I remember montoya saying that the phrase standing on the brakes means just that, because of the grip from the tyres, added with down force meant that the drivers despite being strapped into the car with a 5 point harness, lifted their bottom off the seat of the car to depress the pedal so hard to get the car to slow down, literally putting the full force of your body weight on to the pedal, hence standing up
