It depends on what you do, and in your example above, you'd struggle to tell at all. I'm doubt there'd actually be any difference at all. Best bet is to look at an i5 example (along with the new 800 series of i7s) and decide off the back of that. If gaming is going to be your only intensive task, then stick to i5 or Q9xxx, as i7 would be money spent for very little.

In the Hexus review, the i5 is identical to the i7s at 1680x1050 (and above), but that will depend on the game (the more graphics intensive a game is, the less CPU-bound it will be). For Football Manager or the likes, CPU power is king. For rFactor 2 the CPU won't make much difference at this end of the scale.

Ok thanks for clearing that up Gav :)

I do actually play alot of Football Manager, can't wait to pick up 2010 ;)

I suppose when it comes to ordering it all in two weeks time I will just have to go over all the options and see how much I want to spend, cheers for the help!

I've ordered also one copy at the pre-order day here in germany (I was one of the lucky ones who had the chance to get one at amazon.de) and finally, after 3 months of waiting and enjoying the RC 7100, the time has come. I can't wait... ;)

Right last final check pretty please Gav :)

Intel Core i5 2.66GHZ OEM
Coolmaster Hyper TX3 CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GA-P55-US3L Intel P55 Socket 1156
Patriot Viper 4GB PC3-10666 1333MHZ
XFX ATI Radeon HD4870 1GB DDR5
500GB Samsung Spinpoint F3 Sata II
650W TX Corsair PSU
Windows 7 64bit (Arrived)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010 OEM

You cannot see anything bad there right? I think I have worked it out lol.

Decided in the end after thinking about it Core i5 will be more than enough, the only CPU intesive game I really play is Football Mananger and it will be more than enough for general multi-tasking in Win 7. Also decided to get another 4870 like I had before it fried but this time with 1GB onboard, as it should help out with 1920 x 1200 resolution. Like yourself I only really play racing games such as iRacing.

Don't see why it wont play rFactor 2 when its released and maybe the Codemasters F1 game (If its not a pile of crap ;))

Edit:// I have run out of money for the minute so I will put another 4GB in to make it 8GB when I get paid again next.

LOL, that's changed a bit. No idea on the heatsink or the RAM, but if you want to trim it further, a 500W PSU ought to be sufficient.

Ok cheers.

I know it has changed a bit but I thought whats the point in getting the best setup just because I can when I dont need it! Doubt I would ever own a game that even maxed the 5870 out ;) Money can be spent better elsewhere :)

Ultimate is now a waste of time 95% of the time. It had it's use with Vista (for connecting to a domain and using Media Center), but with Windows 7, Pro has taken over Ultimate in that Pro is an upgrade of Home Premium (as in it has all the features HP has, but adds domain support and the likes). The only point in buying Ultimate now is if you need Bit Locker.

but seeing as I have Vista ultimate doesnt that mean I can only upgrade to 7 Ultimate?

I thought I read that somewhere? :S

Nope. You just won't be able to do an in-place installation - you'll have do a clean install.

I'm thinking of buying this OS. I have Vista Home Premium right now, what version should I be looking at? Do I buy a full install or an upgrade? Will it install over the top of my Vista, how does that work?

Win 7 Home Premium will install over the top of Vista Home Premium, providing you use the right disk (if you currently run 32-bit Vista, you can't upgrade to 64-bit 7).

Frankly, that's not recommended anyway. It's always best, by some margin, to do a clean install.

Whether it's worth it or not... well. If you've no issues with Vista, I wouldn't bother personally. Win 7 is basically just a tweaked version of Vista, so if you're happy with the way things are, unless you can get it for cheap, it won't make that much difference. You missed the boat on that one. If you were tempted you ought to have grabbed it while the pre-order was up (around half-price). It's going up again soon (I've read that when current stock goes and I've also read that it's at the start of January, so not sure which it is).

If you've got a slow or old system though, 7 does scale better, so it would be much easier to justify.

just installed win7 on my vaio that i got from the school i work at. man this is a serious serious os. not to say vista wasnt but this is so much more responsive and i did a direct compariosn - so much quicker and i havent even gone deep into it yet.

installed gp4 first - what else - and it flies. from my experience, i would say it is whole lot "faster" than vista. thats not just what they advertise, thats from what i have seen. whole bunch of other stuff like xp mode which we are looking at in school (one day XP will die (2014 actually))

on another note - has people noticed the apple ads having a pop at windows lately? i have a macbook i use aswell (advantages of working in IT in a school!) but it doesnt do half of what 7 does imo. they should concentrate on what makes mac os good - not bash others. perhaps they wanna let slip under the radar the guest account bug (unbelievable how that got through - you log into guest account - then log out and back into you own account and all your data is deleted). if that was microsoft they wud be blasted.

Currys are selling laptops with XP at the moment, and other laptops with Windows 7.

If the two laptops are identical, which OS is better do you think? All I really want it to do is word process and play Football Manager. I know the general consensus is that 7 is a step up from Vista, but how does it compare to XP?

Laptops: 7

Netbooks: depends on the spec of the netbook, but 7 should be fine... Football Manager however, won't.

I stuck 7 on an Acer Aspire One netbook, with a horribly, horribly slow SSD, and even on that, the worlds slowest drive, it coped admirably - about as usable as XP.
