Sorry if it's a dumb question, but what are polys and why is it bad if there are lots of them?

Poly's are polygons (the square lines you can see in the video) the more there are, the more processing is needed,....there will definitely be "more than the usual amount of polys" in this track tho' ;)

So by processing, do you mean when it runs in game the computer has more to calculate in terms of graphics?

Yes, number of polygons combined with number and size of textures. I'm sure someone in here will give you a more technical explanation tho' ...I just use pc's to design on, I don't like to get bogged down with the technical stuff :) gildoorf & Paulo keep a strict eye on my polycount ....trust me...they need to ;)

Brilliant work! Is this for F1 Virtual, or your own project?

Richard have shown us what GP4 is still able to achieve.

Much better when it raises from the ground.

Just a reminder: It´s unlikely to have such a high level of details ingame.

But these work so far is surely the best preview of what it´s gonna be end version.

See what I mean.....always on my back about poly's ;)

Great care is being taken to keep the polycount down :P

...whilst retaining detail.....

Both really, I prefer detail modeling so I have 2 versions of this track on the go, a low-poly and a high poly, so I have a high-poly template I build the low-poly from.
My dat making skills aren't great, so I rely on paulo and gildoorf to provide the tracks. I have the same accurate approach to modeling as they do to dat creation, so I suppose it's a pretty good combination.
As far as the polycount goes, I don't see a problem with a HD version, although afaik there is a 150,000 limit to track making.
