Colin McRae Rally (1) - Random hangs on XP

I've got CMR working under Windows XP under Windows 98/Me compatibility mode. Game runs well, except some random hangs at the entering to a stage.

I made minimal installation, because full install makes game hang every time at the entering to a stage.

Is there any way to get rid of those hangs?

EDIT:

I found out that the game runs perfectly with software rendering on any type of installation. What should I do to get the game work well with 3D acceleration?

This game is so old I'm surprised compatibility mode even worked, pick up Dirt (1) (or 2 if you want more arcadey), Dirt 1 you can find very cheap now, under £10. Or failing that at least Colin Mcrae Rally 2 as that works fine with XP I believe.
