Says Autosport.com.

Apparently the FIA are now looking for the go-ahead from existing teams to allow 28 cars. 1994-style quali, anyone?

Brilliant news, let's hope the FIA do allow them on the grid.

edit - there is one consideration. What if Renault pull out because of this mess? Maybe unlikley, and it would be a shame for 600 odd people to lose work because of just 3 people but it is something to consider.

Good stuff. I hope this means that the folks in Germany as well at Switzerland can still keep their jobs.

Good question on the qualifying, depends on whether or not the Concorde agreement still stipulates a maximum of 26 cars.

They could keep the current format, except in the bottom 9, the last 2 don't qualify at all (if they're running a maximum of 26 cars). Or it'll just go 9 out, then 9 out, then the top 10 "shootout".

Hopefully both Sauber/Qadbak and Lotus are both on the grid.

It will give us some insurance in case Renault or Toyota quit, or even in case one of the other new teams falls over.

However, it is quite disappointing not to see Epsilon Euskadi get on the grid, i think they could have done relatively well.

I for one believe Renault to be innocent and Nelson Piquet to be a moron. However, regardless of the outcome Renault may choose to leave, which would solve this whole issue.

By the way - the concorde agreement limits participation to 26 teams due to garage space. HOWEVER, the top teams currently user four garages each, whilst the lower teams use just two garages each. If the FIA wish to make space for 28 cars, it's really a very simple move of telling the top teams they are only permitted three garages instead of four. This will create ample additional space for a new team.

Getting Ferrari to agree to that proviso, however, is the sole stumbling block.

Not sure about this, the unity amongst FOTA is quite incredible at this stage. If Ferrari and McLaren are happy to agree to remove KERS for next year despite all of their investments (and success) with it, i think they would agree to this as well.

Wonderful news! Makes the driver market more crazy again - Heidfeld and Kubica may need not move at all...maybe. I'll be extra happy if Qadbak keeps the Sauber name at any rate. :)

Thing is, to echo some of what Max has been saying recently, I still got a bad feeling that one of the current teams will still pack up and leave - people mention Renault, I still worry about Toyota and Torro Rosso as well.

Heidfeld and Klien would be a fairly obvious driver choice for Qadbak-Sauber, should it go ahead, i would think. I'd say Kubica would leave and probably end up at Renault, Toyota or Williams (depending on their futures for the first two of course)

As for Lotus, its hard to say at the moment. Drivers like Pantano, Petrov, Senna, di Grassi would probably all be a chance here. They might want a Malaysian driver involved somehow, so Fairuz Fauzy could be a test driver (his results definitely don't warrant a race drive though).

We've had a possible Schumacher comeback, we've had Badoer racing again and the old school drivers like Rubens and Fisi are shining at the moment. All this talk of Malaysian involvment in F1 makes me yearn for an Alex Yoong return! ;)

This is great news, and hopefully the FIA can make that 28-car grid happen next year. It would be great timing because we have such a big driver market at the moment, with new young guys coming through and also experienced guys who shouldn't be retiring yet. A few extra seats would be welcome.

A Swiss company bought BMW, it's Lotus that is owned by a Malaysian company (Proton).
