from Wikipedia:
The first Hungarian Grand Prix (Hungarian: Magyar Nagydíj) was held on June 21, 1936 over a 3.1-mile (5.0 km) track laid out in Népliget[1], a park in Budapest. The Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union, and Ferrari teams all sent three cars and the event drew a very large crowd. However, politics and the ensuing war meant the end of Grand Prix motor racing in the country for fifty years.
A major coup by Bernie Ecclestone, the 1986 Hungarian Grand Prix was the first Formula One race to take place behind the Iron Curtain. Held at the twisty Hungaroring near Budapest, the race has been a mainstay of the racing calendar. Run in the heat of a central European summer, it also held the distinction of being the only current Grand Prix venue that had never seen a wet race up until the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. The first Grand Prix saw 200,000 people spectating, although tickets were expensive at the time. Today, the support is still very enthusiastic, particularly from Finns.
Due to the nature of the track, narrow, twisty and often dusty because of under-use, the Hungarian Grand Prix is associated with processional races, with sometimes many cars following one another, unable to pass. Thierry Boutsen demonstrated this perfectly in 1990, keeping his slower Williams car in front of champion-elect Ayrton Senna, unable to find a way by. The secret to a winning performance at Hungaroring, as well as qualifying well, is pit strategy, best demonstrated in 1998, where Michael Schumacher's Ferrari team changed his strategy mid-race before Schumacher put in one of his finest drives to build up a winning margin after all the stops had been made. Passing is a rarity here, although the 1989 race saw a famously bullish performance from Nigel Mansell in the Ferrari, who started from 12th on the grid and passed car after car, finally taking the lead in splendid opportunist style when Ayrton Senna was baulked by a slower runner. The circuit was modified slightly in 2003 in an attempt to allow more passing.
Other notable occasions in Budapest include first Grand Prix wins for Damon Hill in 1993, Fernando Alonso (in 2003), the first Grand Prix winner from Spain, who also became the youngest ever driver to win a GP, Jenson Button in an incident-packed race in 2006, and Heikki Kovalainen in 2008. Also noteworthy is Damon Hill's stunning near win in the unfancied Arrows-Yamaha in 1997, when his car lost drive on the last lap causing him to coast in second place.
In 2001, Michael Schumacher equalled Alain Prost's then record 51 Grand Prix wins at the Hungaroring, in the drive which also secured his 4th World Title.
The 2006 Grand Prix was the first to be held here in wet conditions. It also saw Mansell's seventeen-year-old record of winning from 12th broken, as Button took his victory from 14th place on the grid.

My prediction: Alonso will try to finish with the critics to his team winning again. My podium: Alonso, Webber, Button.

Well my main hope for this weekend is that Massa puts in a very strong performance. If he has a poor performance this weekend, it could be the final nail in the head in terms of Alonso's psychological edge over him within the team.

This track has actually provided some decent races in the last few years, so hopefully we can get an interesting race.

I am pretty sure that it will be interesting as it always is in Budapest. I think that the performance of the cars won't change too much just a few days after Hockenheim. Hope for a good Ferrari performance here aswell! :)

I think that with the current regulations race can be a procession. 1 stop about lap 16-20 and that's it. There is no way anyone in front can overtake.
Ferrari arrive with in a good moment in terms of speed and this is an Alonso track, besides, they use the ultra soft tires that generally benefit ferrari, so I guess in terms of potential, they are in very good position. Red Bull will be there as always and who know about McLaren? They are capable of going very fast... but I think this is Alonso's time. Massa will have a lot of pressure/motivation, but honestly I don't think he can bet Alonso in terms of speed, although if he manages to be infront of him can be interesting...

Ferrari will go well here imo.

It's a track so RBR will go well too :p

And Mclaren say they'll be better than Germany but im not so sure. It's bumpy and they are not so great on the power as the other two.

imo it will be another RBR v's Ferrari fight.

Expect Kubica to pop a supprise and maybe bu up there with the Mclarens

I hope for rain otherwise a borefest!

I'm hoping for some team orders, or at the very least, a driver slowing down so his team mate can pass. :-)

according to brembo, you need 132kg of force on the pedal to slow the car down for the 1st corner. Anyone whos been to the gym knows how bloody heavey 132kg is. Maybe us mere mortals couldnt even press the brake pedal hard enough let alone say we would this and tht.

That's........ insane. That doesn't even take into account the significant retardation achieved by simply taking your foot of the throttle thanks to the drag provided by the wings.

132kg force on the pedal... that'd be very impressive, I'm not entirely convinced that isn't a typo.

thats what i thought but heres the vid; however on 2nd thoughts i wonder if that 132kg is referring to something else. it does seem very high for a one leg of a human.

Train your legs for a year as hard as a F1 driver does and you can do it as well. It sounds a lot, but put it into perspective. Your own weight is, say, 75kg. You can kneel down and get up on one leg (providing you don't fall over). From there it will only take some good excercise and a proper sportsman diet to get to 132kg.

So lets put this into perspective... 132Kg is the heaviest braking zone at Hungary... there are 70 laps in the race. This doesn't take into account that there other heavyish braking zones, nor practice of qualifying.

Damn! I'm only pushing 20Kg in my puny dumbbell workouts. I'd be finished less than a sixth way through braking for turn 1, and that's not even taking into account g-force.

ALAS! We have Derek Warwick as steward for this race.

Sorry... I know that was terrible but I couldn't resist. I shall now crawl away in shame.

I assume that's 20+your weight, so that would be 90-100kg or so. See how close you are to being fit enough to be an F1 driver! ;)

But yes, it's 70 times that. It's really a lot.

Lol you humour me. I guess that is 20kg plus some of my body weight depending on the exercise I'm doing. But in all honesty I didn't take my body weight into account, because holding your own weight whilst standing, sitting, walking etc is something most (able bodied) people would inevitability take for granted. I only take my weight into account during my hilarious attempts at push-ups.

I'm generically fit... and by that I mean I'm relatively fit and healthy. I exercise regularly using rowing, cycling and light weight training, my BMI is within healthy range etc., my blood pressure and heat rate is within safe parameters for my age. I'm by no means sporty or athletic though, and hence I'd imagine that I'm light years away from being entry level racing fit, let alone F1 fit.
