GP4 Central - Let's go hotlapping!

Hotlaps Season 5
It's been away for a while, but the GP4 Central hotlapping competition is back today.

The competition is a casual, offline hotlapping series open to all GP4 players. It's super easy to participate, so head over to www.gp4central.com and join us.

Follows the real F1 season
Using the GP4 Central 2018 Mod, pre-season testing starts today at Barcelona, with one more testing event scheduled before the start of the season. Then we will follow the real F1 circus over the first 8 rounds of the real season from Melbourne to Paul Ricard.

No penalties
There are no performance-leveling penalties this season. We're keeping it simple and straight-forward; just all-out hotlapping over 10 rounds in the fastest ever GP4 Central cars!

You've signed for every team...
However, I have introduced one new rule which should spice up the competition a bit - competitors may only use each team car once during the season. So you can't just hop into a Mercedes every round, you'll have to use all the cars if you compete in all rounds! You'll need to plan your strategy across the season, and think about which cars will best suit each track. Use the 2018 Form Guide to help you decide.

Bernie's Medals
Mr Eccelstone had some pretty awful ideas during his time in charge of real F1, but I actually thought his proposed medal system was a good one, so we're going to use it instead of awarding traditional points this season.

Bring your own .wad
One other idea I will be trialing this season is the "bring your own .wad" concept.

The .wad file is the track's graphical environment, and (by far) the largest file for each track. During Season 5, participants will be provided all the files they need for each track, but sometimes I'll leave out the .wad, and instead recommend where to find it elsewhere. This will allow me to create track packs of minimal size and keep them up-to-date more easily. We'll see if the concept works during the season.

The .wad file for Pre-Season Testing #1 at Barcelona 2011 can be found at F1 Virtual's download page.

Any modern (post-2007) .wad file should work fine.

Welcome to the competition J.L.M. :)

Pretty quiet out here in Barcelona so far this week...

I have added a feature where if you hover over the car image on the leaderboard it will show you the basic setup info that driver used. Useful?

I am attempting to give this a go - but upon trying to upload a saved hotlap, i get the message "Invalid Entry: Track checksum is not correct. Check your track files." Not sure what is going on there, as i have downloaded the 2011 beta version of Barcelona from the link provided..... Put in a competitive lap time too....

I have had another attempt at getting a lap posted for this comp, AFTER downloading your linked track. Added a 2011 wad to the track, installed and ran through TSM then loaded the carset in GP4. Set a very, very good lap time, but still get the checksum error.
No idea what is wrong, so.... i probably give up. Shame really, as i was 1.4 secs in front with my lap time....

Is it possible you can send me:

1) your track.set file
2) a screenshot of the folder the Barcelona track is in?

installed and ran through TSM

There's the problem - we do not use TSM, we use GPxTrack to install tracks:

Custom tracks should be installed using GPxTrack.

Sorry, I know some people prefer TSM but we have to keep it consistent for all participants, so GPxTrack is the mandatory method to load the tracks.

Aaaaaah, well there we go.
I just automatically assumed that if the carset was loaded via a CSM set as provided on the website, it would be an automatic use of TSM to load tracks. Just makes perfect sense....
Oh well, that may be me out then....Has taken me years to get a good stable reliable GP4 installation running the CSM/TSM combination so i ain't messing with it!

I know where you're coming from, but since GPxPatch v4.0 I believe that GPxTrack became the superior method to load tracks. That's why it's the only method I preach :)

24 hours left at our first test session - some good times on the board so far although I'm sure there's some sandbagging going on :) It is only testing... Edit: Scrap that - those latest laps are fast!

Comparison to real-life times here: 2018 Spanish Grand Prix qualifying times.

Well done everyone and thank you for participating in the first test of Season 5, it has been useful to test the system and given me some good feedback to tune the performance of the mod - we were maybe slightly too fast compared to real-life 2018 so I'll work on that.

Now you'll need to get on a plane and head to Austin, Texas for our 2nd test session at Circuit of the Americas which starts on Friday. Then we'll join the real F1 circus and follow them for the first 8 rounds of the championship from Melbourne to Paul Ricard.

See you at COTA (Y)

Test session #2 is now open. I have made some adjustments in the CSM mod to calibrate the performance closer to 2018, so please download both the track AND the new mod before starting your hotlap.

Tom, just tried uploading a lap done in a Williams, but got an error about using the same car as a previous event (McLaren).
Cheers
