2011/2012 Rule Changes

The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has agreed other changes to the F1 rules for 2011 and 2012.

Among the changes for next year is the requirement for gearboxes to last five races rather than four, With 20 races on the calendar next year that means a teams could complete a season using four gearboxes.

As announced in June, driver-adjustable rear wings will be introduced next year.

Tests for bodywork deflection – an area of much dispute in 2010 – will be revised and cockpits will be strengthened to reduce the chance of components puncturing them and injuring the driver.

The FIA has also promised changes to the rules on “driving and driver conduct”. There will be revisions to the list of penalties available to stewards including penalties for drivers who do not use both types of tyre compound during the race.

The race director will be able to close the pit lane “for safety reasons” and the width of the fast lane in the pits will be limited. The FIA will clarify when cars may overtake the safety car, following the contentious circumstances in this year’s European Grand Prix.

Shallow-groove wet weather tyres will be officially referred to as “intermediate” tyres in the rules.

For 2012 the FIA say that “team communications will be made available to broadcasters”.

Biomass will be introduced into fuel compounds and a new limit on suspension compounds will be added.

Changes to the 2012 Technical Regulations

• All engine standard ECU set up and control parameters, which were formerly contained only within a Technical Directive, are now contained within the relevant parts of the Technical Regulations.
• The exhaust tailpipes are now strictly regulated in order to ensure that the aerodynamic effect exhaust gases have on the car is kept to an absolute minimum.
• Better marking of in-car emergency switches operated by marshals are now stipulated.
• The side impact structures will now have to be subjected to a further (upward) push-off test.

Changes to the 2012 Sporting Regulations

• Cars may no longer take part in pre-season testing without having passed all crash tests.
• There will now be a maximum race time of four hours to ensure that a lengthy suspension of a race does not result in a race that could run up to eight hours if left unregulated.
• Before the safety car returns to the pits all lapped cars will be allowed to unlap themselves and then join the back of the pack, ensuring a clean re-start without slower cars impeding those racing for the leading positions.
•Cars which were in the pit lane when a race is suspended will now be allowed to re-join the cars on the grid in the position they were in when the race was suspended.
•Drivers may no longer leave the track without a justifiable reason, i.e. cutting a chicane on reconnaissance laps or 'in' laps to save time and fuel.
•Drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position.
•One three-day test will be carried out during the season, formerly there were none.
•All stewards' decisions which are not subject to appeal are now in one place instead of being in various places within the regulations.
•All tyres allocated to a driver may now be used on the first day of practice; formerly only three sets were permitted.

Lotus (Caterham) have confirmed both drivers for next year, Marussia or whatever it's called has signed Pic, HRT has signed de la Rosa.

And Lotus have found some guy called Kimi Raikkonen lying in a gutter stinking of booze and given him a drive, too.

Also, that's the endurance layout for Bahrain. They're reverting to the old one methinks.

Thank you all :)

Up to date now with all confirmed 2012 contracts. The Bahrain track map is the old version but they haven't made the classic one in that style atm.

Cheers,
Iain.

so.. up to the drivers. The first thing that comes to my mind is: Sutil is underrated. the guy did a great great job. di resta did a Very good job, but not as good. true it is his first season, still, i cant bealieve that sutil might get no drive for 20 12

Yes, Sutil put in some amazing drives in the second half of the season.

If Trulli stays in F1, it will be quite unfair - that seat really should go to Sutil or Senna if they are on the market.

Maldonado is confirmed by Williams.

Bottas also the third driver.

Looks like Sutil will be shoehorned into the second Williams.

Poor Rubens, Renault really should take him on!

Rubens has been a good driver over the years and a nice guy, but I really think his time is up, I don't know why Renault would pick him over Senna, Grosjean, Petrov, Sutil etc.

Perhaps.

Yet, for Williams.. They may as well keep him on for 2012.
