It will make for a damn interesting race if we do get 2001 rain levels in Malaysia, but for safety reasons, its an odd decision. I can understand doing away with the intermediates, but when there's a monsoon, you need extreme wets! Lets see how it pans out.

I thought the old situation was that there were two tyres: wet and extreme-wet. The only change IIRC was just that the tyres were renamed to intermediate and wet, but are essentially the same tyres.

Thats the impression I got also.

How far back is that going? Because I'm sure there was a situation where you had Intermediates, Wets and then Extreme-Wets at the same time.
Article from last year when they (Bridgestone and some teams) were testing the new wet compound:

"The new rubber has a compound and tread pattern that is halfway between the current extreme and wet (intermediate) tyre."

Nick & Chet are right

"Standard wet-weather tyres will now officially be known as 'intermediates', and extreme wet-weather tyres will be referred to simply as 'wets'. The latter will feature a green central groove."

Taken from the F1 website, under this years regs.

Yeah, that was shelved as they were complaining it was, frankly, useless.

It's the same as last season - inters and wets - the only difference is that they were called wets and extreme wets last year - essentially the same tyres, just with different names.

Renault to lose a sponsor for next year: [en.f1-live.com]

Dunno how much of an impact that is, but I'm sure it's not good for them.

Not good at all, since ING is leaving at the end of the year as well.
Yeap, if they don't find new sponsors for next year, I somehow doubt that they'll be staying around as long as they are saying.

was it 2007 or 2008 they said there was a 99% chance of rain during the race and yet it remained bone dry ;)

2007 I think. The race started at 4pm local time that year, and there was major speculation about it being hit by a thunderstorm. Pfffft.
But with the start being later this year, hopefully it'll bring the race into line with a decent monsoon. A downpour 15-20 laps in would make things pretty interesting.

I'll probably just watch the live quali and race - got uni tomorrow :(

All the sessions are on at easy times, except first practice, which is the most boring too so, no reason to wake up just for that.

Won't monsoon weather mean the race will be abandoned/ under the safety car? There is no way the cars can drive safely in monsoon conditions.

Safety Car would be deployed, like it was in 2001. Can't imagine them actually abandoning the race unless the drains got overwhelmed and the track actually flooded; they care too much about TV audiences for one thing. And assuming the rain was only relatively short, the track would be ready to go again amazingly quickly afterwards. There's such residual heat around the place, even monsoon levels of water would just burn straight off again in no time.

1 hour left till fp1...anyone else watchin it live? lol
