GP2 Manager - 2005: Silverstone Free Practice & Qualification Results PG36 - Searching for a new manager!

Posted by Reve-san
I like the fact that this is a simple development series, where you experience the demands of being involved in a series without having as much to think about as the main F1 series.
I have to admit, it is frustrating when you go from top 3 to back of the grid between races (or even sessions), but that's because the performance differences are so small. At least it gives more teams the opportunity to score points and challenge for wins.

Also agree with pycku that any changes should be made for 2007, to give us a little more time to consider the implications and plan accordingly.

Reve-san, I want you to know how much we appreciate your thoughts and efforts in running this series and giving us the opportunity to use this fantastic game and community.

Okay, seems like I misunderstood some posts lately. And maybe, just maybe, I just love calculating and planning way too much ;)

If you don´t want any of this to happen then it won´t, in the end I am only the runner of the series.

Your reasons sound logical, so let´s delay this discussion to the end of the season, shall we? After all there´s still more than enough spare time, even though I am planning some kind of Asia Series again... Oh and I forgot to mention: Your engine will be rebranded as Lotus from Magny Cours onwards :) (even though I forgot to do it for the 2nd race again... but after that it will always be DSR Lotus :) )

Thanks, that means a lot to me :)

Magny-Cours Feature Race Coverage
Welcome everybody, to todays Feature Race here in France. After a break for one week I am glad to be back at the grid and I hope you are as well. It´s a sunny day and I don´t think there´ll be rain anywhen soon. Let´s see if iSport International can keep up their strong performance of free practice and qualifying and win important points in the battle for the driver and team championship, or not. But let´s not waste too much time - let us get started!

All five lights are on. The race will start in a few moments.

And we´re off!

Kamui Kobayashi battles Giorgio Pantano right away, Paffett lost a bit time!

It seems like Pantano can stay in front.

Yes, he can. But behind Paffett, Rosberg overtook Franck Montagny.

And now Kobayashi has to defend himself against Paffett!

Will he get through?

No, he didn´t, leaving him in strike distance to Nico Rosberg.

Piquet braking a bit wrong now.

Oh... That looks more dangerous than I thought it would be.

And Carroll gets off the track!

This could be close!

Luckily noone touched. Carroll is still loosing positions.

Prémat is through and Wurz wants to do the same.

But it seems like Carroll can at least secure the 11th place.

And he does, while Giorgio Pantano is driving the fastest first lap - what a wonder.

Well then, let´s see the standings after this first round.

López breaking a bit wrong I think.

A bit too much - he runs wide.

And looses a place - he is last now.

Meanwhile 2nd placed Kamui Kobayashi drives a fastest lap.

And one lap later Giorgio Pantano drives a new fastest lap.

Roberg Doornbos challenges Hernandez for 14th.

Ouh, Hernandez closed the door way too late!

Again nothing big happened, except loosing some time.

Gene already won 4 positions and seems to challenge Yuji Ide for 7th now.

Doesn´t seem like he will get through.

And he doesn´t.

Carroll is now back in strike distance to the second DSR Lotus driver Prémat.

Prémat now has to drive a defensive line.

And he succeeds, Carroll has no chance to try an overtake - But Lyons had!

Lyons got through, as did Wurz! It seems like Vilander is having some problems.

He already fell back to 19th.

But he manages to get into the pits. At least some good news for him.

Carroll is still trying to overtake Prémat.

But he is not getting through.

Marc Gene now driving the fastest lap.

And Pantano seems to have lost a lot of time!

And now Toni Vilander drives the new fastest lap. Fresh tyres and noone in front are two important factors if you want to drive fast.

Meanwhile Pantano managed to enlarge his lead again.

Carroll again challenging Prémat.

But Prémat is still able to fight him off.

Gary Paffett is getting a bit closer to Kobayashi.

30 laps to go - let´s have a look at the standings again.

And Prémat drives a new fastest lap. Thats a bit of a surprise.

Paffett brakes wrong!

This has costed him about half a second.

24 laps to go - Marc Gene opens the pit-stop phase.

And... Paffett is second, Kobayashi leading! But Pantano didn´t pit, did he?

No! Pantano is driving off track! That´s just horrible for the 26 years old italian driver.

He is out - it´s always hitting the wrong ones.

Now Paffett is getting into the pits from 2nd place.

Rosberg and Hernandez came in as well.

And Paffett is driving on again.

But what´s that?! Rosberg overtook Paffett!

Paffett lost a position to Nico Rosberg! (flying tyres - no good omen)

The Super Nova Crew has been 0.5 seconds faster than the iSport crew.

Meanwhile Gene is trying to overtake Montagny.

But he cannot get through.

Now leading man Kamui Kobayashi comes in.

But Kobayashi has to wait, as Richard Lyons is passing him at the worst time possible!

Kobayashi can finally drive out - Will he stay in front of Rosberg?

11.9 seconds...

But it seems like the gap has been to big, Rosberg is still 6th.

While Paffett is 8th! He lost a position to Nelson Piquet as well!

Yuji Ide is leading the grid, but only until he gets in.

Ryan Sharp now overtaking... Kobayashi?

No, Kobayashi stays in front.

And the young finn Heikki Kovalainen got 2nd for now.

While Yuji Ide pits.

And Kovalainen pits as well.

This leads to Kobayashi taking the lead again - but this time in front of Nico Rosberg.

And the ART Williams crew has been really fast, as Ide is already coming out again!

Where will he land?

Right next to Piquet! That means Gary Paffett might fall back another position!

Yuji Ide gets 3rd! ART Williams used an awesome strategy!

But Ide is not out of trouble yet, as Piquet and Paffett are really close.

Oh, whats that?! Piquet slides, this will be dangerous!

Paffett can´t avoid a contact!

He is off track!

Piquet is off track as well, and Montagny and Gene are immediately making profit of it!

Well at least Montagny does. Gene is trying it.

Well Gene can´t profit of this situation. Still, very poor for Paffett, who was 2nd some laps ago.

Back to Kamui Kobayashi, who is driving a very proper race.

Well then, everyone pitted once, let´s have a look at the standings again.

Oh, yes, I forgot about Vilander. He hadn´t done his planned pit-stop yet.

Well Rosberg is not looking to overtake Kobayashi - 3.3 seconds is just too much.

But Ide is not looking to overtake Rosberg as well.

And we have a first look at Pavlovic, who is driving his first GP2-Series race today.

Oh, Ide running a bit too wide here.

But he only looses some time.

Well then, we are in lap 30 - let´s see the standings again.

And Pavlovic challenges Monfardini for 17th.

But he cannot get through.

Rosberg will get 5 points more than Paffett if things stay like this.

Toni Vilander is still 21st.

In addition to beeing 3rd, Yuji Ide drives a new fastest lap.

And Montagny has been a bit too optimistic.

7 laps to go - let´s see the standings one more time.

Pavlovic is still trying to overtake Wirdheim. His manager stated that he plans to renew his contract if he shows a good performance.

He is still not getting through.

And lost some time with his last attack as well.

Kovalainen now challenges Bruni for 15th.

Wow, this is close!

But Bruni stays in P14.

And Kovalainen lost some time, just like Pavlovic did.

And what´s that? López is off track!

He is out! Seems like he had some technical errors.

2 more laps to go - Will we see some overtakings or is this it?

Well, Kovalainen is still not giving up!

While Kobayashi is driving a solid race in front.

He enters the last lap. This should be his win by now.

Only two last corners and he will win, after not having won since the Imola Sprint Race.

And Kamui Kobayashi wins the Magny Cours Feature Race!

Nico Rosberg finishes 2nd!

Yuji Ide finishes 3rd for the 3rd time in this season, but the first time in a Feature Race.

Franck Montagny finishes 5th, while Nelson Piquet Jr. finishes 6th and scores points after 3 races of no points for HiTech Racing.

Gary Paffett manages 6th and scores 5 points less then Rosberg. He´ll have to finish 2nd in the Sprint race with Rosberg scoring no points, if he wants to stay at least point equal with Rosberg.

Marc Gene finishes 7th and will start from 2nd position tomorrow - the position Paffett needs to finish.

Adam Carroll finishes 8th and gets another point for Super Nova Racing. Let´s see if he can win tomorrows sprint race.

DSR Lotus statement

Marc Gene seems to be at the top of his form. He won 5 places during the race and took home 2 valuable points. Unfortunately our strategy didn't work out as Gene lost a lot of time behind Montagny. Actually that ruined our chances of finishing on the podium.
On the contrary Alexander Premat didn't have one of his best races. He fall behind Gene after the start, then got to 9th position, but after the pitstops he fall to 10th agian. We know that his primary objective is to finish in top 10, but 10th is not enough to score points.
We are looking forward the sprint race, where Gene have good starting position and if he is lucky he can even give us our first victory. Our next goal is that both our cars score points in one and the same race, but this will be rather hard. However, we all know that Premat can be really fast and if this is his day, we will be very very happy.
Red Bull Racing Junior

Kept up with other drivers, and Pavlovic was on the pace straight away. We are gonna be around the tight midfield pack in the sprint race, hopefully we can start adding to our 9 points.

A fantastic reward for our hard work over the last few weeks and Kamui has once again shown his class by taking victory.
After the race Kamui said how happy he is with the team and enjoying every race and added that he hoped to add to his points tally from this weekend in the sprint race.
When asked if he felt he could claim the title, he said that there was still time to close the gap on the leaders.

Lopez didn't enjoy the race as much, and has asked the team if he can take some time out of the pressure cooker environment he finds himself in with Kamui out-performing him.
With this in mind from next race weekend our line up will be Kobayashi and Truyeler, whilst Lopez returns to Argentina where he hopes to regain his form in Formula Three Sudamericana.
Sauber GP2

One to forget
Heikki seems disconcentrated by the recent rumours about his move to Sauber F1, huh?
Magny Cours Sprint Race
Hello and welcome to todays rainy sprint race. Super Nova Racings driver Adam Carroll is starting from pole position today, right in front of DSR Lotus driver Marc Gene. Behind that is Gary Paffett, who started 3rd yesterday as well but due to a bad pit-stop and a little accident fell back to 6th. With Nico Rosberg starting from 7th today, Paffett might end up point equal again if he manages to get 2nd and Rosberg wouldn´t score points. And on this rainy day everything is possible. But let´s not talk, let´s see the race!

All five lights are on.

And the French Sprint Race is on its way!

Marc Gene was not able to overtake Carroll at the start and now has to defend himself against Paffett!

He manages to stay 2nd for now.

But Paffett is trying it again! He won´t give up that easily.

Oh my god.. Thousands of drivers trying to overtake on a wet track in such a difficult corner - This can´t end good.

But for Paffett it did!

Paffett overtook Marc Gene! Now he only needs to save this place for 31 laps - or he tries to overtake Adam Carroll as well and might lead the championship after this race.

And by the way: Thats what I was talking about just seconds ago.

Rosberg lost lots of positions! He was one the of loosers of this little incident. Makes it easier for Paffett.

This should be Yuji Ide between Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Doornbos.

And this is Richard Lyons close to Alexander Wurz who is 6th at the moment.

But Lyons falls back, Hernandez overtook him and Kobayashi is trying the same.

Kobayashi gets through as well.

Meanwhile Adam Carroll drives the logical fastest lap.

Kobayashi seems to be overtaking Hernandez.

At least he tried it.

And he fails.

But after winning the Feature Race, he won´t give up that easily.

Still it is kind of hard to overtake on this track. The conditions are not making things easier as well.

Well then, the first lap is done - let´s see the standings.

Adam Carroll now drives another fastest lap.

Just to have it beaten by Paffett who has now one point more than Rosberg!

So much for that. Lyons drove the fastest lap.

Montagny is challenging Gene, and Wurz challenges Piquet.

Montagny doesn´t get through.

And Piquet stays in front as well.

Paffett again drives a fastest lap, but there are too many laps to go to party already.

And as thought, someone else has beaten his lap: Heikki Kovalainen.

But at least he is still driving in 2nd position.

Wurz now trying to overtake Piquet again.

And this could be it.

But no, Wurz stays 6th behind Piquet.

Pantano already emerged to P15 after starting from last position. And he now challenges Sharp for 14th.

He might get through!

And... we´re getting cut off to Marc Gene on P3.

And we´re back, where Pantano is still in P15, but his overtake try has lost him lots of time.

His teammate instead is driving a good race. Not fast enough to get first but still good enough.

And now Montagny drives a new fastest lap.

While Wurz is trying it again.

But he fails again.

Well then, 24 more laps to go - some standings:

Let me correct myself: Paffett might be fast enough...

Oh, Kobayashi is running a bit wide here.

But he is only loosing some time, nothing too important.

But what´s that? Paffett is 4th!

He drives into the pits! Seems like Paffett is having a problem!

Well he get´s some fresh tyres but this won´t help him. He won´t have any chance to get into the points again which means Rosberg will surely lead the championship after this race.

This on the other side puts Marc Gene in 1st position and Franck Montagny in 2nd.

Pantano now challenging Wirdheim - seems like he lost a position off-screen.

And this will get interesting.

Pantano gets through, Lyons stays in front of both of them. Nico Rosberg got close as well.

And Paffett now runs a bit wide.

He looses a position to Lopez but is at least in front of Bruni.

Feature race leader Kobayashi is driving in 9th position. It will be hard for him if he still wants to score some points.

Paffett trying to gain back the 20th place now.

And he get´s through. He´ll at least have noone in front of him now.

Pantano now trys to overtake Sharp again - and it seems like he is getting through!

And he did, as did Wirdheim! But Lyons is now looking to overtake Wirdheim back.

But he is not getting through.

Ah, and let´s not forget about Wurz who is still challenging Piquet over and over again.

Hm. I don´t think he´ll make it.

And indeed.

This is not the ideal line Carroll is driving...

It really wasn´t, Carroll is off-track!

Adam Carroll is out of the race!

Paffett would be leading the race now, if it wasn´t for his problem some laps ago. Instead he has to challenge Vilander for 18th now.

And Paffett gets through. Next in line is Monfardini.

But let´s see who is leading now: Marc Gene of DSR Lotus in front of Franck Montagny of Campos Racing!

And Paffett drives a new fastest lap.

While Piquet is driving 12 seconds behind Montagny in 3rd position. The fact that Wurz is trying to overtake him over and over again is not helping him.

Oh, Piquet slid away!

But he manages to get on the track right again!

But Wurz doesn´t! I have a feeling the both of them touched and now Wurz has to wait to rejoin the race. I said so in the Feature Race already: Bad luck is always with the wrong people.

Let´s see again how this could´ve happened.

And as I said Wurz rejoins last.

Hernandez is now 3rd, in front of teammate Piquet.

Ah, this is looking way too close.

Kobayashi spins!

Prémat and Pantano can drive on, but Wirdheim overtook Prémat.

Now Kobayashi is last. Well he at least won the first race so he won´t leave France with no points.

That beeing said, let´s see the standings again.

Franck Montagny, the bad weather expert it seems, is driving near to Gene. There are enough laps left to challenge him...

Meanwhile Paffett drives another fastest lap.

And Monfardini now challenges Pavlovic, while Vilander seems to have gotten back in front of Paffett.

And Monfardini gets through.

And Vilander is overtaking him as well, because Pavlovic drove a wrong line.

And he spun! That´s a bit too much bad luck for Red Bull Racing Jr. in my opinion.

He´ll now have to wait to rejoin the race as well.

And it seems like Vilander had to do the same. He rejoins 19th.

While Pavlovic rejoins last.

Montagny got closer to Gene. Let´s hope those too don´t touch as well.

Ups, what´s that? Monfardini is off-track.

While Pavlovic pits.

And Monfardini rejoins in 20th position.

While Pavlovic stays last. No good wet weather result, but to be fair it´s not easy driving in wet conditions on your 2nd race.

Marc Gene meanwhile doesn´t care too much about all this. The only thing that matters is concentrating and bringing the first victory home for DSR Lotus.

Pantano in 9th position now close to Kovalainen.

While Yuji Ide challenges Lyons for 5th.

And Kovalainen is close to Doornbos, who isn´t too far from Ide and Lyons - That means Pantano has a realistic chance of getting points...

Doornbos runs a bit wide, while Ide still challenges Lyons.

Well Kovalainen couldn´t benefit from this scene.

While Ide is still nose on nose with Lyons.

But he now had the worse line and Lyons stays 5th.

And with 6 laps to go Gary Paffett again drives a fastest lap.

While Kovalainen trys to overtake Doornbos again.

Ouh, I don´t think Ides car was meant to do that, was it?

This will be close...

Well that´s too many cars too close to each other!

But if I see this right, noone was able to benefit.

I saw it right.

But Pantano is now in striking distance to Kovalainen.

And Wirdheim is running wide.

He returns to the track without loosing a position. And Milos Pavlovic drives a fastest lap! Could he really be able to do, that Bernoldi wasn´t able to do for 4 races?

Rosberg challenges Pantano for 10th.

And he get´s through.

Prémat is now trying to do the same, but it´ll be harder for him.

But don´t bother, we´re getting cut off.

Paffett in P13. Not bad for the fact that he was 21st during this race.

By the way,Wirdheim tried to overtake him but didn´t get through.

And I think Wirdheim spun!

Indeed he did, but Paffett has another driver in his neck right away.

Wirdheim meanwhile is waiting to rejoin the race.

And it seems like he rejoins in P19

Yup.

And with 4 laps to go Marc Gene is still leading the race. And the weather got much better meanwhile as well.

And Pavlovic drives another fastest lap. This young serbian boy really wants to show his potential.

Well then, let´s see the standings one last time.

Paffett this time succesfully overtakes Prémat.

While Pavlovic again drives another fastest lap.

Hernandez and Piquet are still driving in 3rd and 4th position. A double points finish would be awesome for HiTech Racing.

And if Montagny or Gene do nothing wrong the HiTech drivers won´t get anywhere near them as well.

Only one lap to go. I don´t think much will happen from here.

Gene on his way to his and DSR Lotus first race win.

While Paffett is trying to overtake Sharp!

And he get´s through! Still P11 will not get him any points.

Not far to go and Gene wins.

Only a few metres.

And Marc Gene wins the French Sprint Race!

Franck Montagny comes in second!

While HiTech Racing drivers Sergio Hernandez and Nelson Piquet Jr. finish 3rd and 4th.

Richard Lyons comes in 5th.

And Yuji Ide ends where he started: 6th.

And by the way, Pavlovic again drove a fastest lap. He really did score a point for him and Red Bull Racing Jr.

Standings and engine negotiation results coming next. Driver negotiation results are coming after the F1 race.

Last Mercedes contract signed
After DSR Lotus and Coloni Motorsport (FMSI in 2006) signed a contract with ferrari, who are only supporting 2 teams in the 2006 season, Sauber GP2 was left with no engine partner. "They did the only logical thing: sign with the best engine partner on the market." says the Mercedes Sales Manager. "We think that this team is really struggling under the bad performance of the ferrari engines and with mercedes engines they will be able to drive for the win just as all the other mercedes teams are!" The contract is said to be worth the standard £7.5m.

Not a bad race, but no points.

Glad that we signed with Mercedes
Disappointing is an understatement. Both drivers really need to up their game if we are going to be in with any chance of winning this championship, as both drivers in recent races have underperformed.
DSR Lotus statement

Well done! Fantastic race and congratulations to Marc Gene! He did perfect job and secured another 8 points. Surely not the fastest driver, but the most consistent, that's for sure.
Marc Gene was very excited about his performance: "2 races ago Alexander was 3rd, then I was second, so no surprise today one of us finished first. I'm very happy for all the team and to be honest this was maybe the best race in my career. I've becoming to forget what's the feeling to hear the national anthem, sitting on the top of the podium. It was terrible weather conditions, but I'm happy that I stayed away from troubles. Paffett attacked me on the first corner and I decided to let him go. After that Montagny was just behind my gearbox, but instead of the feature race it was me who was in front. I feel sorry for Adam Carroll and Gary Paffett, but these things happen in motorsports."

Tam boss Deyan Rangelov was on the 7th heaven: "Now I can announce: LOTUS is back in motorsports! From the second race on we improved rapidly and it is no doubt due to the experienced engineers Lotus gave us. Strange thing is that we got our first victory, but we fall behind in the team standings. Surely our next goal is that both our drivers finish in the points in a race. I should congratulate Gene for his victory. He had some bad times at the start of the season, but now we are very very happy with his performance. We are happy with our result, but I think we should still work on the pace while raining."

PS I want to thank Reve-san for finishing this round really fast.

ART Williams statement

Absolutely brilliant from Yuji Ide! He drove two excellent races and brought home very important points. It's such a shame that he had such a bad first round in the sprint race, otherwise another podium would have been realistic. But still, we're very satisfied with his work.

Wirdheim, again, couldn't convince us. We might think about giving Mathias Lauda a chance, soon. But for now Wirdheim will stay in the cockpit. Yet he will have to convince us in the next race.

Crazy Sprint Race
Well - some crazy driving out there today ruined a number of races.
Premat ruined Kobayashi's for us - perhaps he needs to get out on the skid-pan and practice his wet weather driving. Kamui clearly had the pace this weekend and probably would have made the points.
Lopez managed to keep his nose clean and move ahead of all the victims of the carnage ahead of him. Shame he couldn't have shown a bit more pace to take advantage.
Overall, we can't be too disappointed with a race weekend where we have gained points on the teams and drivers around us in the championship.

Reve-san - you have commentated brilliantly on a fantastic but crazy race today. Well done
Sorry mate, but there was no contact between Kobayashi and Premat. DSR Lotus may not be very fast while raining, but at least they keep away from troubles. So you should search for the reason of that spin in incapability of japanese drivers to keep on track, while racing ;) As a matter of fact Premat lost a position on that accident, so it's DSR Lotus that have to blame Kobayashi for ruining our race ;)

However, we are generous and we say that sort of things happen in motorsport and they are part of the show, so we will not claim a contestation. Case closed, cheers (B)
BCN

Well done Richard for getting us some points on what looked like it would be a disappointing weekend. We still need to improve for the next race, looking At Sharpy to improve once again and help Richard out up front!

Great coverage again reve-san, well done
iSport International Statement

iSport is quite disappointed with the outcome of this weekend. Despite of the great qualifying, 3 points are clearly very little for our goals. Technical problems affected both Pantano and Paffet during the weekend, so we surely need to work on the reliability. Pace was good, and we are quite satisfied with our drivers. I believe next weekend we'll be able to compensate the points lost in Magny Cours.
obvious things are obvious:
No Grand Prix this weekend.
The thread is down too much ;)

Furthermore, the next Silverstone will be up next weekend and the second mid season test will be up on wednesday, Jan 4th. I would therefor like to ask everyone who hasn´t send his testing plans yet (and who wants to participate) to send the info in.

Merry Christmas everyone :)
