Hi People. Just got a new PC (AMD FX55 with 1GB RAM and ATi Radeon X800, very nice too!!) I've been busy copying all my old games over and managed to get GP4 up and running on the 9.6 patch with a frame rate of 60 fps with everything on, which is nice. However, I am struggling with the wheel setup - have got the basics there with the wheel working on the X/Y axes only, but still notby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4

Hi ppl, I am just about to fork out for a new monitor and am tempted to go for an LCD/TFT model rather than a clunky old CRT. I remember reading some discussion here questioning the quality / longevity of the flat screen jobs in relation to conventional CRT. Can anyone let me know whether this is still the case or whether they are now comparable quality both in terms of graphical capabilby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Enough carping people. Toca RD 1 was a truly dreadful game in terms of the driving "feel", which is what really matters to everyone here - or should be! I've played the demo, and the handling and physics seem good, although they haven't built in the wheel support yet, so I've had to make do with the keys. But it is a big step forward from TRD 1, where the carsby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Nascar 2003 is a great game in terms of physics, but of course all but two of the tracks are variations of your basic oval shape, which is pretty tedious for most people (though some like it) Still a great game though - I still play it regulalrly six months after I bought it. Re the Jag - I have a feeling that with nitrous oxide the engine would have been totally buggered after one or two runs. Otherwise everyone would have it fitted as standard for overtaking!! (nice) I quite like the new show and Clarkson is good, although a little too opinionated sometimes. I wish it didn't go on for an hour on a Sunday night though, as my wife always gives me grief about wby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Glyn, I see your point, but to review any game you have to understand and measure how well it meets its main criteria For example, if you were reviewing an FPS, the game might have lovely graphics and tons of interesting weapons, but if there is no plot development, no atmosphere, and no enemy AI, it would get a very poor score. With driving games, its the physics that make or break the game,by AliMurray - Off-Topic
PC Gamer is the number one PC Games magazine in the UK (and USA, I think - not sure about Europe) I have huge respect for their opinions on most genres of games, but they do seem to give what I feel are inaccurate reviews of driving games. They seem to fail to understand what we all know makes a great driving game, that real driving "feel". By that I mean the transfer of weight of thby AliMurray - Off-Topic
I'd be interested in people's opinions about the following: I have a huge collection of music, both vinyl and CD - however, I am a lazy b*gger and never put my CDs back in their cases, so almost all of them are scratched. All of the music I download is therefore stuff I already legally own, so if I am caught, then I can prove I own the copyright. If this is a legitimate defence (whby AliMurray - Off-Topic
I got it too, as have many people I work with who have broadband. The symptom is that your PC reboots itself after about 2 mins every time u switch it on, with an RPC Service Error. I was pretty shocked to get this as I am very careful about my internet activities and never open any attachments, etc. Apparently this can bugger up your pc without you doing anything, which is a pretty sorry statby AliMurray - Off-Topic
I have a 600k NTL connection and its pretty good. Only problem I have is that for some reason if I leave winMX open downloading (or uploading) mp3 files overnight, my connection goes down, and I have to do a hard reset of my set top box to fix it. apart from that and a slowdown of their email servers in the early evening, they are ok. Not really a conspiracy theory though, is it? - unless you are suggesting someone at least 80 years old went to considerable lengths to replicate the same pattern of events - now that would be paranoid! I'd call it more a series of co-incidences. Just call me Mr Pedantic. Aliby AliMurray - Off-Topic
I am now 35 (on Tuesday, thank you for asking) , and I haven't had to sit an exam since I was 18. Life is goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddd! Aliby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Yes, I know its authentic, but! The whole racing experience with ovals is inherently dull. There is just very little to get excited about turning slight variations of left over and over again. It's just such a crying shame, as the underlying physics engine for the game is way, way ahead of games such as Total Immersion Racing and Toca Race Driver. Bought this at Game yesterday for just £15. Was very pleasantly surprised by the physics and handling, which are excellent- very authentic driving and handling feel - awesome feeling of controlling a very heavy, very powerful car. Shame about the tracks though - only 2 are not ovals, but these 2 are great fun. Anyone know if you can download other tracks for this game?by AliMurray - Off-Topic
Well, the adaptor arrived today *cheers* but it doesn't seem to work *boos* I reconnected my wheel to the usb adapter, rebooted, went into control panel/game controllers with fingers crossed, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to calibrate or detect any kind of movement from the wheel. Anyone have any suggestions, or do i send it back to where it came from? Aliby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
I am an MS FF man, right handed, but my rubber has come away on the left side (I like to be different!) The wheel is many years old, from when it first came out in about 99 i think, and it just seems indestructable - no loss of force or any deterioration at all. And unlike everything else from Microsoft, I haven't been forced to upgrade it for no good reason six months later! I've gby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Thanks for the tip people - had a look and found what I'm after on good old Maplin's web site - www.maplin.co.uk The item code is UA22Y - Analogue to USB converter - comes to about £10 inc p & p. I have one on order - will let you know when it arrives. Cheers, Aliby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
I have a fairly high spec PC: p4, 2.54Ghz 512MB RAM GF4 4600Ti All pretty much top spec stuff, and it plays GP4 at a perfectly adequate 26fps with almost all graphics options on. However, I've seen posts from ppl with lower spec kit getting much higher frame rates with similar graphics options, so I naturally feel Frame Rate Envy. I wonder whether my wheel is making the difference - I haby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
Vader, I drive a BMW 535 - you don't have to tell me about German precision and quality. The car is simply every teutonic virtue rolled into one - a beautifully engineered machine and an absolute joy to drive.by AliMurray - Off-Topic
Tricky one this! One man (or woman)'s strong leadership is another man's arrogance, just as one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. It all depends on your own perspective. I think history will show that invading Iraq was the right thing to do, although I admit that there is no proof of that yet. I think it is safe to assume that Blair and Bush have the intellby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Well, I got myself up and running, only to find that Codemasters have shut down CMN as of 1/5/03, which is a crying shame, as it means no online play, which was without doubt the best aspect of 1NSANE. Alright it was very buggy, and any game was doomed to terminal dropout after about 15 mins, but boy, those 15 mins were fun. The game would be great singleplayer still if it weren't for theby AliMurray - Off-Topic
Fantastic News! There's a big spread on it in the June issue of PC Gamer - looks awesome. It might even be enough to make me put my steering wheel away for a while. Aliby AliMurray - Off-Topic
People, I was browsing through my CD collection at the weekend, looking for a clipart CD, when I spotted my 1nsane CD I remembered what an amazing game it was, especially multiplayer, and I have got broadband since I used to play it, so reckoned I should give the multplayer side another go. Incidentally, how did Codies forget all they knew about physics and handling when they wrote this gameby AliMurray - Off-Topic
I can't work out if I'm lazy or stoopid, but all the above looks very complicated. Is there such a thing a a full set of 2003 cars with an eejit-proof self installer that I can just double click on and magically update everything? If not, I'll stick to the 2001 cars to be on the safe side. Aliby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
"thats just it, Codemasters never said it was gona be the worlds most realsitc game. The communities said that. The communties hyped it up way more than codemasters did. Morbid, thankls for the explanation - makes perfect sense, and now you've said it, I can see it happening at race starts. It also (i think) explains one other slightly annoying feature of the game, where if I spin on a corner, and end up facing the wrong way, all the other cars queue up behind me, nudging me over and over again. I guess their AI isn't smart enough to go right round meby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
Ladies and Gents. To those who haven't tried it, I would suggest that having auto gears on is actually harder than off. Slamming down manually through the gears at the end of a long straight is a damned effective way of slowing the car down and keeping control. Also, as you get to learn a circuit, you get a feel for the right gear to take a corner in, and by not changing up you can be surby AliMurray - Grand Prix 4
Yes, I know the game isn't much good, but I want to play all the cars and tracks in the hope I might find a car with decent handling that isn't available as standard. I'm sure no-one here remembers a band called "The Police", but they were quite big when I was a little boy. One of their obscure album tracks "Does Everyone Stare" had the lyric: "Never noticed the size of my feet, Till I kicked you in the shins." Deep............. Aliby AliMurray - Off-Topic
