F1 2004 Hungarian Grand Prix - Race

Welcome back to Hungary. Yesterdays qualifying session saw Jacques Villeneuve take pole position in the rain. Now the rain is gone and the forecast is for a completely dry race. Can Villeneuve win or will someone else get the job done?

We are underway in Hungary

Villeneuve and Schumacher battle at the front....looks like there's a crash at the back

I'm pretty sure Sato isn't meant to be facing that way

Da Matta is out

Sato is too

Anthony Davidson will also retire

Raikkonen has damage and will need to pit

It looks like Da Matta ran into Sato

Before Zonta smashed into the back of Davidson

Trulli has spun

He's wide again

2 spins in one lap.....get a grip Jarno

Villeneuve sets a fastest lap

Great move down the inside by Button

Hang on! Schumacher is down the inside and into the lead

The German then sets a fastest lap

Coulthard looks to get past Alonso

And he's through

Zonta runs wide

Another fastest lap for Schumacher

Webber seems to be having problems

He's holding up the Jordan

Alonso runs wide

So does Webber

They are both down the order now

Webber has a water leak, that explains his lack of pace

He's out of the race

Zonta spins

The top 8

A new fastest lap for Schumacher

Alonso is having an awful race, one of the Jordans has passed him

No points for Rubeno today, that's his engine gone

An Alonso train

The Renault has got past Alonso

A new fastest lap for Schumacher

Alonso has spun it. Deary me. Could this be his last Mclaren race?

Timo Glock has spun too, did Barrichello put down some oil during his engine blow?

Now Schumacher has spun!

And Trulli!!

Luckily for Schumacher, he still leads after the pitstops

The top 8 as it stands

Verstappen passes Coulthard

But he's spun it.

He'll rejoin in 8th

Zonta spins again

Verstappen sets a new fastest lap

Villeneuve is having a look down the inside of Schumi

He's done it!!!

Another fastest lap for Verstappen

Disaster! Villeneuve has a suspension problem and is out. That's cruel!

McNish pits for the 3rd time. He's the only 3 stopper today

Montoya is pulling off and is out! A double DNF for Williams

A new fastest lap for the Dutchman in the Ferrari

Michael Schumacher wins!

Coulthard is second

Button is 3rd

DOTD - I'm going to give it to Michael Schumacher. Without that spin he would have walked this race.

Top 8 for Mobile Users

1. Michael Schumacher
2. David Coulthard
3. Jenson Button
4. Andre Lotterer
5. Nick Heidfeld
6. Allan McNish
7. Giancarlo Fisichella
8. Jos Verstappen

Jordan Statement

Fantastic race from André, 4th place is awesome, well done! Bad luck for Kimi that he was involved in the start crash and had to pit for a new front wing, could have been some points for him, too.

Well done Couthard for the second place.
Mclaren Mercedes Statement

Absolutely brilliant by Jenson! It's a shame we are losing him at the end of the season, unless we can do a deal with Sauber, which is unlikely. I can confirm that Fernando Alonso has raced for the last time for Mclaren Mercedes. He was awful today and I feel it would be good to give Bjorn a go. We have a few targets in mind to partner Sebastian in next years car and we've put in an offer for Ryan Briscoe as a second reserve driver.

I think you'll find Sauber signed Button ;-) and also massive thanks for running these races in my absence John, it has kept things ticking along nicely :)

Latest driver signings will be up in a mo.

I knew it was one of the midfield teams :P No problem Twigster. If you ever need a race director let me know :)

BAR
Bas done pretty well, very close to points. However, Takuma had a lot of bad luck this time.
Verstappen and Alonso Sign for Ferrari
After losing out on their start driver Michael Schumacher to Williams earlier in the season today Ferrari confirmed that current McLaren driver Fernando Alonso will replace the German in the team. The Spaniard who has endured a very difficult season and who has just been demoted to test driver following another poor performance, looked set to spend next season on the sidelines before Ferrari approached him. Ferrari were not the only team interested in signing Alonso as his current employers had also put a bid in before withdrawing their offer. The team also confirmed that Verstappen will also be staying on another year to partner Alonso. The deals are reported to be worth £16.5m and £7m respectively.

Liuzzi to race in GP2
Rising star in F3000 Vitantonio Liuzzi will be racing in GP2 for Red Bull Racing Junior after signing a contract reported to be worth £7m. The deal means that there maybe a chance of seeing Liuzzi in Formula One in the near future in a Red Bull due to the sister team agreement. The team faced no opposition in signing the driver.

Lotterer Staying on at Jordan
After picking up his first points of the season with a strong fourth place at the Hungaroring it was today confirmed that Andre Lotterer will be racing for Jordan again in 2005. Again the team faced no opposition in signing the driver, acquiring his services for £2m

Briscoe Signs for McLaren
Current Toyota test driver Ryan Briscoe is set to become part of the McLaren outfit for the 2005 season. The Aussie today confirmed he had signed a contract worth £3m to test for the team in the upcoming season. A few other teams also showed interest including one from the newly formed GP2 series, but the offer from McLaren was apparently 'too good to turn down'.

Also just so we are all aware of the new rules:

Drivers who:

1) Have competed in at least 10 Formula 1 races

2) Drivers over the age of 30

3) And drivers who have won the GP2 drivers title

Cannot compete in the GP2 series.

However these rules do not apply to loaned drivers and driver who race for a F1 outfit which has a sister team in GP2.

Forgot to add this but do you think you could send me those 2004 TV graphics please John, as the only reason I don't use the correct ones is that I have the GPGSL graphics installed and I don't think they'd be very happy if I used them for the race coverages ;)

Arrows Statement

What a thrilling race. But our drivers didnt do that well. I mean we spent more time spinning than driving. Still just outside the points so I cant complain fully. We can take the advantages into the next race and try again for more points.
Yes we won!

Too bad Verstappen made some mistakes :( Could've been real something with double podium towards Williams with their double DNF! Still we won a little back at them :)

I also would like to welcome Fernando Alonso to the team, together with Felipe Massa he will make the drivers pairing for 2005 (Massa nr 3, Alonso nr 4) while Jos Verstappen will be going to test for us in 2005.

If you are racing, keep on racing and get some points!
