Japanese Grand Prix Race BroadcastHello and welcome to coverage of the 2004 Japanese Grand Prix and penultimate race of the season. In qualifying yesterday we saw Williams continue their domination which we have seen for most of the season by locking out the front row for a third time running, however as usual Michael Schumacher is right behind the pair. Anyway down to the track where we have all five lights on…
And we’re away and Montoya is immediately past Barrichello into turn 1, whilst the rest of the field gets through cleanly
And now Schumacher is looking to do the same down into 130R…
And the German pulls off a very ballsy overtake
And now in clean air Montoya is beginning to take full advantage of it
De la Rosa is off at turn 1
But he manages to keep the car running and he stays in 22nd
But further up the road, it looks like his team mate and Button have had a coming together
Actually looking at the replay Button just runs wide in the first few corners, spinning his car
Only for Davidson to make the exact same mistake a few moments later
Now the two Arrows are fighting it out over 10th
But they hold position
Da Matta has run wide at turn 6
But he manages to keep it out of the barriers and rejoins behind Glock
Only for Glock to lose the back end at the next corner
He keeps the car running as he reverses out of the wall, albeit minus a front wing
But he’s off again two laps later in the same place as De La Rosa
However this time he’s well and truly stuck
And now Verstappen is off at turn 1…
…as well as Trulli
Looks as though Villenueve might be the culprit for Trulli’s spin by looking to overtake him on the inside
Which no doubt forced the Italian wide meanwhile Verstappen appears to have gone off on his own accord
Verstappen continues in 17th
Whilst Trulli shares Glock’s fate
Coulthard is looking for a way past Leinders down into Spoon…
But he has to slot back into order as they exit the corner
Only to have another go in 130R
But the Scot cannot find a way past
We have another in the turn 1 gravel trap, this time it’s Mark Webber!
And he to joins the growing list of retirees
Meanwhile our new champion is falling behind Montoya and Schumacher at a vast rate of knots, it won’t be long before he has McNish for company
And Fisichella is facing the wrong way in the middle of the ‘S’ Curves
Seems he made the same mistake as Button and Davidson did earlier, the drivers are really struggling in the first sector today…
Anyway with 10 down here are the current standings
Villenueve seems to have quite a bit of pace on him today…
But Schumacher has even more
That’s a Toyota running through the gravel trap
And with a bit of logical thinking it’ll be Da Matta who has dropped back behind his team mate
Zonta is the one to kick start the pitstops as he’s in from 8th
And Montoya has also pitted from the lead, rejoining in 6th
Meanwhile McNish has Barrichello in his sights now
Whilst Montoya is also under pressure from Da Matta
And the Brazilian is ahead before they even reach the corner, might that give Schumacher a chance at the lead
Apparently not, as he rejoins just as Montoya enters turn 2
And now Barrichello is in, a lap after McNish…
… and the Williams team manage to get him back out comfortably ahead of McNish
And back in turn 1 we have another off into the gravel!
But he keeps the engine ticking
And the mistake puts Lotterer into 8th and into the points
Before Verstappen sneaks past on the back straight
That cannot be good
And indeed that is quite a fire and unfortunately for Coulthard, that has spoiled his chances of getting past Leinders this lap
And it’s Zonta who is the unlucky one here, he pulls off the track very close to the pits
And the slow moving Arrows has cause a bit of confusion in the final chicane as Button and Sato run into the back of Fisichella
However with the demise of Zonta that is a double DNF for Arrows
Meanwhile Coulthard has run wide on the Dunlop Curve
Dropping him down behind Wirdheim and into 15th
There’s another beached in the gravel, Fisichella is out of the race as well
Meanwhile Verstappen is having a look up the inside of the Leinders into turn 1…
And he makes it
And now Raikkonen is next in line to have a go at the German…
He’s also through
And right off the back of that Leinders is into the gravel…
…and into a spin
Lucky for Leinders he just manages to keep his BAR off the racing line
And he gets going again in 14th
Now time for some standings
Looks like Heidfeld is having another adventure into the gravel trap at turn 1
Which allows Da Matta into 6th
And Verstappen is also going off road
But he holds position
Now that Barrichello has gone, McNish is now under pressure from Villenueve
Meanwhile we have another retirement in turn 1 as Sato is forced to retire from his home grand prix
And a few laps later Couthard joins him, seems the drivers are having a lot of trouble negociating turn 1
But Button seems to have had trouble at turn 9 and he is also out
He simply ran wide and couldn’t keep the car out of the barrier
And Montoya has spun it! He’s lost it in the Dunlop Curve!
And that error has gifted Schumacher the lead!
He drops back down to 5th, just ahead of Da Matta
But maybe not for long…
… and indeed he isn’t, Da Matta squeezes past in 130R
But a few laps later both he and Heidfeld easily cruise past Da Matta…
And it looks like he has a problem! Can he make it back to the pits…
… that’ll be a no, a water leak ends his race
Now Heidfeld is looking to get past Montoya…
…and he makes it
But he immediately pits
And we have another slow moving car, this time it is McNish
And he parks it right on the racing line in 130R, he falls victim to suspension failure
Now Raikkonen has become the latest turn 1 victim
Barrichello is now into the pitlane from 2nd place
He re-emerges in 4th
Davidson is looking for a way past Wirdheim
And he goes past the Swede
But Davidson ducks immediately into the pitlane
Whilst Wirdheim is immediately into the gravel
Leinders is in from 8th
Whilst Wirdheim might be on for some points here as he’s in 9th with all his stops completed
Montoya’s in…
But Heidfeld holds position
And that’s exactly what McLaren wanted, Verstappen is beached at turn 1 which puts Wirdheim in the points
Schumacher and Villenueve are into the pits
And whilst Schumacher retakes the lead, Barrichello moves back ahead of Villenueve
And the top three are all very close together as the race enters its final stages
De La Rosa is in from 7th…
Which puts Leinders into the points for the first time this season
And Wirdheim into 6th, and oncourse for his best ever finish
Meanwhile missed by the cameras Villenueve has gotten past Barrichello, that’ll be an excellent result in his teams home race
Anyway with all the stops done, let’s have the final round of standings
Villenueve is really shifting, can he catch up to Schumi?
Heidfeld takes a trip through the gravel
But no one is around the capitalize
Also unseen by the cameras as well Wirdheim has fallen back into 7th, but that would still be his best ever finish in F1
Meanwhile Schumacher is on his final lap but he’s coming up on traffic…
And he’s been held up very badly there which has allowed Villenueve to catch right up…
But he has a big enough gap going into the final chicane
And Michael Schumacher wins the Japanese Grand Prix
