'Toyota set to end Formula 1 project'
03 November 2009 / Results

Toyota is about to pull out of Formula 1, Japanese newspaper Mainichi reports. According to the paper, the Japanese manufacturer will host a press conference on November 8th, where the decision will be made public.

Toyota is set to have an important meeting in which the future of the Formula 1 project will be discussed, and the prospects aren't good. Toyota hasn't had that craved first victory this year, although the team has made a big step forward after last season. With the manufacturer suffering badly from the current economic crisis, the millions spent in the Formula 1 project could very well be used for other issues.

If Toyota indeed pulls out, it would be bad news for rookie Kamui Kobayashi, who made a very good impression in the two races in which he replaced the injured Timo Glock. After a sixth place in Abu Dhabi, he looked set for a drive in 2010. It could also mean good news for the former BMW team, who are looking to get a spot on the grid for next year, which they could take over from Toyota.

Well if they do go, I highly doubt that F1 will really miss them, and I know I won't. They've done nothing memorable except be the team that's had the biggest budget and done the least relatively with it.

What I'd be concerned about is the possibility of there being two less cars on the 2010 grid. Hopefully, if Toyota go, one of the other new teams who applied for an F1 slot back in the early summer will be allowed to take their place.

That's apparantly a badly translated article, and nothing's confirmed until their budget meeting next Sunday.

TF are signed to the Concorde. If they do infact leave, they can chose to sell up if they wanted, and if a buyer is found they would then take TF's place rather than Sauber... at least I think thats how it will be done.

I kinda hope this isnt true. I'd like them to stay because I am not so sure all the new teams would make it, and TF is a sure shot (providing the budget talk goes well) and you know they do at least have the ability to produce a decent car. I would rather that then watch STR, USF1, Manor and Campos battle it out for last

I rather have a committed team like ProDrive instead of Toyota and BMW.

I don't hope that Renault go, at least not yet, because they've still got a sizeable stake in F1 for next year, including at least one engine contract and a deal with Robert Kubica.

The '00s will become known in the future as "The decade of the manufacturers". :) It's an era of financial power in F1 which has come and gone, or very nearly gone. The '90s saw privateer teams thrive, and IMHO the '10s are set to see privateer teams thrive again.

Official now, bad news imo. They've had a decent year this year. I hoped Kobyashi would sway some votes to stay but... Shame for everyone at Cologne and Japan, nad also Kobyashi, i hope he finds a drive. He looked so much more impressive than any of the rookies had this season!

Nobody. They were just there to fill the grid.

I wouldn't have missed them before Brazil, but it would have been nice to see Kobayashi get a full season with them.

But anyway, Trulli will go to Lotus, Glock will go to Renault - so not a dramatic ripple effect in F1.

It will be nice to see Sauber return to the grid as well.

I think any team is missed to an extent, but in this case, Sauber will probably get a chance, which is great - and probably outweighs any disappointment.

Even so, if I had to pick teams that I wanted to leave, Toyota would probably be 3rd on my list (behind FI and STR)

Renault will also have board meeting today a possible pull out of F1 as well? maybe so...but they will still stay as an engine supplier, however bad news for the Renault team and Kubica.

Kubica would be compensated for the breach of contract, and drivers like him never go without a drive.

I say Kubica and Kobayashi for Sauber in 2010 ;)! RK and KK, that's a lot of Ks :P
