I can see why he's left, what with Red Bull forming the team around Verstappen. I'm sure he would have jumped into a Mercedes or a Ferrari in a heart-beat, but obviously they are keeping a safe set of teammates (well, we'll see about Ferrari at Monza I'm sure, but it looks like Raikkonen is now favourite to stay). Good move? Probably not in the short-term, but hopefully Reby gav - F1
What Rubens did with narrow hard grooved tyres with zero downforce in 2000 should not be dampened by comparing it to the hideously efficient cars with near-maximum downforce, big fat slicks and ultra-smooth engine maps we had yesterday.by gav - F1
QuoteEC83 You didn't like the final section after it was modified in 2003? I thought that was a big improvement over the Lycee, which I thought disrupted the flow of the circuit... Nope, I know it added a rather mediocre overtaking spot (that Trulli won't especially like) but I thought the Lycee was far more challenging. The new layout was everything that was going wrong with F1 atby gav - F1
The corners are all the same. Ever tightening, it must be so frustrating to drive. Magny-Cours is at least a good track to drive (well, it was until the change they made to the final chicane), but the races were largely terrible (1999 aside). I suppose the generally slow corners might mean some overtaking onto the Mistral tomorrow, but I think it will be another tyre-preservation fest with thby gav - F1
It's @#$%&. It was @#$%& in the 80s and it will be even more @#$%& now. And it has possibly the worst pit-exit I've seen in recent history, which will be dangerous in the race if you're in the spray of another car - how they passed that I've no idea.by gav - F1
QuoteJ i m I've just had an email from NowTV for what looks like a 9 month pass for the F1 channel for £150. I haven't decided if I'll take it up. It's less than half price but I also have to consider that due to my job I can't watch all the races live anyway. That's getting the stage where it's almost palatable, but the last time I used the Now TV app for Wiby gav - F1

That was the whole reason for Toro Rosso taking Honda, wasn't it? McLaren didn't want Honda, so Red Bull stick it in their junior team in the hope that it comes good. Sainz didn't want to suffer the potentially disastrous season so he's been loaned to Renault for the year (Red Bull keeping him in case Ricciardo heads for pastures new in 2019).by gav - F1
Well they've certainly been unimpressive in testing so far, from both a reliability point of view and performance too by the looks of it, but it's early days yet. I think they're a step ahead of where they were in the couple of years before Honda. It's a gorgeous car though. Absolutely gorgeous. As expected the moment Honda left McLaren they look to have come good - ceby gav - F1
I'm interested that you're not rating McLaren Jim. I think they'll be fairly hot on the heels of Red Bull unless Red Bull have designed a peach and are taking it to Ferrari and Mercedes. I'm thinking perhaps 2-3 tenths down on Red Bull generally at the start of the season. Do you think they'll be further back? Interesting that Renault have come out today and said thby gav - F1
QuoteEricMoinet Slightly off topic, and excuse me if I'm wrong, but is it a Brabham of the 70's pictured in the Alfa-Sauber-Ferrari presentation behind the new car livery ? And if I'm correct isn't it Carlos Pace helmet we can see on board ? Well the only drivers to drive a Brabham-Alfa with the number 8 were Carlos Pace and Hans Stuck, so it must be one of them (in 1976 orby gav - F1
I think Renault will depose Force India next season, as, pace wise, they had a very strong end to the year (Hulkenberg was my driver of the race on Sunday, corner cutting aside). If they can improve reliability then Renault should be 4th or 5th best depending on where McLaren slot in.by gav - F1
Yeah the halo is a non-issue. I don't like it and haven't met anyone who does, but it's stupid not to have it. I'm rather surprised that some of the drivers are as against it as they appear (the cynic in me assumes that it's their employers that are against it, as it means significant modifications to the cooling, and the drivers are just toeing the line - in terms of pby gav - F1
Vettel caused the crash, but he had no way of knowing Raikkonen was there. It was just a racing incident. Sadly it has very likely decided the championship. It was a terribly boring race afterwards - a race that had promised so much too. QuoteVader but I wouldn't blame Jos on this one No, whoever was at fault it certainly wasn't Jos.by gav - F1
Yeah, the only complaints I had about the tyre wars was Bridgestone tailoring their tyres for Ferrari. If that could be avoided then I'd gladly welcome a return. Mind you, can you imagine the complaints from the drivers now - made excuses everywhere.by gav - F1
Quotemitadumapaga Gav, you are right that too soft tyres is not cool. What we have here though is a case where the hardest compound d is never used. That's not true. Wehrlein used it at Silverstone. He did a lap on it behind the safety car.by gav - F1
I don't think the racing would be better as such. From one perspective it's often good to have tyres too hard or the track temperature too cold, as it can mix up the order and makes it easier for drivers to make mistakes. Pirelli have an impossible job - too soft and everyone complains that the drivers are driving slowly conserving tyres - too hard and the drivers complain that therby gav - F1
Ricciardo was also moaning according to Horner, but they only chose to broadcast Vettel's. It wasn't a good race, but at least there was some overtaking and the last 2 laps were fun and tense. But yeah, it was crap overall.by gav - F1
I think they used to be an awful lot more brittle (see Coulthard's shattering into a million pieces at Silverstone). I was surprised at how squishy Hamilton's was though. Obviously these have been tested to the nth degree and do what's needed, but it struck me that at peak deceleration that it didn't look like it would do much to absorb an impact.by gav - F1
QuoteLaton Aw come on, the lead car dictates the pace. He took the corner the same slow speed every lap followed by a quick blast to heat the tyres. Don't get me wrong, Vettel was slow in reacting to it, but Hamilton did brake on the exit of the corner, scrubbing off 20kph in the process. That's a third of the speed he was carrying. It's hardly surprising the driver behind gotby gav - F1
Vettel deserved the penalty for turning into Hamilton, but I don't understand the uproar asking for his disqualification. It was at what, 20-30mph or so, and in no way was 'dangerous' as such. I could see why he was annoyed, and Hamilton has past history for his erratic speed changes behind the safety car (as Vettel has past history in crashing due to it - see 2007) - nobody woulby gav - F1
Quoterobracer I hope not, Indycar is a joke. There are really only 8 teams and literally only 3 of them have any hope of winning the championship, all years since 2003 it's Penske, Ganassi and Andretti that win and it will always stay like this unless there are big rule changes When have 3 teams ever genuinely contended for championships in F1? 2010 is the only one which comes to mind inby gav - F1
While I think a full-time return to F1 is fantasy, you have to think he would be not too far off of Palmer with enough track time. F1 has changed so much since his accident though, and I think it would be hard for him to return, irrespective of the condition of his arm, and be truly competitive with a driver such as Hulkenberg. Now we know single-seaters are a realistic possibility though, Iby gav - F1
QuoteSchueyFan As I have mentioned previously, it really is terrible that pitstops are allowed during VSC - why allow teams to get an advantage out of pitting during it as we have seen several times? It was an excellent race, not just by 2017 standards but modern standards. Great close racing helped by the varying strategy, and all the better that it involved the leading two. QuoteJ i m Some years ago at Imola, Alonso and Schumacher had two epic duels without making a single overtaking manoeuvre. That was tense (2005 more so than 2006), but this wasn't even on the same page. That was 2 of the best racers in F1 history going at it hammer and tongs lap after lap whilst being 3-4 tenths apart. I can't comment on GP4 compatibility (haven't played it for about 13 years) but I agree that the T300 is very good. What isn't good on the T300 is the pedals. Apparently Mario Andretti did it in in 1977 (some poetry there, given he's going to race one of his son's cars). In fact as well as finishing 3rd in the F1 championship in 1977 he also finished 7th in the USAC championship (the indirect predecessor to Indy Car) racing 7 events. Still Andretti wasn't the last full-time F1 driver to do a one-off Indy 500 - Teo Fabi did it in 1984,by gav - F1
WTF? When was the last time that happened? The 60s? Perhaps the odd one in the minor team since, but it's going to be rare. Good for him I guess.
