I know it is not right, but here I define Sci-Fi as all that has something to with space, otherwise my list would be way too long:

Series:

1. Battlestar Galactica 2003
2. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC series)
3. Star Trek TNG
4. Star Trek TOS
5. Star Trek DS9
6. Star Treak Voyager
7. Space: 1999
8. Captain Future (80s animated series)
9. Prey (unfortunately cancelled after season 1 in 1998 leaving us with a cliffhanger)
10. Raumpatrouille Orion (German 60s series)

Series I cannot stand at all:

Star Trek Enterprise (good thing Roddenberry hadn't to see this)
Andromeda (good thing Roddenberry hadn't to see this)
Stargate (the first few were good than it got boring)
Babylon 5 (never got into it)

Movies:

1. Alien
2. Ice Pirates
3. Star Wars (Original Trilogy)
4. Star Trek - First Contact
5. Galactic Gigolo
6. Buck Rogers in the 24th Century
7. Event Horizon
8. Galaxy Quest
9. Starship Troopers
10. The Quiet Earth

Wow, 95% the same interrests,
Andromeda is horrible, I agree.
Stargate-fantastic film but bad series, agree as well.
B5, ok its difficult to get into it.
But Star Trek Enterprise??
What is so bad there? They explained a lot of things, the crew is fantastic (especially Pflox),
many great episodes like "In a Mirror Darkly"...

What is so bad about Star Trek-Enterprise?

Gene Roddenberry had a vision - a vison of a brighter future were common sense ruled and there was always a way to get together. Not national pride or patriotism, but tolerance and understanding were the keywords. It was about a global community living together in peace and harmony. It somewhat carried a spark of the ideals of The Enlightment. Star Trek Enterprise is completely different. For me it is propaganda in its ugliest form. It does not portray a global dream, it glorifies the American Dream. Why do you think the villians are called Suliban (=Taliban)? I am pretty sure Roddenberry would have hated its political orientation, since it completely lacks all philosophical background. Politics without ethics are dangerous.
Enterprise is aweful in every respect. Plus Captain Jonathan Archer looks like they actually wanted Harrison Ford but couldn't afford to pay him. Did I mention that I can't stabnd Harrison Ford either since that horrible piece of patriotic propaganda crap Air Force 1?

1. Terminator movies
2. Knight Rider

i HATE the Matrix movies, well i only saw the first one, but it was the biggest steaming pile of bum-chocolate i had ever seen, so didn't watch the other ones.

and i saw Lexx a few times, mainly cos there was a nice chick in it.

but i also don't like any of the Star Trek DS9 type series.

Quantum Leap was good in the 80's though.

OK, here goes for the TV series.

Red Dwarf - Yes, it's old, but it still makes me laugh. "Dwayne Dibley!" "Mr Fibble's very angry." ;)
Stargate SG1 - Channel 4 better start showing it soon so I got something good to watch on Sunday afternoons. :)
Star Trek TNG, DS9, Voyager. Enterprise was watchable, but I didn't get into it. DS9 I don't understand why it's never repeated like Voyager and TNG is.
Quantum Leap - good fun.
Sliders - not technically in space (at least, not all the time), but they did some fantastic things, and I want this repeated too!

Then there's the usual film ones...

Alien Series
Terminator Series
Star Wars Series
Star Trek Nemesis - the only one I've watched of the TNG films, and it's great IMHO.

Some unusual choices:

Galaxy Quest - saw it a couple weeks ago, and made me LOL several times! :)
Doctor Who - especially since the BBC revived it!

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10; indeed, it's a common requirement in fairy tales. If the human didn't have to overcome huge odds, what would be the point? Terry Pratchett - The Science Of Discworld

GPGSL S5 Race driver for IED.

O really? And what about Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country?
At first this film should be about joung Kirk and Spock, but after Fall of the Wall in east europe,
the scenario was changed to version like we know it today.
So they compared Klingons with Russia, Ukraine, Poland, east Germany .... And that isn't propaganda??
And where did you seen Harrison Ford there. As which Character? Indiana Jones, Han Solo or US President?
Anyway Archer is complete different person and one of the best starfleet captains in Star Trek

I'm going to add a new element here - books. Sci-Fi IMHO is best experienced when the consumer is given the chance to create the sheer expanse of it themselves, in the context of their own interpretations.

There's the classics ... George Orwell's "1984", Douglas Adams' "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" and Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" (N.B. If you have never read this, and have seen the film, read the book!! The film's a completely different storyline, even has some different characters).

I also love Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" and William Gibson's "Neuromancer" (a nice one for Vader, if you haven't already read it).

among usual suspects (2001 A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, everything with Alien in the title [kind of ;)]) Tarkowski's "Solaris" comes to mind. didn't watch Soderbergh's version (the one with Clooney) yet, but as i adore Stanislaw Lem's books, i think i'd like that one as well, though i expect it to be/feel totally different.
then there's also a south korean movie "save the green planet" which is excellent and made me laugh hard, though i don't know if it's exactly "science" fiction, but, well, it has aliens in it, sooo...:)

p.s. thanks for the "welcome back" in the dvd/movies thread, vader. but in fact, i visit here almost every day, despite not posting much...just like this friendly place somehow ;)

V rocked mate!!

was one of the best ever sci-fi programs ever made at the time.

you ought to try it if you get chance to see on dvd

Summary of the series

The story is set in contemporary times (the 1980s). Aliens who appear human arrive on Earth in a fleet of 50 huge saucer-like motherships, which park over all major cities. They appear to be friendly, seeking the help of humans to obtain chemicals needed to aid their ailing world. In return, the Visitors promise to share their advanced technology with humanity. The governments of Earth accept, and the Visitors gain considerable influence with authorities.

However, strange things are soon noted. Scientists find themselves facing increasing media hostility, and government restrictions on their activities and movements. Others, particularly those keen on examining the Visitors more closely, begin to disappear or face discredit. Noted scientists confess to subversive activities; some exhibiting other unusual behavior, such as suddenly demonstrating an opposite hand preference to the one they are known to have.

Journalist and TV cameraman Michael Donovan (Singer) sneaks aboard one of the Visitors' motherships and discovers that beneath their humanlike facade, the aliens are reptilian in nature, and carnivorous - preferring to eat live food, like rodents and birds. He learns from a Visitor named Martin that the story about the needed chemicals is merely a diversion. The true purpose of the Visitor's trip to Earth is to conquer and subdue the planet, steal all of the Earth's water and harvest the human race as food, leaving only a few as slaves and soldiers/cannon fodder for the Visitors' wars with other alien races. Donovan also discovers there are dissidents among the Visitors (known as the Fifth Column) who oppose their leader's plans.

Donovan gets some of this on tape, but just as this exposé is about to air, the broadcast is interrupted by a Visitor announcement, suddenly making Donovan a fugitive, pursued by both the police and the Visitors.

The scientists are persecuted - both to discredit them (as the part of the human population most likely to discover the Visitors' secrets) and to distract the rest of the population with a scapegoat upon whom they could focus their fears. Key human individuals are subjected to a special mind control process called "conversion", which turns them into the Visitors' pawns, leaving only subtle behavioral clues to this manipulation. Some other humans, on the other hand (including Mike Donovan's mother), willingly collaborate with the Visitors, seduced by their power.

A resistance movement is formed, determined to expose and oppose the Visitors as much as possible. The Los Angeles cell leader is Dr. Juliet (Julie) Parish. Donovan is later assimilated into the group. Soon, the members of the resistance strike their first blows against the Visitors. Meanwhile, the Visitors in the Fifth Column, lead by Martin, give aid to the Resistance.
