I'm mostly a listener of newer rock but do listen classic rock at times too. But these are my personal top four;

1. Matt Bellamy (Muse)

2. Joe Satriani

3. Jimi Hendrix

4. Jack White (The White Stripes)

Also kudos to those who mentioned Mark Knopfler... an often overlooked guitarist

Where on earth are Joe Satriani and Steve Vai on that 100 greatest list?
Whoever compiled it must have been smoking some weird @#$%&.

Jimmy Page is overrated. I could play "Stairway To Heaven" when I was twelve. Jimmy Page didn't actually write it until he was twenty-two. I think that says quite a lot.

Have to agree on the Jimmy Page, he´s not that good really and makes a lot of mistakes. He does getting a point for creativity though.

I would love someone to explain to me why Jack White is on that list, what exactly is good about him? Kurt Cobain as well, what did he ever do that´s so great and God-like?

Ok, Jimmy Page is overrated, yes, I could play Stairway to heaven at 12 too, and hes not the cleanest player of all time, but hes got some songs that are very difficult I think (like The Song Remains the Same), and he was one of the first rockers that used another notes on the strings, (not In E), like in Bron-Yr-Aur

Richard Thompson is my current favourite, mainly because I am listening to lots of his work lately. In terms of more orthodox rock music I would give Randy Rhoads top billing.

As an aside, I really love the guitar playing by Lindsey Buckingham on Fleetwood Mac's 'Never Going Back Again'.

Of the people not mentioned here I'd like to say David Navarro, the guy from Blur, and the Pearl Jam duo.

Funny that joke about playing it (Stairway to Heaven) at 12. What have the people who say that composed when they were 22? How about composing Over the Hills and Far Away, or That's the Way?

Let's see people play the solo of Fool in the Rain.

It's a quote from a Spinal Tap-esque spoof band (Bad News) from The Comic Strip Presents...However maybe Vader still meant it. If he did, all I can say is 'Dazed and Confused, live version' ;)

Indeed, I am German :) No vokuhila here, but long hair. From your name, I guess you're from Poland? Vader's a great band, too ;)
