Front tire size is based on the car's weight distribution (and probably a lot on aero distribution as well these days). CG of modern cars is much further forward than in the 70's, so the front tires have gotten bigger to cope.
I do like the wide, low look of that Mclaren though (of course the whole car is over a foot wider than today's cars).

Agreed. F1 tires need to dissipate a lot of heat, thus they're as big as the regulations allow. Things like rolling resistance matter to bicycles, not so much to F1 cars.

F1 Not a bad race, but it seems like the late cautions are turning all this years races into complete lotteries (even more than normal). In that case I don't see much point in watching the first three hours or so of the race.

Other Motorsports I think it will be very wierd looking. But the current F1 cars are hideous anyway, so I don't really care. I'm surprised the tire manufacturers would want this though, shorter sidewalls would mean less space for them to put their logo on

F1 I don't believe it's possible The glass is transparent by using a bit of a trick - it is not part of the cockpit object, but the instruments. I think the team-specific part of the cockpit livery (forget the file name) uses the alpha for reflections, not for transparency.

Grand Prix 4 NO NO NO! This is seriously dangerous! Nascar does this and there are cars running around hundreds of laps down trying to pick up a couple of points. Many of them have damaged cars, and all they do is get in the way and cause accidents.

Never good, you can bet the asphalt will fall apart halfway through the race....

Other Motorsports 3 races probation? WOW. If nothing else he should have gotten banned for entering the pits through the wrong entrance and then driving the wrong way down the pitlane. Either of those things is a black flag in every other form of racing I know. (Then again, we know NASCAR doesn't follow "normal" rules of racing)

Other Motorsports That accident was outrageous. Fortunately the new car has a higher roof, that damage is really close to the driver.
Interestingly the FOX commentators seem to think that the rear wing is causing the cars to flip over. I find that very hard to believe, given what we've seen with sportscars over the years.
I also can't believe NASCAR allows cars to come back on track after going b

F1 The FIA need to do a better job studying the rules before they implement them. Things like these wheels and the diffusers are a predicatable development.
Also who on earth decided it was a good idea to let these airbox fins back in? They were banned in the late 90's on grounds of being ugly after the horrible McLaren of 95

That thing won't go around the Speedway at any decent speed, never mind a road course I hope they keep something like the current proportions, which are way better than modern F1.

Other Sports I wouldn't say she was awful in Indycars: 7th, 6th, 5th overall in the last 3 years. Don't forget that IRL cars don't have any power steering, and she weighs about 100 lbs. Her results in the lower open-wheel classes show she has plenty of talent as a road racer.

Not likely, cars ran full tanks through 1993. I believe the last car to catch fire due to a crash was Berger at Imola '89, in a Ferrari that stored fuel in the sidepods (now illegal)

F1 wow, I like the airbox on the Merc! A little like some of the cars of the late 80s/early 90s actually, but very cool.
Claire is Frank's daughter BTW, Peter Windsor interviewed her on TV here and made mention of it

F1 I think I like the present layout better. As a TV viewer, I don't need every corner to be an overtaking opportunity (maybe people in the stands will feel differently). If I wanted that, I'd watch NASCAR. I'd rather see the cars working through the corners at Bridge/Priory/etc than have another straight.

Off-Topic actually gp4's default wheelbase (295 cm) is way too short for the modern cars or even the 2001 cars. I've been trying some longer cars and the results are a big improvement. And I can't think of a compelling arguement against using tweaker
