Spanish banking giant Grupo Santander announced on Thursday it will be the Ferrari team's sponsor for the next five years.

The company, currently sponsoring McLaren, said it will be Ferrari's "main" sponsor from next season.

The deal was announced in a press conference at the Monza circuit on Thursday, when Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo was joined by Bank of Santander president Emilio Botin.

So maybe a step closer to Alonso joining Ferrari?

What does this mean for Marlboro?

Races: 163 - Wins: 23 - Pole Positions: 24 - Fastest Laps: 22

I still think Marlboro (Phillip Morris) will be Ferrari's title sponsor till the end of the 2011. Montezemolo said yesterday that sponsors don't have anything to say about it who drives Ferrari, it's Luca's choice. But I'm still not sure we will see Alonso with Ferrari 2010...2011 will be more likely :)

Im pretty sure Vodaphone are paying alot more to Mclaren than Santander were. Santander will probably be replaced quite easily :)

Its interesting that the deal is with Ferrari though, because in the past Philip Morris bought the advertising for the whole car, and then sold it out. It looks like Philip Morris' sponsorship is starting to wind down.

This doesn't necessarily mean Alonso is going to Ferrari in 2010, because we are 99% sure he will be there no later than 2011, so Santander will be ready for that.

Thats good news. Either way I shouldnt think they'd struggle to find someone to fill the space!

I quite liked the Lewis/Mclaren abbey adverts. I have a feeling we wont be seeing any Ferrari adverts on British TV!

That's the only annoying thing with sponsors. Why can't they advertise things in all countries? I mean it'd be fun seeing ads with F1 drivers compared to Beckham and Fatty (Rooney)

If I'm technical, Ferrari stole Vodaphone from Jordan in the first place :p

He meant that Eddie Jordan had some form of pre-contract with Vodafone to be sponsoring them, not the then-sponsored Benetton team ;-).

PS: Bonjour Math, ça va? ;)

Yeah the deal was apparently for 2002 but Ferrari sniped it away from Joran

So Ferrari will still be Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro officially next year?
