This was after the race had stopped. The rain continued to come down in torrents, and the drain located in a grassy section near the first turn couldn't handle the overflow, so essentially it formed a small pond that covered the inside section of the track at that corner.
On TV they showed the various auxiliary vehicles of the circuit driving around the course, and when they reached this section it looked as if they might drown their engines because the water was so deep.
As if that wasn't bad enough the wind was blowing extremely hard and leaves and small tree branches were littering the track in some areas. No way they could have restarted that race on Sunday....
