2011/2012 Rule Changes
The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has agreed other changes to the F1 rules for 2011 and 2012.

Among the changes for next year is the requirement for gearboxes to last five races rather than four, With 20 races on the calendar next year that means a teams could complete a season using four gearboxes.

As announced in June, driver-adjustable rear wings will be introduced next year.

Tests for bodywork deflection – an area of much dispute in 2010 – will be revised and cockpits will be strengthened to reduce the chance of components puncturing them and injuring the driver.

The FIA has also promised changes to the rules on “driving and driver conduct”. There will be revisions to the list of penalties available to stewards including penalties for drivers who do not use both types of tyre compound during the race.

The race director will be able to close the pit lane “for safety reasons” and the width of the fast lane in the pits will be limited. The FIA will clarify when cars may overtake the safety car, following the contentious circumstances in this year’s European Grand Prix.

Shallow-groove wet weather tyres will be officially referred to as “intermediate” tyres in the rules.

For 2012 the FIA say that “team communications will be made available to broadcasters”.

Biomass will be introduced into fuel compounds and a new limit on suspension compounds will be added.

Changes to the 2012 Technical Regulations

• All engine standard ECU set up and control parameters, which were formerly contained only within a Technical Directive, are now contained within the relevant parts of the Technical Regulations.
• The exhaust tailpipes are now strictly regulated in order to ensure that the aerodynamic effect exhaust gases have on the car is kept to an absolute minimum.
• Better marking of in-car emergency switches operated by marshals are now stipulated.
• The side impact structures will now have to be subjected to a further (upward) push-off test.

Changes to the 2012 Sporting Regulations

• Cars may no longer take part in pre-season testing without having passed all crash tests.
• There will now be a maximum race time of four hours to ensure that a lengthy suspension of a race does not result in a race that could run up to eight hours if left unregulated.
• Before the safety car returns to the pits all lapped cars will be allowed to unlap themselves and then join the back of the pack, ensuring a clean re-start without slower cars impeding those racing for the leading positions.
•Cars which were in the pit lane when a race is suspended will now be allowed to re-join the cars on the grid in the position they were in when the race was suspended.
•Drivers may no longer leave the track without a justifiable reason, i.e. cutting a chicane on reconnaissance laps or 'in' laps to save time and fuel.
•Drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position.
•One three-day test will be carried out during the season, formerly there were none.
•All stewards' decisions which are not subject to appeal are now in one place instead of being in various places within the regulations.
•All tyres allocated to a driver may now be used on the first day of practice; formerly only three sets were permitted.

What always annoyed me about Schumacher and Ferrari was that it was the perfect combination. I always wanted to see Schumacher try fight for it at another team maybe, to give us the answer of whether it was him, the car, or his obvious preferential treatment that was... Sooo

How about a rotation system? Like have a cap on how many years a driver can stay at one team...Make it 2/3 years maybe. That way we might get to see drivers like Pastor in a top car, we might see if he is good enough. At the same time however we will see a driver like Alonso driving a mid field car into strong finishes? Lewis and Alonso did it alot in 2009.

The reason why is because I wan't to see drivers given a chance. After 2008 if Jenson found himself without a drive it would have been to nobody's surprise. Next thing he knew he was WDC. What about Jean Alesi? Right team at the wrong time. Mika Salo, another example. In his brief spell at Ferrari he did well, what about after a full pre-season test and season? Oilver Panis, another example of a driver who had more talent than his results suggested IMO. At the other end of the scale we have currently Massa?

Re: The 2012 Formula One Season

Abu Dhabi was just frustrating. In the cold light of day, he'll have known Petrov did no wrong, but I think we all would have been the same in such a situation. You're so pumped up inside the car at such a crucual stage that it's natural that emotions boil over occasionally - it's which actions you take when they do which separates the great from the good, and the fact that Alonso's were only vocal rather than creaming into the side of Petrov ought to place him firmly in the former category. Many of his contemporaries would have taken at least one of them out of the race, either deliberately or through sheer desperation. We'll have all been in similar (race, never mind championship) positions in racing sims, which have far less pressure associated - how did you cope?

As for Hockenheim, Alonso is a mentally strong driver and Massa a mentally weak one. I'm not saying Ferrari were right (they certainly weren't), but Alonso had dominated Massa up until that point and continued to do so afterwards. He's clearly going to ask for Massa to be moved aside - that Ferrari management complied is the real issue, and it's a very modern Ferrari thing to do. That and the fact that Massa, the faster driver on the day, allowed himself to be caught in a comfortable position by a relatively struggling Alonso.

I'm generally very impartial in F1, but I too have found myself to be an Alonso fan. I liked the fact that he broke Schumacher's dominance, but then I guess most of us did, just for a change, and from the outset I hated the preferential treatment and support that Hamilton enjoyed at McLaren (something that seemed very much not to be the case on these forums until after Alonso had long left McLaren and 2009 had started in the farce that it did for Hamilton). But what really does it for me is his 100% every single lap. It's a Mansell-like attitude with the talent of a Raikkonen. I can't help but like a guy that never, ever gives up, and there's only been a handful of them throughout the 70 years of F1, and I genuinely don't even think any of the previous ones have been as committed as constantly as Alonso, Senna and Fangio included.

I know his Singapore victory was only made possible by Piquet's crash, but he was a joy to watch in practice and qualifying and, somewhat tainted, in the race too. His weekend up until his gearbox was truly something to behold.

I've been a pretty huge fan of him since the second half of 2008 and his awe-inspiring drives in the Renault, but off-track I've also liked him for roughly the same amount of time. I didn't like him during his Championship years with Renault and to an extent McLaren, when he came across as very moody and petulant and a complete diva at times, although as we soon knew he was more than justified in the way he reacted to events at McLaren. Looking back I think 2007 has done him more good than anything else, and he's become a much more level-headed and mature driver(and person) since that bitch of a season he had dealing with Ron Dennis. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I think Fernando is the one who's ultimately come up smelling of roses after 2007 - and deservedly so too.

But, then again, they both started their careers with Minardi. It was, in basic terms, only Alonso AND Schumacher that he developed into key winners, and as I can remember, he's the reason why Renault are supplying engines to Red Bull since 2007. But still, the guy is a stupid egotist. A lot of guys could've been stars, but either narrowly escaped or their careers died because of him. Kovalainen narrowly got through. He went to McLaren for two seasons and won a race. Ok, so he's in a Caterham now but, he's still doing very well. Unfortunetly, Trulli, Fisichella, Piquet Jr, Herbert etc, etc. All got caught and their careers died. Sure, Fisi got most of his wins at Renault, but because of Alonso, we never could see what he could do. During the late 90's, he could've shown Schumi up. Gehard Berger, Jean Alesi, Alexander Wurz etc, etc. could easily smacked Hill, Villeneuve, Schumacher and the rest around, but Briatore just sulked and cried cause Schumi went to Ferrari. He waited till Alonso came, and by that time, Berger, Alesi and Wurz were out retired or doing sport car series (ever wondered why Wurz can run consistantly when in sports cars, I think winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans or coming close, and why in F1 he couldn't).

I think it's safe to say that, thanks to the quick minded Nelson Piquet Jr, Briatore was finally brought down and the injustice of all of his politics could finally enjoy themselves.
