NEWS ROUND-UP: CONTRACTS, SEASON TWO CHANGES, AND STATISTICS

Three drivers sign contract extensions

Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jack Brabham have signed one-season extensions to their current contract, keeping them with their respective teams until the end of season three.

Any rumour of Schumacher leaving Ferrari for Mercedes any time soon was quietened by the signing of his extension, although the identity of his team mate for the coming seasons remains a mystery. Ferrari and Renault have agreed a deal in principal to swap Alberto Ascari with Fernando Alonso, but such a deal can only take place if Benetton are relegated (as Benetton are half-Italian, Ascari has an affiliation with them and won't have free choice of teams to sign for if they stay up).

Neither Juan Manuel Fangio nor Sebastian Vettel have signed extensions to their own contracts yet, and it is believed that they are both keeping their options open for a possible move to Ferrari in the future.

None of the five drivers whose contracts run out at the end of this season have signed extensions yet, with Scheckter and Hulme involved in relegation battles, Hakkinen and Fittipaldi out of favour with their teams, and Kimi Raikkonen reportedly looking for a drive with another team for next season after being unhappy with his Cooper's poor performance. Raikkonen has free choice of teams to move to as he is currently driving for a team he is not affiliated with by F1 career or nationality, and a move to Mercedes to replace fellow Finn Mika Hakkinen looks like the most likely option, although Williams are reportedly also interested in swapping Nelson Piquet for Raikkonen.

Performance adjustments for "closer racing" in season two

Two new rules have emerged that look set to come into effect at the beginning of season two that are designed to make the qualifying and racing sessions closer and less predictable.

The first change will be an increase in the "Variation" figure for each driver, from 1000 to 1500. This figure is designed to add a fluctuation to each driver's performance away from their base figure and so an increase in the figure will, in theory, result in higher fluctuations in performance and therefore less predictable racing.

Another rule has also been announced that involves the team's BHP figures for each race. At the start of the season, each team will be given a number of "BHP points", which they can spend as they wish throughout the course of the season to give them performance boosts for certain races. The amount of points a team is allocated will depend on where the team finished in the previous season's Constructor's Championship (with the promoted teams replacing the bottom two), with teams finishing lower down receiving more points at the start of the season. Therefore, in theory, the weaker teams will be given more performance boosts, resulting in closer racing.

The BHP points system will also add an element of strategy to each race, with each team not knowing what the other teams are doing until after they have made their decision on how many points to allocate for the next race.

With seven winners in the opening seven races this season, some will argue the necessity of bringing in measures to make the racing closer and more unpredictable, but there is a general trend of which drivers qualify and finish at the front, and which struggle to finish in the points, which these rules are trying to minimise.

FERRARI LOCK OUT ISTANBUL FRONT ROW

Michael Schumacher claimed his eighth pole position of the season as Ferrari locked out the front row of the grid for the second race in a row.

Schumacher's pole lap time of 1:24.078 was 0.706 seconds quicker than his Italian team mate, with Fangio just 0.04 seconds behind in third place.

The front three rows look identical to the last race in Spain, with Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Aytron Senna rounding out the top six.

Jackie Stewart put in another strong qualifying lap in his underpowered BRM to start seventh, but he is one of three drivers who will incur penalties after the race for rule violations.

Stewart will receive a 10-second penalty for colliding with Mercedes' Mika Hakkinen in the pit lane, whilst Denny Hulme and Hakkinen himself will have 20 seconds added to their race time for impeding another driver's qualifying lap.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing day for Renault, with Alain Prost qualifying 12th, and Fernando Alonso way off the pace in 16th. Rumours are starting to circulate that Prost could be looking for a drive in another team - with Ferrari, Williams and McLaren his other options - but it seems unlikely Renault will want to let him go, forcing him to wait until season three. Alonso, meanwhile, will be hoping his move to Ferrari next season - which can only happen if Benetton are relegated - gets the green light after a disappointing season in which his best result has been a fifth place in Monaco, with the Spaniard qualifying in the top 10 only three times in the opening ten races.

Alonso's move may be compromised, however, as Nino Farina - fresh from his creditable 8th place in Jerez - gave himself the opportunity to score more points after qualifying his Benetton 13th.

But it was the same story up front, as Schumacher maintains his remarkable record of qualifying pole in every dry session this season. For a long time, however, it looked like Ascari and Fangio would challenge the German, with both being less than a tenth of a second off the pace for the majority of the session. Schumacher, however, showed his class and pace with a blistering final hot lap, seven-tenths quicker than anyone else could manage.

The seven-times World Champion is now in the best position possible to extend his 23 point Driver's Championship lead over Fangio, with Vettel - starting fifth and having scored only one point in the last two races - needing a strong race to keep in touch with the top two.

Schumacher's lead was only a slender one for most of the session.

Jackie Stewart received a 10-second race penalty - his third of the season - for this pit lane incident with Mika Hakkinen.

Ascari leapfrogged Fangio on his last hot lap to secure Ferrari's second consecutive front row lockout.

Lewis Hamilton will be hoping for another strong race on the back of his second place in Jerez. Final times on the left.
Let's do this, Vettel.
come on Fernando!! Pls Benetton get relegated..

FERRARI SCORE MAIDEN ONE-TWO FINISH IN ISTANBUL

Michael Schumacher completed a hat-trick of wins with a dominant display at the Turkish Grand Prix, with Alberto Ascari finishing second, making Ferrari the first constructor to score a one-two finish in the Legend's Trophy.

Schumacher finished 42 seconds ahead of Ascari, who successfully held off Juan Manuel Fangio in the last few laps to complete the perfect race for Ferrari that stretches their lead at the top of the Constructor's Championship, and Schumacher's in the Driver's Championship.

Sebastian Vettel kept his championship challenge alive with a fourth placed finish, ahead of Ayrton Senna fifth, and Nelson Piquet, who scored his first points since the San Marino GP when he brought his Williams home in sixth.

It was a race of split strategies, with some drivers - including Fangio - opting for a one-stop strategy. As it turned out, the quickest option was to run the whole race without pitting, a strategy that benefited not only the Ferraris, but Vettel, Senna and Piquet, as well as Emerson Fittipaldi and Alain Prost, who finished 7th and 8th respectively.

With less fuel on board, Fangio was able to keep up with Schumacher for the first half of the race, with Lewis Hamilton frustrated behind the slower Ferrari of Alberto Ascari who he was unable to pass before he pitted.

After their respective stops, Fangio came out behind Ascari, whilst Lewis Hamilton rejoined 9th, before his McLaren was forced to retire following an accident involving Fernando Alonso.

Alonso suffered a miserable weekend throughout. After qualifying 16th, the Spaniard had little pace in the race but made his way up to 10th after the pit stops. Unfortunately, there was little the double-world champion could do about Hamilton's stricken McLaren that had just spun at turn 9, with the unavoidable collision resulting in a new front wing for Alonso and a fourth retirement of the season for Hamilton.

Whilst Ascari's Ferrari was clearly slower than Schumacher's - at an average of nearly 1.5 seconds per lap - the Italian was at least able to demonstrate his racecraft and defensive driving ability, keeping Fangio behind him for the second half of the race and scoring his first podium finish since his victory at the German GP, eight races ago.

There was little change in the relegation battle, with Jack Brabham's 10th being the only point scored by any of the bottom eight drivers. Piquet and Fittipaldi's 6th and 7th places give them daylight to the bottom five and they should now both be safe for the remainder of the season.

Niki Lauda's relegation battle took another blow following this first lap retirement after a collision with Benetton's Jody Scheckter.

Damon Hill overtook several cars - including this brave move around the outside of his teammate at turn 7 - but was one of several victims of being on the wrong pit strategy.

Lighter on fuel, Fangio was able to keep up with Schumacher during the opening stint.

Fernando Alonso couldn't avoid Hamilton's spinning McLaren, signalling the end of Hamilton's race, and probably his championship challenge.

Alberto Ascari spent most of the race with another driver trying to overtake him, but the Ferrari never yielded.

Emerson Fittipaldi leads home a train of cars for a creditable 7th.

Schumacher's win extends his championship lead to 33 points.
Hamilton's day couldn't get worse and it blows his championship chances really badly. What a shame.
Vettel's gonna go under pressure from Senna.
FANGIO TAKES BRITISH GP POLE AHEAD OF PROST AND SCHUMACHER

Juan Manuel Fangio broke Michael Schumacher's pole streak in a rain-affected qualifying session for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Alain Prost outperformed his Renault car to line up alongside the Argentine on the front row of the grid, with Schumacher - who had been on pole for the last four races - starting third.

The track was dry for the start of the session, but with rain in the air, it was imperative that drivers got on track and put in a quick lap early, as it was unclear if the rain would stop enough for the track to dry out later on in the session.

Fangio's time of 1:21.825 was the quickest of the opening mini-session, just over a tenth of a second ahead of Prost, and Schumacher uncharacteristically over half a second off the pace.

Alberto Ascari completes an all-Ferrari second row, with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel 5th and 6th respectively.

The rain soon followed, catching out the seven drivers who did not go out initially - including Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso, and both the Lotus and Williams cars, who face a tough task to score points on their home Grand Prix.

Their misfortune, however, was to the benefit of others. Both Mike Hawthorn (9th) and Niki Lauda (10th) qualified in the top 10 for the first time this season, giving them a good opportunity for points that will help their relegation battles, with Nino Farina, Kimi Raikkonen and Jack Brabham just behind them on the grid.

Jackie Stewart also put in a good lap for 7th, the fifth race in a row the Scot has qualified in the top 10.

With the track remaining wet for the rest of the session, nobody was able to improve, cementing Fangio's first ever Legend's Trophy pole.

Once the track got wet, the rain didn't stop, forcing the likes of Alonso to have to try and set a time in difficult conditions.

Nelson Piquet was one of several drivers to be caught out by how quickly the rain started falling at the start of the session.

Vettel - 46 points off the championship lead - needs a strong race to keep his title hopes alive.

The Lotus' were also caught out by the weather and start their home GP way down the field. Final times on the left.

Fangio's pole was not only his first of the season, but the first time he's out-qualified Michael Schumacher all season.
Hamilton 5th, I hope a strong race for him, but it looks like his championship chances are gone already.
SCHUMACHER FENDS OFF PROST TO CLAIM BRITISH GP WIN

Michael Schumacher survived a late charge from Renault's Alain Prost to claim his fourth Legends Trophy race win in a row, by a margin of under three seconds.

Starting from third on the grid, the Ferrari team opted for a no-stop strategy - just like they did successfully in the last race in Turkey - and when Schumacher took the lead after Prost and Fangio pitted, he never relinquished it.

Pole sitter Fangio finished third after being overtaken by Prost at the end of the Hangar Straight on the first lap, and gives up a further 10 points to Schumacher at the top of the Driver's Championship.

Alberto Ascari produced another solid drive for fourth, the Italian overtook Schumacher off the line, but then lost the place a few corners later when Schumacher pulled a move on him going into Stowe corner.

Sebastian Vettel needed a strong race to keep his championship chances alive, but the Red Bull driver could only manage fifth. He now lies 61 points behind Schumacher with 6 races to go, and his title chances seem to be all but over.

Jackie Stewart was finally able to convert a good qualifying session into a result by finishing sixth, moving him clear of the relegation battle, while Ayrton Senna also made a no-stop strategy work to recover from 16th on the grid to finish seventh.

Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult race, losing a place at the start and then spinning off at Copse on lap 11 which demoted him to the back of the field. He would recover to finish 10th.

It was a race of low attrition, with only two cars failing to finish. Jack Brabham's survival hopes were dealt another blow when he collided with Jody Scheckter on the opening lap and was forced to retire - an incident which saw Scheckter receive a 20-second penalty. The other retirement was Damon Hill, who in his efforts to recover from starting at the back of the grid, spun off at Copse corner and hit the wall, nearly collecting the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton who had himself spun off only a few seconds previously.

There was also a bizarre incident on the slow-down lap whereby Emerson Fittipaldi crashed into Alain Prost's Renault. Fittipaldi, who appeared to lose concentration as he approached a group of cars going much slower than him, was reprimanded for the incident by the race stewards but not given a time penalty as the incident happened after the conclusion of the race. However, with penalties already accrued for crashes in San Marino and France, as well as for ignoring blue flags in South America, the Brazilian has been warned that one more penalty could result in a points deduction.

There were no such concerns for Schumacher though, as he stretched his lead to 43 points, and Ferrari's lead to 80 in the Constructor's Championship.

Fangio got off the line well to lead after the first corner, whilst Ascari was able to pull a rare overtaking move on his team mate.

But it was all change a few corners later when both Prost and Schumacher moved into 1st and 3rd respectively.

The "Fittipaldi Train" is becoming a familiar sight, this time the Brazilian tries to hold onto 10th place...

...but he had to concede to Mika Hakkinen, who's impressive drive was neutralised by the wrong pit stop strategy.

Hamilton and Stewart battled over 6th place for the opening 10 laps...

...before Hamilton threw his McLaren off the track, and was nearly collected by the Williams of Damon Hill.

Renault opted for a one-stop strategy, leaving Prost with all the work to do to catch up to Schumacher with fresher tyres in the second half of the race.

Niki Lauda drove a strong race for Brabham to finish 8th and move himself out of the relegation places for the first time this season.

Hamilton and Alonso renew their infamous rivalry, but only over 11th place.

Prost was quicker than Schumacher by over a second a lap, but it wasn't enough to catch him up before the end of the race.

Schumacher's fourth win in a row puts him in a commanding position in the Driver's Championship.

The action wasn't over at the end of the race, as Fittipaldi causes a crash on the slow-down lap, the fifth time he's crashed into another car this season.
you need to ban these no-stops man, doesn't seem exactly fair to me. Also, not fun how slow Alonso was here, got beaten by his teammate smh

I have been considering the race strategies and the potential of increasing the length of races so as to encourage more pit stops. However, my theory is that a small increase will mean everyone will one-stop, as the races won't be long enough for two or more stops, and I'm not sure I have the time to run full length races.

If everyone is on the same strategy, the races won't, in theory, be as interesting. The last dozen or so laps of this race were actually a lot of fun to watch because Prost was charging down Schumacher on his fresher tyres, and Schumacher was trying to hold onto his lead on his older ones. This situation wouldn't have happened if everyone was running the same race.

Nevertheless, race length is still something I'm analysing for next season.

As for Alonso, he qualified 20th after being caught out by the weather in qualifying, 18 places lower than Prost, but finished 9th, only seven behind.
10th wasn't great effort for Hamilton, such a shame

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher returned to his trademark dominant qualifying form with his ninth pole position of the season after an eventful qualifying session for the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring Circuit.

Schumacher's lap time of 1:15.459 was over seven-tenths of a second faster than anyone else could manage, but the real story of the session was drivers being penalised for impeding another driver's hot lap.

Lewis Hamilton posted the second-fastest time during the session but misses out on his first ever front row start as he was one of the drivers found guilty of impeding, when he held up team mate Ayrton Senna, he starts 4th.

Previously, drivers were given a 20-second penalty to be applied at the end of the race for such an infraction, but with eight drivers in total being penalised, the stewards had to take drastic action.

That action is bringing forward the ability to penalise drivers grid places - a move that wasn't scheduled to be introduced until next season - to avoid a confusing race whereby several drivers would be awaiting penalties before knowing their final race result.

All eight drivers - Hamilton, Fangio, Ascari, Stewart, Lauda, Piquet, Alonso and Scheckter - were subsequently handed five-placed grid penalties for the race. Hamilton only loses two places due to other drivers below him also being penalised.

The penalties promote Alain Prost to the front row of the grid. The Frenchman came close to winning the last race at Silverstone from the same grid slot and will be seeking to continue his good form that now sees him in a position to battle for third in the Driver's Championship.

Sebastian Vettel - who is third in the championship - moves up to third on the grid, alongside the aforementioned Hamilton, who's quick laps will give him confidence heading into the race, despite the penalty.

Graham Hill starts fifth, with Mika Hakkinen a creditable sixth. The Finn has been struggling all season - being outqualified by team mate Fangio in every round - but a solid lap and the benefit of the penalties to others sees Hakkinen in his best ever grid slot - his previous best being 13th in Canada, where he would go on to finish a season-high 7th.

Fangio, Schumacher's closest title challenger, drops to seventh after his penalty, with Benetton's Nino Farina an unfamiliar driver alongside the Argentine on the grid.

Alberto Ascari struggled in the second Ferrari, a poor session not helped by his penalty that drops him to 11th on the grid. Ayrton Senna (15th), the two Williams' (18th & 19th), and Fernando Alonso (21st) were also off the pace, and hampered by other cars, and further contribute to a mixed grid that should lend itself to plenty of overtaking during the race.

The early introduction of the grid-penalty system means that drivers who accrue five penalties during the course of the season are now automatically given a 10-place grid penalty for the next round (instead of a points deduction as was previously going to be the case). Fittipaldi, Stewart and Scheckter are now all on four penalties each, with Juan Manuel Fangio on three.

Schumacher goes into the race with a 43 point lead at the top of the Driver's Championship, with Ferrari 80 points ahead of their nearest rivals McLaren.
