FINAL LAP CHAOS LEADS TO VETTEL VICTORY IN CANADA

Sebastian Vettel survived a dramatic end to the Canadian GP to become the seventh different winner in seven races in a race that saw only eight cars cross the finish line.

In a race that was fairly uneventful until the last few laps, it looked like Michael Schumacher would cruise to victory, only the second time he had converted pole position into a win in five attempts this season. However, several teams miscalculated the amount of fuel they needed to put into their cars at the pit stop, resulting in multiple retirements as cars ran out of fuel on the last lap.

Schumacher himself was the only driver to recognise his impending failure, and came into the pits on the penultimate lap for a splash and dash that gave him second place.

Ayrton Senna also took advantage of the last lap retirements to complete the podium, with Damon Hill and Jim Clark, who were fighting for the last few points, promoted to fourth and fifth.

Emerson Fittipaldi and Mika Hakkinen made the most of the drama to help alleviate the pressure on them following their disappointing starts to the season. Fittipaldi, who had qualified 21st, took his second 6th place finish in three races to move him away from the relegation battle, whilst Hakkinen - who had only scored one Legend's Trophy point before the race - finished seventh.

Niki Lauda, the only driver who hadn't scored any points, was the last car to finish, in eighth place.

Lewis Hamilton, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Alberto Ascari, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Denny Hulme and Nino Farina all ran out of fuel right at the end of the race - although Hamilton and Fangio were still classified ninth and tenth respectively, with only eight cars seeing the chequered flag.

Calm before the storm

Schumacher started on pole, with a well-behaved first corner seeing the top seven drivers in grid order on the opening lap, with Fangio second, ahead of Ascari and Hamilton.

With the cars at the front maintaining steady gaps to each other, the main story of the first half of the race was the Lotus cars, who clearly had slower race pace, battling hard to defend their 9th and 11th positions from the BRM's and Coopers.

Nelson Piquet, who is coming under pressure following a series of poor races, was the only driver to crash into the "Wall of Champions", retiring on lap seven.

Most cars came in for their pit stop at the halfway stage of the race, with Ascari causing confusion in the pit lane by coming in on the same lap as teammate Schumacher, costing himself time while waiting for the German to be serviced, whilst also holding up Hamilton who was unable to get past the queuing Ferrari in the narrow pit lane - an infringement that saw a 20-second penalty handed to the Italian.

Sebastian Vettel was one of a few drivers who stayed out, taking the lead of the race, with Senna and Hill (4th and 5th) also not stopping. Any talk of a no-stop strategy was soon halted, however, when the remaining cars came in with six laps to go.

Montre-all out of gas

Schumacher looked to be heading to a second victory of the season, with Fangio in a second place that would see him stay at the top of the Driver's Championship, and Hamilton continuing his strong form in third.

However, all was about to change when Schumacher came in for a surprising second stop on the beginning of the last lap of the race, another error from Ferrari once again costing them the opportunity of a race win.

This promoted Fangio to the lead, seemingly repeating the inherited victory he enjoyed in the opening race in Belgium, but the Argentine himself ran out of fuel on the final lap.

Hamilton also ran out of fuel, which promoted Vettel, who was fourth at the start of the opening lap, to the lead.

Prost was looking good for second place until he ran out of fuel, promoting Schumacher back up to second, ahead of Senna third.

Several more retirements ensued - including Denny Hulme who threw away a fifth placed finish when he ran out of fuel at the last chicane - but Vettel held on for the victory, incredibly the seventh different winner in the opening seven races of the season, and the quadruple-World Champion German takes the lead of the Driver's Championship for the first time this season.

Scheckter's retirement was the only talking point of the opening lap.

The Lotus', Coopers and BRMs provided a nostalgic view of 1960's F1.

Piquet didn't do his season any favours when he became the only victim of the Wall of Champions.

Schumacher was kept honest by Fangio, but never seriously threatened.

Ascari compromises his and Hamilton's races with an ill-timed pit stop.

Clark finally succumbed to the pressure from Jackie Stewart's BRM.

The McLarens - on different strategies - enjoy a rare inter-team battle.

Ferrari were able to save Schumacher's race by bringing him in with a lap to go.

Hamilton suffers his third retirement of the season...

...with Alain Prost also running out of fuel on the final lap.

Vettel finally reaps the reward of his consistency with an unexpected victory.

Super race!
Yep, Hamilton's luck gone in a bad way in Canada, I hope he sort that out next race.
This race is totally MEGA! My favourite driver has finally won the race.
NEWS: ALONSO, MELBOURNE, & QUALIFYING

Alonso to Ferrari?

Fernando Alonso could be a Ferrari driver next season, after a deal was agreed in principal for the Spaniard to swap with Alberto Ascari at the end of the season.

However, the deal can only go ahead if Benetton are relegated from Division 1. Should Benetton - who are half Italian - survive, then they would be the only team Ascari could move to under the affiliation rules.

Both Alonso and Ascari are under two-season contracts with Renault and Ferrari respectively, but it is believed that all parties involved have already agreed to the potential swap taking place.

Alonso is frustrated with the lack of performance from his Renault car, while Renault themselves seem content to trade their double-world champion for a driver ranked two places higher in the all-time F1 rankings.

Ferrari, meanwhile, are looking to replace Ascari, who's season has been characterised by driver errors, whilst Ascari is reportedly unhappy at the lack of support he is receiving from the Italian team.

Any driver swap for next season cannot be officially confirmed until after the Spanish GP, but this particular deal will have to wait until and only if Benetton are relegated.

Elsewhere in the paddock, Mercedes are reportedly actively looking for a replacement for Mika Hakkinen, with Lewis Hamilton said to be top of their wishlist.

Hakkinen has underperformed this season and is only outside of the relegation places by virtue of his fortuitous seventh place at the last race in Canada. However, neither McLaren nor Hamilton are likely to want to split, meaning Mercedes will have to look elsewhere - with Jackie Stewart and Nino Farina potential targets.

Farina is also being touted as a possible Red Bull driver next season, as the Austrian outfit may look to replace the inconsistent Emerson Fittipaldi. Fittipaldi's sixth place in Montreal - along with his other sixth in Monaco - will help keep him in favour with the Red Bull team, but he will need to up his game if he wants to keep his seat, with Niki Lauda also seen as a possible replacement for the Brazilian if he can survive relegation.

Season Two has a familiar start

Melbourne will play host to the opening round of the Season Two calendar, which looks set to increase to 20 races.

The Australian circuit has been a traditional opening race venue in Formula One for several years, but missed out on the opportunity to host a race in the first Legend's Trophy season.

The exact number of races that will be run next season, as well as any other changes or additions to the calendar, have not been confirmed, but a provisional calendar for Season Two is expected to be published at some point over the next few races.

Austin set for a busy qualifying

A revised qualifying format that comes into force at the next Grand Prix at Austin, USA, will see more on-track action, as there are increases to both the number of cars on track, and the number of laps each driver can complete.

Drivers will now be allowed up to 12 laps during the 45 minute session - an increase from 9 in previous races - with the number of cars allowed on track at any given time increased drastically from 10 to 18.

The changes have been made in an effort to reduce the gaps between the "mini-sessions" - when one lot of cars come in then another lot go out - and to provide a more exciting spectacle that should see cars on track for the duration of the session.

There is no further news on the qualifying format for next season, with the controversial proposed "Fastest Lap + Tokens" format proving unpopular with drivers, teams and fans, making its introduction next season an unlikely one.
I like that contract. However I find it ridiculous nearly everyone ran out of fuel. This is an issue with the track, magic data to be exact.

knowing where current F1 is going, I'd say go for it just because everyone hates it ;) ;)

Vote for me as the next Bernie!

Seriously though, I'll have a look at the magic data - I haven't touched it on any of the tracks but if this is something that's going to happen more than once, it needs to be at least partly rectified.
For personal reasons, I have been unable to dedicate any time to this championship for the last couple of weeks, however, I plan on running the next round at some point over the next few days.

In other news, I have set up a twitch profile and will be experimenting to see if I can broadcast future races and qualifying sessions live. More news on this as I test it out.
SCHUMACHER STORMS TO USA POLE

Michael Schumacher took his sixth pole of the season in a typically dominant display in which nobody could get within a second of the Ferrari.

Juan Manuel Fangio will start the race in Austin, Texas alongside Schumacher on the front row of the grid, the fourth time the Argentine has qualified second, with no poles to his name so far.

Alberto Ascari, who hasn't scored any points since the French Grand Prix, lines up third, with the in-form Alain Prost fourth.

Jim Clark put in a decent lap for fifth, with Lewis Hamilton the leading McLaren in what was a disappointing session for the British outfit, starting sixth.

Championship leader Sebastian Vettel faces a tough task to keep his 16-point lead alive from seventh on the grid, with Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna and Fernando Alonso rounding out the top ten.

A re-vamped qualifying format saw more cars (18) on track and more laps (12) for each car, the changes being brought in in an effort to reduce the gaps in action and improve the overall spectacle of the qualifying session.

The changes partly worked, with less time between the "mini-sessions", but there were still noticeable gaps, and a less than desirable ending to the session which saw just one car on track in the last 9 minutes. It is thought that the number of cars allowed on track at once will be reduced for the next race in Spain to generate more action throughout the session.

But while there were changes to the format of the session, the result remained the same as it has been for most of the season, with Schumacher taking yet another pole position that nobody ever threatened to get close to. The 1.071 second gap to Fangio in second was the biggest margin since the German Grand Prix, and Schumacher keeps his 100% record alive of qualifying pole in every dry qualifying session this season.

The question, inevitably, will be whether or not he can overcome his race gremlins and start converting his poles into race wins. Only one win this season from five pole positions is not good enough form to secure the inaugural Legends Trophy Driver's Championship, a point that is proven by his second place standing in the table, and he'll need to overcome a 16 point deficit to Vettel if he wants to have the championship lead after the race.

Fangio also has his sights on championship glory, with the Mercedes driver currently 22 points off the top, and in a good position to challenge for the race win in Austin. The McLarens lie fourth and fifth in the table, 29 points adrift of Vettel, and will once again need to show some of their characteristically strong race pace to move up the order and stay in touch with the top three.

At the bottom of the table, Jackie Stewart pulled out one of the standout laps of the session right at the end to qualify 8th, and the Scot will be hoping he doesn't suffer yet more unreliability issues with his BRM as he seeks to pull himself and the constructor away from their respective relegation battles. Meanwhile, Mika Hakkinen's 14th place will give him some hope of scoring some much needed points for a second race in a row following his 7th place in Canada.

Ascari and Fangio will be Schumacher's main threats from the start line.

The Austin track was included in this season's calendar following its warm reception from F1 drivers since it's introduction in 2012.

Alonso qualified in the top 10 for only the third time this season.

A bizarre turn of events saw Denny Hulme as the only car on track in the last nine minutes. Whilst all other drivers opted out of one of the five mini-sessions, Hulme missed out twice, leaving him with an empty track to complete his final flying run.

All eyes will be on whether Schumacher and Ferrari can have a trouble-free race.
Let's do this Vettel, we can show Hamilton who's good.
6th for Hamilton, let's see if he can win like he did in 2012 I guess.
SCHUMACHER WINS US GP AS VETTEL CRASHES ON OPENING LAP

Michael Schumacher took full advantage of Sebastian Vettel retiring on the opening lap of the United States Grand Prix, taking a lights-to-flag victory that promotes him to the top of the Driver's Championship.

Mercedes emphasised the importance of a quick start to nullify Schumacher's threat, but Juan Manuel Fangio wasn't able to overtake the German off the line, in the end finishing second for Mercedes, 18 seconds behind the dominant Ferrari, with Alain Prost third for Renault.

Vettel - whose only retirement up to this race had been from an oil leak in San Marino - crashed into Hamilton whilst trying to overtake him at turn 11 on the first lap, forcing both cars to retire and handing the German a 20-second penalty for the next race in Jerez.

In a race of high attrition - although this time not due to cars running out of fuel like at the last race in Canada - Damon Hill had a strong race, pulling several overtaking moves and navigating his way through the various incidents to finish fourth.

Ayrton Senna ensured he stayed just about in touch with the top three in the Driver's Championship with fifth, ahead of Fernando Alonso, who produced a solid race to finish sixth.

Schumacher's win means he becomes the first driver to pass the 100 point mark, and enjoys a nine point lead over Vettel, with Fangio a further four behind.

Meanwhile, in the Constructor's Championship, Ferrari's 25 points moves them back ahead of McLaren following their disappointing weekend, with Red Bull still in touch in third place.

But while one Ferrari drove an unassailable and trouble-free race, the other prancing horse of Alberto Ascari was forced to retire when his engine spectacularly let go on lap 12. The Italian had driven a solid race up to that point, running in third place and on course for a much needed podium, but the retirement means he is still yet to score any points since the French Grand Prix.

With only 11 cars crossing the finish line, the race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, provided an opportunity for the teams and drivers fighting relegation battles to score some valuable points. Mike Hawthorn took the best advantage of the various retirements in front of him, having qualified last the BRM driver drove a fine race to finish a season-best 7th place that moves him outside the bottom five in the Driver's Championship, with Niki Lauda scoring 4 more points for his second 8th place finish in a row.

Emerson Fittipaldi finished 9th, but not without controversy as he was involved in an accident that took the Cooper of Kimi Raikkonen out of the race on lap 10. The race stewards chose to take no further action over the crash, calling it a "racing incident", but Cooper will no doubt feel aggrieved with the decision, especially when Fittipaldi had an altercation with Raikkonen's teammate Denny Hulme later in the race.

It was a race where the stewards were busy throughout, with Vettel's penalty being the first of three incidents that warranted further sanctions. Nino Farina will not be the most popular man at Benetton after he drove into the back of his teammate Jody Scheckter in the opening lap, an incident which forced Scheckter out of the race, and Farina into the pits for a new front wing. The Italian was subsequently given a 20-second penalty that cost him the chance for a much needed point for 10th place.

Nelson Piquet also threw away the opportunity to finish 10th when he was penalised for a bizzare crash on the penultimate lap of the race that forced Jackie Stewart to retire. Suffering from throttle-related problems, Piquet tried to pit, but the ailing Williams crashed into Stewart's BRM whilst crossing the track to enter the pit lane. Having missed the pit entrance, Piquet was forced to try and drive the last lap, but pulled off the track half way round. The Brazilian would have been classified 10th due to Farina's penalty and Hakkinen being a lap down, but was himself handed a penalty for the incident with Stewart which demoted him to 11th, and gave Hakkinen the last point on offer.

It was a race that will be remembered for Schumacher's display of dominance, that if he can repeat without driver or team error, will surely see him as favourite to win the Driver's Championship. But the US Grand Prix will also be remembered for several high-profile retirements, including Jim Clark, who threw away a fifth place finish when his gearbox failed on the last lap.

Hamilton and Vettel's championship chances took a blow after Vettel misjudged his overtaking maneuver on the opening lap - the first time the German has crashed all season.

Emerson Fittipaldi did not make himself popular with the Cooper team, being involved in accidents involving both of their drivers.

There is never a good time for an engine failure, but Ascari lost the chance for some much needed points to relieve some of the pressure on him following a string of poor races.

Jackie Stewart spent much of the race in third place, trying to drive a no-stop strategy, but was forced to pit with a few laps to go for fuel and tyres.

The Circuit of the Americas justified its addition to the Legend's Trophy calendar, with overtaking throughout the race.

Schumacher, Fangio and Hakkinen also had to come in for late stops when they realised their no-stop strategies wouldn't work. Schumacher and Fangio were far enough ahead of the rest of the field that the late stops didn't cost them any places.

Jim Clark was hoping to become the eighth different winner in eight races this season, but retired from fifth place on the last lap.

Schumacher becomes the first driver to win two races this season, and sends out a strong message for the other title contenders.
Well, crap race.
Hamilton's day and the championship is just huge blow, not a good day.
DRIVERS WARNED OVER "EXCESSIVE PENALTIES"

Drivers have been warned that they could face points deductions or race bans if they incur too many penalties during a Legend's Trophy season.

Michael Hayward, head of the LTO, made the announcement shortly after the US Grand Prix, during which Benetton driver Nino Farina incurred his third penalty of the season - the first driver to do so.

"If a driver is given five or more penalties in the same season, we will look at the driver's behaviour and the nature of the penalties he has been given, and if we feel that the penalties he has already received aren't a sufficient punishment, we may look to impose a points deduction or a one-race ban." Hayward said.

Farina is the only driver who has had three penalties so far this season - with two of them coming in the same session for impeding another driver's qualifying lap - with several drivers, including Juan Manuel Fangio, on two.

It is believed that there will be no 'black and white' rule for these further punishments, as each driver will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
SCHUMACHER BEATS ASCARI TO JEREZ POLE BY 0.2 SECONDS

Michael Schumacher will start on pole for the seventh time this season at the Circuito de Jerez, but the gap to the rest of the field was smaller than he usually enjoys.

Ferrari team mate Alberto Ascari, who has gone four races without scoring any Legend's Trophy points and lies 9th in the Driver's Championship, was just 0.209 seconds behind Schumacher, suggesting the battle at the front of the field could be closer than we have typically seen this season.

Juan Manuel Fangio was unable to put his Mercedes on the front row of the grid, with the Argentine - 13 points off Schumacher's championship lead - in third, just one-thousandth of a second slower than Ascari's time.

Lewis Hamilton, looking to get his championship challenge back on track after his first lap retirement in Austin, starts fourth, with Vettel, who caused the crash on the first lap and has subsequently been given a 20-second penalty for this race, in fifth.

Ayrton Senna completed a solid day for McLaren by qualifying sixth, with Graham Hill, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Jackie Stewart completing the top 10.

Schumacher currently holds a 9 point lead at the top of the Driver's Championship, but with Vettel's penalty to be applied after the race, the Red Bull driver will struggle to keep that gap as low as it is.

Fangio, who was unable to beat Schumacher off the line last time out in Austin, and then had no answer for the German's pace, will be encouraged by his pace in qualifying, nearly a second closer to the German than he was in the US.

In the relegation battles, Stewart's 10th - the third race in a row the BRM has qualified in the top 10 - gives him the opportunity for a solid finish that will provide daylight between him and the bottom five. The Scot has been unlucky on a number of occasions this season, including at the last race when, after running third for a large portion of the race, he was involved in a bizarre crash with Nelson Piquet that forced him to retire on the penultimate lap.

Niki Lauda posted his best ever grid position, qualifying 13th and giving himself the chance to score points for the third race in a row and to help both himself and the Brabham team fight their relegation battles.

Ascari set an early benchmark in his 1967 Ferrari.

Hamilton's last lap was his quickest, moving him up from 7th to what would end up being 4th on the grid.

Ferrari will be aiming to be the first team to score a one-two finish this season.

Fangio missed out on the front row by 0.001 seconds, but is in a good position to challenge the Ferraris during the race.

Schumacher did not enjoy the level of dominance he has become used to in qualifying, but still put his Ferrari on pole.
Hamilton 4th. Quite good, let's hope Hamilton gets a good style in the race.
reee, I missed a lot.

Michael Schumacher extended his lead at the top of the Driver's Championship with a dominant victory in difficult conditions at Jerez, Spain.

Lewis Hamilton kept his slim chances of a title challenge alive with second place, ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio who scored his fifth podium of the season.

After a tight qualifying session that suggested a close race at the top, the wet weather looked set to mix things up even more, but Schumacher showed his class and skill in the rain to claim a lights-to-flag win, finishing 48 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Sebastian Vettel - Schumacher's closest title challenger before the race, had a disappointing afternoon. The Red Bull crossed the line in 8th place, but was then demoted to 10th after his penalty for causing a collision with Hamilton in the previous race was applied.

The victory increases Schumacher's lead in the Driver's Championship to 23 points, whilst Ferrari put a small amount of daylight between themselves and McLaren at the top of the Constructor's Championship courtesy of Alberto Ascari's much needed 4th - his first points in five races.

The start of the race was a similar story to the last time out in Austin, with Schumacher unchallenged off the line and able to set about pulling out a gap to the rest of the field from the first lap. Ascari, meanwhile, held onto second place but was clearly struggling with the wet conditions, forming a train of cars behind him including Fangio, Vettel, Hamilton, Stewart, Senna and Prost.

It was Lewis Hamilton who was able to make the most of the difficult conditions and close racing, overtaking Vettel, Fangio and then Ascari to move up to second place after a handful of laps.

The wet weather also mixed up the race strategies, with some cars having to come in as early as lap 11 for new wet tyres, suggesting a two-stop race. Schumacher and Hamilton were two such drivers, but whilst the German was able to maintain his lead despite the stop, Hamilton dropped to sixth place behind the impressive Nino Farina, who had made his way up to fifth.

The remaining drivers pitted at the halfway stage, with Jackie Stewart driving another strong race having moved up to second place by the time he came in. Sadly for the Scot, it would be yet another DNF when he lost control of his BRM and crashed out on lap 22.

With Schumacher and Hamilton on their own out front, the main focus on the remaining laps was the battle for third between Fangio, Ascari, Senna, Prost and Clark, who were all within a few seconds of each other. The Circuito de Jerez provided plenty of overtaking opportunities, before Fangio emerged as the final podium finisher, with Ascari holding off a hard-charging Prost right down to the last corner for fourth place.

Further down, Nino Farina was the only driver in the bottom half of the table to finish in the top 10. His 9th was promoted to 8th after Vettel's penalty, boosting his - and Benetton's - chances of avoiding relegation at the end of the season.

Ferrari had locked out the front row for only the second time this season.

The tricky conditions caught out a number of drivers, including Emerson Fittipaldi, who would go on to receive his third penalty of the season for ignoring blue flags.

Damon Hill's championship challenge is all but over after his early crash.

Having got off the line slowly, Hamilton pulled off several overtakes to make his way up to second.

Jackie Stewart - seen here fighting with Fangio for fifth place - had a race that typified his season, excellent pace...

...but another DNF.

Hamilton came out behind Nino Farina after his pit stop, but quickly got out of the Italian's spray and past him for fifth.

Vettel and Farina make their pit stops.

Prost and Senna re-ignited their famous rivalry...

...a battle that Prost would win after Senna ran wide and let the Frenchman through.

Schumacher claims his third win of the season and reaffirms his status as the favourite for the Driver's Championship.
Hamilton finished 2nd, that's an amazing job.
