The term "pre-order" is an abuse of language and I don't like it. What order isn't already 'pre'?

The type of order in which the product is immediately shipped to you upon payment.

Wasn't it free when you already owned Vista? Or is that me just being an idiot?

That's you being an idiot. ;)

There is a certain period in time where a Vista license can be upgraded for free, but I'd imagine you'd need to get a license which comes with a voucher, rather than just picking up a random DVD - presumably old stock wouldn't be valid for it. I guess it would say on the box. I think it started at some point this month, but was certainly no earlier than last month.

generally now, if you buy a machine with vista preloaded, then you would more than likely get a voucher to upgrade to 7 for free or at a greatly reduced price like £5

Yeah, and just to clarify my own post, I've just checked and it's for machines only - you can't buy a Vista license off the shelf and upgrade it to Win 7 at a later date (well, you can, but only for the usual upgrade price I guess... if they ever offer the upgrade version this time).

will it ever make it onto ultimate steal (like Office 07) for students? I'm running it on my media center for one reason - interactive TV works, and Vista had issues with the motherboard (and the machine's lack of RAM)

So my early 2008 laptop with Vista Business in it would allow me to update to Windows 7 for a minimal fee? I'd seriously consider it just so I can cure my issues with compatibility.

No, only those laptops which came with a voucher, which would only be some sold in the past couple of months.

Ah... ok, I know what you're on about now! Recently all websites had banners saying "if you buy this or that computer by this date you get a free Windows 7 upgrade!"

students can get it for 30 quid from the ultimate steal thing. personally though, i'm only upgrading for media center's support of red button stuff on freeview. nothing else about it is any good for me. new taskbar is horrendously counter productive, and my 7 RC install is the first machine of mine to ever completely die from malware. (so much for improved security...)

In the UK I've heard that some etailers are going to be shipping the pre-orders a day early (the 21st) in an attempt to miss the post strikes, or at least minimise the effect of them.

If you visit dodgy sites or download questionable files, then you're going to get bitten. No amount of security will protect you.

Security wise, 7 is not really any different to Vista - it's just a few tweaks (as most of 7 is).
