Congrats to Ferrari and Schumi, they well deserved this for a domination, we will see what next season could bring.
ASCARI TAKES MALAYSIA POLE AFTER SCHUMACHER PENALTY

Alberto Ascari will start the Malaysian Grand Prix from pole position, after Michael Schumacher was demoted three places for impeding in qualifying.

Schumacher had set the fastest time of the session with a 1:34.093, over eight-tenths quicker than anybody else, but was handed the penalty after being judged to have blocked Nelson Piquet during one of his flying laps.

The penalty results in Ascari claiming his first ever Legend's Trophy pole position, and the first time he has out-qualified his team mate all season.

Juan Manuel Fangio will start alongside Ascari on the front row of the grid, with Sebastian Vettel third, and Schumacher - who wrapped up the Driver's Championship at the last race in Brazil - demoted to fourth.

But while Ascari's first pole of the season was a talking point, most of the focus this weekend will be on the drivers and teams battling to avoid being relegated to Division 2 next season - with both the Driver's and Constructor's Championships already having been won.

Nino Farina was the quickest of the bottom seven drivers, his 11th place being promoted to 10th thanks to an incident between Piquet and Lauda that gave Piquet a three-place grid penalty. Lauda himself was given a five place penalty for the same incident in which he drove into the back of Piquet heading into turn 1, the Austrian will start the race in 16th, with the penalty potentially damaging his chances of survival.

Jody Scheckter is bottom of the Driver's Championship and needed a good session, but will start the race on the back row of the grid.

Fangio mistimed his opening run and was held up badly by Scheckter, who was also on a flying lap.

Alain Prost once again performed well in his Renault, he starts sixth.

Piquet and Lauda have a coming together at turn one, an incident that saw both drivers receive penalties.

Vettel suffered an engine fire on his penultimate run, but had already set a time quick enough for fourth (promoted to third after Schumacher's penalty).

Fittipaldi starts last on the grid for the fourth race in a row - final times on the left.
FANGIO WINS CHAOTIC AND CONTROVERSIAL MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX

Mercedes' Juan Manuel Fangio took victory at an action-packed Malaysian GP which featured more fuel-related issues.

Fangio finished over 35 seconds clear of Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, with Michael Schumacher concluding the podium of a race that saw just six cars cross the finish line.

Just like in Hockenheim and Montreal, several cars ran out of fuel on the last lap, but here in Sepang the problem was even worse as five cars ran out of fuel earlier in the race while trying to head to the pits for their scheduled stop.

Before the fuel tanks became a talking point, though, there was plenty more action on track. Alberto Ascari, who had inherited pole position after Michael Schumacher was penalised for impeding in qualifying, kept his lead for the opening lap, with Schumacher himself making the most of a good start off the line to move himself up to second.

However, it all went wrong for Ferrari when the two drivers
crashed into each other at the start of lap two, Schumacher's attempted overtake proving disastrous, and sending both the red cars to the back of the field.

This gave Fangio the lead, ahead of Prost, Vettel, Hamilton and Damon Hill - the top five that would remain in this order until the pit stops on lap 16.

This is when the fuel problems started rearing their ugly head.

Whilst some cars - including Vettel and Hill - were able to make their way safely to their pit boxes, others ran out of fuel on the pit entry, including a very frustrated Lewis Hamilton, who suffered his seventh retirement of the season. Jack Brabham, Fernando Alonso, Mika Hakkinen and Jody Scheckter also failed to make the pit lane, a list that includes three of the drivers fighting against relegation.

Alain Prost had his own pit lane problems, as he was forced to spin his Renault in order to avoid Jack Brabham's ailing Brabham car, and the Frenchman was lucky not to hit the wall and retire from the race.

The Ferraris, meanwhile, were doing their best to carve their way through the field and try to salvage something from their earlier crash.

On lap 22, six laps after the others, Fangio came in for his stop, reducing his lead over Vettel to just five seconds. But just when we thought we could be in for a grandstand finish, several teams brought their cars in for an emergency stop on the last lap of the race when they realised they didn't have enough fuel to make it to the end.

Fangio did have enough fuel in his Mercedes, and took just his second win of the season - his first after the opening round at Spa. Others weren't so lucky, with Ascari, Hulme, Lauda, Fittipaldi, Hawthorn and both Lotus cars stopping on track on the final lap.

The LTO were quick to reassure drivers, teams and fans that different versions of the affected tracks will be used for next season, ensuring the fuel problems won't happen again, but that was scant consolation to the drivers battling to avoid dropping to division 2 who failed to finish the race.

The only driver of the bottom seven in the championship to score points in Sepang was Denny Hulme, who bagged two points for ninth, which means that five drivers are separated by just four points heading into the final race of the season. The two points for Cooper increase their margin over Brabham in the Constructor's Championship, with Benetton needing a very strong race in Suzuka to stand any chance of surviving.

The Ferraris enter the first corner in first and second place, with Fangio just behind.

Schumacher goes for the overtake at the start of lap two...

But it all goes horribly wrong and they both end up in the gravel.

Fangio inherited the lead, and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the race.

The Ferraris try to move their way back up the order, with Ascari doing a better job initially.

Most of the cars were on a one-stop strategy, but not all of them had enough fuel to make it to the pits.

Damon Hill avoided all the action around him to finish a solid fourth.

Fangio was able to retain his lead after his late scheduled stop.

Vettel makes an emergency stop on the last lap, but keeps second place with others behind him having to do the same.

Ascari's miserable race concluded with him being one of several cars to run out of fuel on the last lap, and was classified in eighth.

Fangio's win guarantees him second place in the Driver's Championship.
Not bad for Vettel. 2nd!
Lewis's season wasn't the best, hopefully he'll bounce back strongly next season.

SCHUMACHER STORMS TO POLE IN SOAKING SUZUKA

Michael Schumacher will start the season finale on pole position after setting the fastest time on a wet Suzuka circuit.

Sebastian Vettel forms an all-German front row of the grid, with Lewis Hamilton and Jim Clark qualifying third and fourth respectively.

Juan-Manuel Fangio, who will finish second in the inaugural Legend's Trophy Driver's Championship, behind Schumacher, starts fifth, with Alberto Ascari sixth.

With weather and track conditions constantly changing throughout the session, it was important to get out and set a lap time at the right time, and that's exactly what Schumacher did, posting a time 1.344 seconds quicker than anyone else could.

Mika Hakkinen also got his timing right, the relegation-threatened Finn starts eighth place - the highest of the seven drivers battling for survival - but will need to finish at least 6th to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

Jody Scheckter also impressed, qualifying in the top ten for the first time this season, but the Benetton driver will need to convert his tenth place start into at least a fifth place finish or he will be driving in Division 2 next season.

Driver's Championship Standings - the relegation battle:

14) Emerson FITTIPALDI (Red Bull) 27
15) Kimi RAIKKONEN (Cooper) 26
16) Nino FARINA (Benetton) 16
17) Niki LAUDA (Brabham) 15.5
----
18) Jack BRABHAM (Brabham) 15
19) Mike HAWTHORN (BRM) 14
20) Denny HULME (Cooper) 12
21) Mika HAKKINEN (Mercedes) 9
22) Jody SCHECKTER (Benetton) 6

Nino Farina qualified 12th, but the other drivers aiming for survival are further down the field and need a combination of skill and luck to score any points in tomorrow's race.

For the Constructors, Brabham's 20th and 22nd starting positions mean the eight points they need to outscore Cooper by to avoid relegation will be difficult to obtain. Benetton, meanwhile, had a much stronger session with 10th and 12th, but need to outscore Cooper by 16 points and Brabham by 9 in order to survive.

FULL QUALIFYING RESULT

1) Michael SCHUMACHER (Ferrari)
2) Sebastian VETTEL (Red Bull)
3) Lewis HAMILTON (McLaren)
4) Jim CLARK (Lotus)

19) Emerson FITTIPALDI (Red Bull)
20) Niki LAUDA (Brabham)
21) Denny HULME (Cooper)
22) Jack BRABHAM (Brabham)

Raikkonen struggled to 16th in his Cooper, but the British team are favourites to survive relegation with both Brabhams behind him on the grid.

Hakkinen was impressive for 8th, but needs a strong race to avoid relegation.

Vettel failed to score any pole positions all season, but was the only driver to qualify in the top 10 in every race.

Jim Clark set a quick first lap, which was good enough for 4th place.

Schumacher was once again the class of the field.

Heavy rain prevented anyone improving their times at the end of the session, final times on the left.
Hamilton doing great job, hopefully tomorrow can be really exciting to end the S1. ;)
Not impressed..

JAPANESE GP: ASCARI WINS AS HAKKINEN AND BRABHAM SURVIVE

Alberto Ascari has won an extraordinary Japanese Grand Prix, but it was Mika Hakkinen and Jack Brabham who stole the headlines.

Ascari's victory - which came after both Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel crashed out from the lead - is his third of the season, finishing over 23 seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Lewis Hamilton took second place after Juan Manuel Fangio had to pit late on with a throttle problem, the Argentine making it home in third.

But despite an imperious drive by Ascari to conclude a strong final few races of the season, it was Mika Hakkinen who impressed the most on the Suzuka circuit. The Finn converted his eighth on the grid to a superb fourth place finish to gain more than the points he needed to ensure his survival, and will compete in the top division once again next season.

Further down the field, Jack Brabham finished eighth to put himself in the other safe spot at the tail end of the Driver's Championship, pushing his teammate Niki Lauda into the relegation places.

The race started with Schumacher and Vettel on the front row of the grid, and despite a lot of pressure from the Red Bull, they maintained their positions for the opening few laps.

Meanwhile, further back, Denny Hulme outbraked himself for the hairpin on lap one, hitting the back of his teammate Raikkonen, who in turn hit Lauda, sending the Austrian into the wall and out of the race. Lauda would now have to hope that the drivers behind him in the championship didn't score enough points to overcome his slender advantage over them.

For the rest of the field, the opening exchanges became as much about keeping it on the island as about gaining positions, a feat several cars were unable to manage on the slippery-but-drying circuit. Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, Mike Hawthorn and Ayrton Senna were just some of the drivers who lost control of their cars - mainly at the "S" curves - demoting them to the back of the field.

But whilst those drivers were able to continue racing, the same could not be said for Michael Schumacher when he lost control of his championship-winning Ferrari going into turn one. The German - who had already wrapped up the Driver's Championship - became the race's second retirement as his car reversed into the tyre barrier at speed.

Schumacher's retirement gave Sebastian Vettel the lead, but he became the second German to retire at turn one when he did a carbon copy of Schumacher's crash just three laps later.

Denny Hulme, meanwhile, had retired with a suspension failure, confirming his relegation.

Hamilton was now leading the race, but had both Fangio and Ascari less than a second behind him, and the three of them engaged in a classic battle for supremacy in the final race of the season.

Perhaps the biggest story of the race, however, was unfolding just behind them, as Mika Hakkinen had made the most of a good start and the retirements around him to move his Mercedes up to fourth place. Hakkinen needed to finish at least sixth to survive relegation, and looked like he had every chance of doing just that as he was able to keep the fast Alain Prost's Renault behind him.

Hamilton was the first car to pit, on lap 12, and looked to make his fresher tyres work to keep himself ahead of his main rivals. But with the car much heavier with fuel, his lap times suffered, and when Ascari and Fangio came in for their stops two laps later, they both came out ahead of the McLaren.

By this stage, Damon Hill had got past Hakkinen and into fourth, with Fernando Alonso, who was once again driving a superb recovery from a poor grid position, yet to stop and up into sixth place.

Ascari was able to build a five-second lead over Fangio, and, despite a wobble with three laps to go, kept his lead in tact for the remainder of the race. Fangio was looking good for second until a throttle issue forced him to pit on the penultimate lap, bringing Hamilton up to second.

Meanwhile, Hakkinen continued to keep up the pace, and brought his Mercedes home in fourth to guarantee his survival. Jack Brabham, who had a quiet race, was also safe thanks to his eighth, but Nino Farina, despite his tenth, was relegated.

In the Constructor's Championship, Benetton didn't score the 16 points they required to give them a chance of safety, and the Brabham team will be joining them through the trap door to Division 2 next season, falling just 3.5 points short of Cooper.

NEWS ROUND-UP

The Alonso-Ascari swap has been confirmed, following Benetton's relegation from Division 1. Alberto Ascari - who drove for Ferrari last season - is free to transfer to Renault as there are no longer any other affiliated teams in Division 1, with Fernando Alonso moving in the opposite direction.

----

Meanwhile, another swap that has taken place for next season is between Kimi Raikkonen and Emerson Fittipaldi. Raikkonen was keen to move to another team after being unhappy with the performance of the Cooper car, and has found a seat at Red Bull, who themselves were looking to replace the disappointing Fittipaldi. The Brazilian was involved in more crashes and accrued more penalties than any other driver, but was able to finish above Raikkonen in the Driver's Championship.

----

Jack Brabham is reportedly in talks with BRM about driving for the British team next season. Brabham is currently without a seat after his team were relegated, whilst BRM are looking for someone to fill their second seat that has been vacated by the relegated Mike Hawthorn.

----

Finally, it has been confirmed that all 22 drivers must display their Legend's Trophy number on their car next season, not the number that the car they are using adopted during it's Formula One career. Damon Hill, Lewis Hamilton and the two Lotus cars all changed their numbers towards the end of last season, but the rest of the field must now follow suit from the opening race in Melbourne. Michael Schumacher, the reigning driver's champion, has the option of using the number 1 instead of the number 3 he used last season.
Nice season summary!
