It's not about not having a good defense, what I am talking about is playing without trying to impose an attacking game or score goals. How many times have you seen teams try to hold on to a draw? The World Cup final last year was only good because France was going for it, despite being a player down, and Italy wasn't even dreaming about doing a play past the midfield. Being one player up they still were afraid of scoring and just like almost the rest of their games they sat back and just wanted to go on to PKs, it seemed. If it wasn't for France being brave - due to having one less player - and actually trying to win the game, that match would have sucked big time.

Brazil and Italy in 1970 was heaven to watch. Brazil and Italy in 1994 was dreadful. I am using Italy here in many examples as it fits very well but my point extends to any team.

Indeed .. If you have a good defence, it doesnt mean you have to play like pussy's.. And not trying to attack, and let the opponent make the game..
Like Liverpool they have a good defence.. But they arent afraid to attack.. And play some pretty nice football to watch. Italy however does play an awful game to watch, a bit like Chelsea these days ;)

They dutchies however want to play some nice football.. But they cant get it to work.. Allthough they probaly have the most creative players in there squad..

If your squad is naturally geared towards defence, go out and attack. The good defence will do their job, but you need to get people forward to give you strength at BOTH ends of the pitch!

Italy are great defenders, but they play defensive football too. It's dull. Virtually all of their World Cup goals came throug counter-attacks.

And wasn't Del Piero's goal against Germany so great!

Italy played with attacking fullbacks (Zambrotta and Grosso) and three defensive midfielders (Gattuso, Pirlo and Perotta), and then Camoranase and Totti wandering about the place ahead of them with Toni up front. Some people might call that a negative 4-5-1, others can see the greatness of the 2-5-3, a slap back to the great old attacking WM formation from days of yore.

Okay, Italy don't play the most expansive football in the world, but given a choice between a tight system and a World Cup win, or attacking flair and no prizes I know which one I would chose.

That's the mentality that hurt football! A team playing beautifully didn't win many times simply due to a lack of luck. Brazil won 1958, 1962 and 1970 with magnificent squads playing beautifully. Netherlands lost in 1974 and 1978 due to lack of luck, especially 78 I'd say (Argentina won after paying Peru to give up their game so they could make it to the final, and they beat Holland out of sheer heart. Even though they were better in that match they shouldn't have been there. Maybe Holland would have beaten Brazil!). 1982 Brazil lost thanks to foolish Toninho Cerezo, 1994 we had a dreadful final match after many "locked up" games (Brazil vs Sweden both times, USA...). It's not that you lose when you play pretty, is that sometimes the other team just has more luck. Germany lost to Italy because the German team wasn't that great, they just really overachieved a lot and were usually trying to get a goal in.

And for a quick reference, check youtube for videos of Zico playing for Flamengo (one example of flair + wins). ;-)

Oh yeah. I do remember. 2-0 for Holland, Robben gets replaced, 2-3 for Czech Republic.

That was an awesome match. I remember that, when seeing Robben being replaced, I said to my dad: "You'll see. Advocaat replaces the best player on the pitch - Holland will lose this game". I was right.

Another game which was as great as the one mentioned above is, in my opinion, France-Italy in the EURO 2000 final . Italy were far better than France. I still remember Toldo cover his face in the palms after letting the Wiltord's shot into the net. I felt very sorry for the Italians. Luckily ,they took their revenge in 2006.

One way of looking at it... or maybe it was because they were naive to what was required to win. It works the other way to - look at how Manchester United won the Champions League; great attacking football, but also a huge amount of luck along the way. In the final Munich were by far the better team and it was only two strikes agaiinst the woodwork (from Jancker and Scholl) that kept MU in the game. But while MU were good to watch Bayern were nothing more than workmanlike.

I'm with you on an emotional level - I think we would all want to watch teams playing open and fast football, but it has been proven that in the modern game the odds are against you winning if you play this way. Greece in Euro 2004 is a case in point.

I am well aware of Zico, although I only really remember him from the 1986 World Cup, and vauguely 1982. And I have seen several YouTube compilations of his play - he makes Beckham look crap at set pieces :)

Totally off the main topic, as a Brazilian what are your thoughts on Marcelo at Real Madrid? Brazil are crying out for a left back since Bobby Carlos retired, and frankly I think Gilberto is nothing more than average. Don't know much about Kléber, but I guess he has nebver been first choice so far and probably never will.

Oooo thank you so much for mentioning that, St. Hubbins! :D

I never got to see Marcelo play in Brazil, I just know he came up from the juniors of Fluminense and quickly filled in the left wingback where he did very well, but apparently he's very offensive and what I did get to see of him at Real Madrid didn't really please me, he seemed very nervous and anxious on the games I followed. He could have the potential, after all he is still very young and not everyone develops at the pace that Alexandre Pato is developing recently (Milan forward). Gilberto is absolute garbage in my opinion ;), all he does is take up space that someone else could be using! I'd rather see Brazil play a 3-5-2 if it meant Gilberto would not play.

The replacement for Roberto Carlos was to be Athirson, he absolutely rocked from 98-00, he was kicking butt in the U-23 team but didn't play much because the coach at the time was trying to get Fábio Aurélio (Liverpool) sold as he was his agent... and Fábio Aurélio was complete crap too. Athirson had offers of $25 mi from Barça, Arsenal and even 30 from Juventus but he renewed with Flamengo, but also signed a pre-contract with Juve for 2001! So Flamengo lost him for a year, Athirson couldn't play for a year due to the legal issues and in the end Juve only paid $1.5 million dollars, and Athirson never recovered from those problems and was very average. He was at Bayern München for a bit but never got into the German game, so we really need someone to step up again. I heard of Kléber too, and Dunga might as well try him, he can't be worse than Gilberto. I may be a bit biased but Flamengo's wingbacks are quite good usually, the left wingback has his rollercoaster moments though.

About Man Utd and Bayern, did you notice that as soon as Matthäus left Bayern just lost it? Bayern was just playing off their physical endurance and will, and Matthäus "amazingness". Man U were always the best team but just couldn't get it going, and in the World Club Champ they were lucky not to lose to Palmeiras! (And got severely trashed the following year in Brazil, I was in the stadium to see it ;)).

Greece... pure luck. We all know they suck and they'll never make it again, it caught the world off guard. And Roberto Carlos was way past his prime for several years, he should have left the national team in 2003 :p

It was just a friendly match. Nothing important. They were testing different tactics and reserve players.

I love to see England out of Euro 2008. Here, in Brazil, lots of soccer fans says that English Championship is the best. I don't see it...

Lampard who?
Gerrard who?
Terry who?
Owen who?
Ferdinand who?
Rooney who?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha... ;););););););););)

I think why people say that is because we have some of the top players attracted here (despite the weather, which I guess is why we have less South Americans than for instance Spain) and that the league is strong and so close. Then you've got strength in terms of European performance. Twice in the last 3 years we've had a team in the Champions League final (and it being the 4th best team in the UK).

I can't see much of an argument for or against the Premier League being the strongest, as while we have Ronaldo and Rooney (and had Henry while he was useful) La Liga has Ronaldinho (not his strongest spell admittedly), Cannavaro, Messi, Henry (still good in a strong team) and Serie A (not so strong in the last 4 or 5 years) has Kaka and co.

Personally I always enjoyed watching Football Italia (no prizes for guessing what that was) when it was on one of our terrestrial channels a good 5 year back. Not so much of a fan now.
