hello.

thought i'd start this thread for us to discuss any good movies or turkeys we've seen, any recommendations, or any good dvd's or boxsets you've got that you want to show off. the big blockbusters generally have their own threads, but this can just be about any film, big or small. also what movies are you looking forward to this year, and what were your highs and lows of last year?

to kick things off, i got this today, Top Gun 2 disc set from Play.com for only £3.99 (the single disc is £4.99), it's over £6 on ebay! ([www.play.com])

i've seen it many times, but fancied getting the special features.

RIP Jules, never to be forgotten. #KeepFightingMichael

Ain't been buying many DVD's latley, this is the last one I've got -

I liked the first Mission Impossible, 2nd I thought was a bit tiresome but I bought the boxset seen as it was £22 for MI:3 alone and £33 for all three, made more sense to get all three :)

I was pleasantly surprised with MI:3, I thought it would be more of the same as the first 2 but it wasn't! Actually enjoyed it! ;)

Looking forward to quite a few films next year! National Treasure 2, Rush Hour 3, I was looking forward to Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4) too next year, but after seeing the trailer I'm not so sure now...

/EDIT\ Oh yeah I'm really looking forward to Hot Fuzz :D

A classic, I think everyone when they reach the age of 20 who has finished school and 'been there, done that' can relate in some form or another to this film. A bit of a cult following, I think its awesome!

Where do I start - small 10 minute episodes, pant wettingly funny, ridiculously stupid and well worth the entire £8 it cost me hahahaah!

WARNING: only let smart people watch this, as, for example, you don't know the constituent parts of an egg and its yolk you won't understand many of the 'in-jokes' which, ironically being a science spoof, is acually reliant on a scientific audience!

Bless you Ants. Blants.

Peep Show rocks! :D Haven't watched it in a while though...

Recently watched Rocky Balboa and Night at the Museum too, Rocky Balboa was a very surprising one! I expected it too be awful, just Sylvester Stallone running out of money so brings back an old franchise... But after seeing it its actually damn good! The acting was pretty good all round, and it was a nice finale to the Rocky Series :) Saw Night at the Museum in the Cinema last week, which was pretty funny! More of a Kids movie really, but it was still a good laugh to watch, I enjoyed it myself :)

@ Dan, the first pic in your post isn't right i think, no hotlinking or sommet.

and Look Around You series 2 is available at HMV, for only £7.99 delivered (£12.99 at Play :o): [www.hmv.co.uk]

@ Ian the Woolman, when you say you're looking forward to movies next year, do you actually mean 2008? or do you mean this year?

@ LS, i saw a few of the Peep Show episodes when it was on tv, i though it was ace, but didn't know there were 3 series of it! i remember one bit where the character played by Webb was saying to Mitchell that he fancied some woman, and kept asking him if he had a stiffy or not, and then Mitchell got off with that fit bird.

Something thats always had me intrigued when you hear about box office takings etc, is how much do cinemas have to pay to show the lastest films?

Do they have to purchase the film outright?

or

Do they have to pay every time its screened?

Or

Do they have to tip up a percentage of the overall takings for the duration they have been showing it?

just wondered :)

I would have thought a Percentage of the takings, as its the most profitable way when a film is successful ;)

Actually come to think of DVD's, i've been watching a few episodes from this latley :)

doubt many of you have heard of it, used to be on around 1994 - 1996 on BBC2, Great program :D

Don't they still repeat that on ITV3 Ian? Along with Quantum Leap too. Really wanna watch the entire Sliders collection in one marathon, but don't have the money to fork out for the box sets. ;)

yep i know of Due South, i remember when it started and watched a few episodes, although wasn't a fan of it enough to watch them all. in his standup shows, Jack Dee made references to DS, because he looks like the main dude.

oh and watched a few snippets of the special features on the Top Gun dvds, it's a very nice presentation and they put a lot of extras on the 2 dvds, well worth it for £3.99!

it has tv spots and the music videos to Danger Zone, Take My Breath Away, another soppy song, and the Top Gun Theme by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens. Steve looks a right idiot with his silly gold suit, heeled-boots and hair bigger than Slash, playing guitar in a hangar while Harold plays piano.

Due South was and still is brilliant. I've got the theme tune MP3 on my PC. I used to watch it when it was on TV. I remember the end of the series and the announcement at the end of that episode that the next series would be on later that year. Well 10 ruddy years later I'm still waiting.

Just checked Amazon.co.uk and the first two series are £23.97 each, the third one £44.99, released just last year it seems. Might have to seriously consider the first two at least. Checking Play.com and Sendit.com for their prices.

//Edit// The Play.com prices are a joke! Series 1 - £44.99, Series 2 - £49.99 and Series 3 - £44.99. Sendit.com are S1 & S2- £23.39, S3 - £51.99.

It isn't often Amazon is remarkably cheaper than Play.com even taking delivery into account.
