Admittedly there is a precedent when Ralf Schumacher committed the same infraction in 2004 and 0.5 seconds was added to his qualifying time. But the rule book still does not define a punishment.

If no punishment is defined, then surely no punishment should be issued?

indeed...maybe the FIA scrutineer should be checking Hamilton's side for equal treatment too lol. After all, it's the team who decide what tyres to go on and it'd be unusual for a team not to know the regulations (although tbh, it's one I've never heard of before myself).

"If no punishment is defined, then surely no punishment should be issued?"

And the rule is only a test to see how many people in the pitlane can count to 2 , right?

Ron Dennis fully conceded his team had breached the regulations, he said the mistake only happened on a single installation lap and gave Hamilton no benefit.

"It was 100 percent the team's mistake," Dennis said. "Lewis did an installation lap on one set of wet tyres, and we just put on another set. It was 100 percent our fault.

"He only did an in-and-out lap, so there was no advantage, but it was clearly a breach of the rules. Two other people made the same mistake, and it is up to the stewards to decide on the penalty.

While we're talking about it, what's the point of an installation lap? I've never known why they do them, and I've never seen one on TV before. I was suprised to see cars when I went to the British GP going in and out of the pits so often before the race even started :S

I agree that a breach of the rules deserves a punishment.

I was speaking from a logical point of view.

If it was up to me, I'd issue fines, seeing as this is a fairly trivial issue.
