I suppose technically, he could be done for assault, but that would only be used to make an example of him, and would be beyond harsh.

The diving all the way through the tournament (last night included) was far, far worse.

to be fair we dont know what materazzi said. as far as i know zidane has never done that in his career so it must have been fairly bad although zidane still should not have done it.

remember cantona with his kick on some guy in the crowd who was no doubt taunting him. people hardly talk about it now yet they still rmemeber what a great player he was. all i can say is in the heat of the battle, ones mind can go bereserk whereas in a normal situation you would act differently. its just that zidane done it in the world cup final and i t was his last game so it was so important.

but zidane did not lose the game for france. even if he took one and scored it would be 5-4 i believe.

he has been shown 14 red cards in his career, and only 2 of those came from a double yellow... the guy has quite a reputation for losing his temper ;-)

Because at the moment, it is against the rules to use video evidence to make a decision.

Yep the use of video evidence is not allowed but last night was the perfect example why it should be used for "certain" incidents. Still don't think it had and baring on thr result with the standard of penaltys. The problem FIFA have now is how to disciplin him. A suspension would do nothing a heavy fine would set a dangerous president the only logical thing would have been to strip him of the golden ball.

FORZA AZZURRI!!!!!!!!!!!

I just heard on the radio that some sources say that Materazzi said something like 'your sister is a b*tch' others say that Materazzi said that Zidane was an Algerian terrorist.

so you're saying he had food poisoning, causing him to go mental? ;)

and why are you guys defending him, it was an act of thuggish violence that should never be seen in a sporting environment, even if his sister was called a b*tch or wh*re or whatever.

all he had to do was say "so is your mum" and that would have been the end of it :)

god, it's worse than 8 year olds in the playground.

like i said in the heat of the battle one can flip. you know most murders occur between ppl who know each like in families and something happens and they just flip.

so if he'd stabbed him to death on the pitch, it would have been ok because it was "the heat of the moment"?

these are supposed to be professionals, can they not take a little verbal abuse from the opposing team without lashing out violently?
