Renault confirms Red Bull deal

Renault has confirmed that it will supply engines to one of the Red Bull-owned Formula 1 teams next season.

The French manufacturer announced on Friday morning that it had signed a two-year contract with the energy-drink company.

Renault F1 boss Alain Dassas and team principal Flavio Briatore issued a joint statement saying: “It is positive for Formula 1 to have another team racing with a top-line, competitive engine, and this agreement will also reinforce Renault’s presence in the sport.

“We look forward to working with a dynamic, ambitious company such as Red Bull.”

Red Bull has not yet informed Renault whether the engine contract will be assigned to Red Bull Racing or its 'B' outfit Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Its preferred option would be for the main squad to use Renault engines with Toro Rosso taking over the Ferrari contract, which has one year left to run.

RBR sporting director Christian Horner made this case at Monza last weekend, saying a Toro Rosso-Ferrari partnership would make sense because of the Italian "synergy".

And RBR's chief designer Adrian Newey is keen to mate his first Red Bull chassis, the RB3, with a Renault engine as he believes it will offer packaging and cooling advantages.

But Ferrari is less enamoured of a plan that would see RBR switch allegiance to its arch-rival Renault while it supplies the second-string outfit.

ITV-F1.com understands that some hard bargaining is going on behind the scenes and that RBR has two parallel design programmes underway to cater for both scenarios.

If Ferrari didnt supply second rate engines to other teams then RBR would be looking for a new engine.

With the new engine rules next year Ferrari will have to supply identical engines to RBR wont they or do the rules still allow different teams to be supplied with different engines ?

The engine freeze happens at the Chinese GP. If RBR use Ferrari engines next year then the specification of engine that is in the RBR at the Chinese GP, which could be a specification lower than the Ferrari engine used in the Ferraris will be used and not the specification the works team has is my understanding of the new rules.

I wonder if either team (Renault or Ferrari) think that Red Bull is taking the piss with this? As if they don't have enough on-track rivalry anyways, now they're being forced to work together under the Red Bull blanket.

i think its quite clever, 2 of perhaps the best engines on the grid and they can juggle which of their teams gets which to SOME extent.

do you think red bull, at the end of the year, will stick Renault and Ferrari engines on a dyno or whatever and work out which provides the best performance and allocate the deals accordingly?

Red Bull are n00bs!
They knew the trouble that come with Ferrari engines and not being up to the work teams spec. Ask Sauber they got a year old engines didnt they?
Now Ferrari may force them to honor the contract. Will be interesting to see how this ends up

Yep, they were dumb to expect the same spec engines that Ferrari were running and now they want out, good luck to 'em.

This whole scenario at present could be embarassing for Red Bull. There is the potential for STR to have the best engine in the slower chassis, and the Newey designed RBR car to have a better package but slower car due to the Ferrari clunker in the back.

I don't know why Ferrari is putting up such a stink, As long as they get their dough they shouldn't care where RBR puts their crappy motor. Newey and DC will pull every string they have to get the Renault engine in the back of the RB07....

oh they will im sure!

imagine, and i know its infinitely unlikley but a funny way to go round this, if rbr decided to swap contracts with str and put dc and webber in the toro rosso, and have the renault there designed by adrian newey :P

The Engine is one of the most important parts of the goddamn car and look how late their leaving their decision. I dont expect them to do much better next season tbh.

Sauber were using almost the exact same engine as Ferrari. They were always a spec or two behind the latest that Ferrari had though. They were not using year old engines.

Often they were left with year old engines actually.

True, I think 2003 was the first season that Sauber had Ferrari engines from the same year. Previous to that it had always been last seasons engines that they were given.
