was still restricting. It did have classic teams though, and a pleasant graphical update.

Ian, if you thought those goalies were easy to beat, try playing FIFA 2001 and NOT scoring on a bicycle/volley kick if you cross the ball into the box ;).

ps: I think I'm gonna install 98-01 at home because of this thread, damn you guys ;)

Lol
How bad were the keepers on WC 98?
Every CPU goal was scored by them walking up to your keeper and trickling it into the bottom corner ;)

I remember trying to see how many volley goals I could score from the edge of the box with Klinsmann in a single game :P. Also, it was the first game where you could dive!

And indoor football!!!!!!!
Honestly, why don't PES or FIFA put five a side in their games?

Now that was genius!! I used to love indoor matches! :D I'm confused why they removed that too, or did they just replace it with that stupid FIFA Street?

There was indoor in FIFA 97, I don't know why they stopped it either. There's so much they could explore, especially futsal!

Nice post, I especially like the ending screens and music.
Lots of retro games have really nice custom made soundtracks to listen to.
Here's one of my favourites, the Adidas Power Soccer 97 theme.

The museum mode theme from PES 4 is one of my favourites as well.

Nowadays in football games though you have to endure the likes of Duffy and The Kaiser Chiefs :(

Adidas Power Soccer!!!!

I remember back in the mid-late 90s where I'd get videogame magazines every month and just drool looking at the level they had reached. I remember trying to analyze every footy game from the images and anything I could find! However being in Brazil, we had no PSX except for imports and the games were also very hard to find, so I had to settle for Sega Saturn games that didn't cost an arm and leg (back in the day they'd cost about $40-50 dollars for us, or R$69 in local currency, such nice days... now it's at least R$99 for a PC game!). When I found Sega Worldwide Soccer I went beserk and played that even more than I had played FIFA 94 for the Mega Drive! To me the intro was so realistic and perfect (bar the goalpost being as thick as me) that I even took pictures of the tv screen when the player was lobbying the goalkeeper so I could have it somewhere :(.

ooo that one was a gem! The footy game I play is PES 2007 for the PS2 (with Adriano on the cover). I've created a few players, edited the boots, updated most transfers and tried to put reasonable line-ups for most altered sides and it's the only footy game I'll be playing until FIFA can compete with it, or until Konami sorts itself out and makes good next-gen PES (as well as getting more licenses)! What made me happy last night was that I went to double check the ratings I gave to the peeps I created and to my happy surprise I was actually more strict with the numbers than people from the PES Stats Database! :D

Aye aye, I went over this with Daniel Knott the other day. It's confusing to me because in Brazil we call it like the Japanese do, Winning Eleven (mine is WE10). Over there it's PES 1-6 or whatever, and in the US it became PES 2007, 2008, 2009... too many names ;). I remember buying PES 5 for PC when I was in Madrid in 2006, with Henry and Collina on the cover. Few months later I got the newest one for PS2 with Adriano, so PES 6. My last PES purchase, got seriusly let down by the licensing in the next versions and the poor level of the next gen ones :(.

One more thing... Wasn't Goal Storm '97 basically WE 1?

I have PES 1,2,3,4 and 6, all for PS2.

And I'm hooked on PES 1, which I bought for 50p ;)
I find PES2 is too fast/easy, PES 3 and 4 are ruined by the terrible keeper dive animations, and on PES 6 players in smaller teams play like drunkards who have never kicked a ball, and are really really slow.
Also what annoys me in PES 6 is you can dribble past a player, leave him on his backside, and then a second later he has caught up and is holding your shirt :(.

I must have played well over a thousand matches on PES 1 on five star difficulty in the couple of years since I have had it ;). In my last season I played a master league with Monaco, and in that I had a six game goal drought, a 4-4 draw, a 5-2 defeat at the bottom team Palestora ;) and in the end lost out to Bordeaux in the promotion race by one goal on goal difference :(
The AI is direct and able, and makes the games really interesting, whereas in the latest PES games I have played, you can let the likes of Chievo and Siena have all the chances and crosses in the world, knowing they are going to fluff them all.

They don't make football games like they used to any more :(

I find they simply overrate too many guys. Just because a guy plays outside of an European powerhouse doesn't mean he can't run faster than Messi, be more technical than Gerrard and so on. There's a lot of bad research, at least they get people's feet usage properly unlike FIFA ;), and most players look like themselves if their faces are preset.

What bothers me most in PES 6/2007 is when you shoot, the directions the ball may take. It's pretty much too wide or too close to the middle, and goalies are too good close up but cannot reach certain types of shot. The AI could be smarter too not only against us but also our COM teammates. I've always said we'd have a brilliant game if we matched the feel of recent PES with the gameplay of International Superstar Soccer 98. When playing with friends many times I'd switch to the goalie and make saves or play more aggressively to prevent shots and so on! Guess what though? You can't even dive with the goalie in the recent PES games :(.

Fifa 2004 was actually an awesome game! I loved the step up in graphics from 2003 and also the first time you could be lower league clubs.

I've gone off PES. I find that I can never find the goal with any player...so I went back to FIFA.

:)
